As to the armor, the AH-1S mod that I had when I was in (Crew Chief 80-83) had a 7/8" tub around the pilot and gunner. I want to say it was made out of Kevlar but to be honest it was 30 years ago and I just don't remember

Kurd, The Cobra was developed as a response to the 100,000 Russian tanks expected in a war with that country. (Thank God we never needed to do it!). Also seems to me that we blew up a bunch of Iraqi armor when the republican Guard was running like cowards from Kuwait. I'd say the bad guys have armor....

What type of Armour does the cobra have. How does the old anti tank missiles of the Vietnam era get guided to the targets as well as the new variants.

@mcbain434444 Idk about armor, but old styles used TOW missiles which stands for Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire guided... So optically guided via a wire.. Today they use hellfires missiles that can be guided by radar or or if ground soldiers laze the target

@RancidElf32 The AH-1 does not use the radar-guided version of the Hellfire missile because it does not have the Longbow radar unit; only the AH-64D version of the Apache does. The latest AH-1Z version of the Cobra can be fitted with the Longbow radar as a wingtip pod, but as far as I'm aware the Marine Corps has not actually purchased that configuration.

@RancidElf32 Only the seats are armored. There are additional plates that are attached to the door handles etc that provide a little bit more protection though.

TOW is still used on the AH-1W but is completely removed on the new AH-1Z. The Zulu can accomodate 16 Hellfire missles, which is the weapon of choice these days. Fire and forget. Laser guided. Can be designated from a ground laser or from another aircraft.

its a scanner for possible targets. the sensors look for thermal bodies (people or gunfire) vehicles and stuff and until a target is locked the diamond idles which is what you saw

when a guided missile is fired the diamond shows the radius of the blast for the target impact point

Never got to fly a real one, but I mastered the game "Steel Talons". It is an awsome game with excellent efects like you feel it when you are shot, jets attack you, tanks attack you, various terrain, and you can fly with another partner player who has their own Cobra!

@Wendigo127 You might be confusing that with the TOW missile, which does require the pilot to guide the missile to its target, which is attached by a wire thin as fish line. The hellfire will lock on via radar or infrared, then the gunner launches it and they can fly away or take cover, as the missile is in flight.

I think the Apache Longbow has superior avionics packages and are better anti-armor platforms, but the Super-Cobra is better for antipersonnel support. The TOW missiles suck compared to hellfire's fire and forget setup.

The Apache is an aircraft where you must get qualified front or back seat. The Cobra didn't work that way. When I was pilot in command I could choose what seat I wanted. Also, in case you didn't know, the front seater has a set of controls, we called them Batman sticks, and you can fly the bird from the front too. We called them that because they are very small and mounted on the sides of the aircraft instead of the std mount Cyclic between the legs and Collective off to the left side.

actually the cobra is faster by 25 kts. the cobra tops out at 222 while the apache only does 197, not that speed really has anything to do with their effectiveness on the battlefield anyway.
