  • deutsches öl :D

  • 9 people thought he meant petroleum:P

  • I would think that mineral oils would be a better choice for this.

  • @ThunderStrike764 oil isnt like water there is no way the stuff can short because it doesnt conduct ;)

  • Question: since I dont have oil, will piss do fine?

  • @xy274 No :).

  • @xy274 yup, just make sure its on when u put it in there

  • looks like piss

  • Sorry but that is just nasty. I would rather build a computer with a Corsair Obsidian 800D case and enjoy the few degrees higher. This just ruins every warranty out there.

  • Yeah gutes deutsches Öl =)

  • O.o

  • i don't get it... who cares about cooling my $500 Super Desktop Computer... if it broken... i just buy another one

  • oh boy i wanna see what happens when upgrade time comes...

  • hmm, i knew mineral oil could be used but not vegetable oil

  • @schmidtbag I have read not to use vegetable oil because it will become rancid after a few weeks.

  • @lukebob1

i don't think so. you can store vegetable oil in their normal containers, unrefrigerated, for weeks, even over a year and it doesn't go bad. fryers at restaurants sometimes keep their oil until it starts smoking, which can be a long while. i wouldn't worry about it. olive oil might be a different story

  • oil doesn't conduct. DUH!

  • that won't kill the system?!?!?!??????????

  • @shankman2000

The only things you can't put in it is the CD/DVD reader and the hard drive. Everything can go in it besides that, do to the oil not being conductive.

  • @Kelo60 nice i'm going to have to do that with my new computer i'm building lol

  • @Kelo60 I'm pretty sure you can put those in if you place it above the surface of the oil. If you don't put the hard drive or the CD/DVD Drive then how are you supposed to use it? Are you just going to boot to the BIOS everytime? That's what he did in the video, he left the power supply above the surface of the oil.

  • @1964mm

You don't put it in the oil. It's still hooked up to the PC. Just not submerged in the oil.

  • @shankman2000 oil don't conduct power

  • perfect for a woman

  • It would have been better to use a water-based cooling system and use oil in that rather than water. Just use a pump that can move through the viscosity of oil and hey presto.

  • we can fry potatoes and play call of duty 2 MWF?

  • this must be the most f*ckd up thing ive ever seen.... its even worse then 2girls1cup.. looks like he's really rapeing that pc with the oil.. imagine how messy it would be to take the components out

  • @orkie55

well duh... it's not supposed to be clean. all gamers care about is heat. if it gets the job done, then who cares?

  • What keeps the oil cool? Theres no fans on it so I was just wondering

  • If you used motor oil or any petroleum based oil it wouldn't decompose.

  • However if it ever came in contact, it'd go puff.

  • I wonder what will be done when the oil decomposes.

  • If your going to try this i recommend mineral oil instead. This is a cheaper method but it will eat away at the components and start to stink.

  • Wouldn't the oil screw up the components and short circuit the electronic pathways in the PC...?

This looks far too dangerous to attempt.

  • @ashthegreat

Uh no, the oil is inert and thus electricity is not able to be conducted

  • I don't think you know what inert means... :P

You should have said electrical insulator.

    Inert means unreactive.

  • Oil doesnt conduct electricity, its like saying "What are you gonna mix air and ur components togehter?"

OIL IS SAFER THEN AIR COOLING, its ALOT easier to make a arc in air, then in oil

  • Cool, but maybe continuous work can heat the oil afterall?

  • would be kool if the cpu could heat the 30 liters of oil , then i could make chips while using the pc

  • @thejuc

Only with a intel prescott cpu. them bitches get hot.

  • can I use kitchen oil? or cars oil?

  • either, kitchen oil is cheaper, and since u will use alot of it, ur better of with it

  • the fans will fail

  • Ok... how can OIL cool a pc?

  • eisely oild doesnt conduct electricity and CPU can't heatall the 30 liters of oil.

  • Haha. Wish you do this with water one day :). Anyways, I <3 Tom's Hardware :).

  • so what are the results

  • there are a couple of things that should have been changed. if i were you, i would have used mineral water...its clear and it also doesn't conduct electricity. also, you should have put a couple of fans in the case. you need to circulate the oil around the case for the best cooling. you also could have put the PSU in the oil, it would look a lot better. Just add a bubbler and some fake plants and you're set to go lol.

  • looool, mineral water conduct electricity BETTER then normal tap water. The minerals (ions) in the water is what makes the electron flow possible. 100% water, which i bet you've never seen actually tastes nothing like "water" at all, i drank some. But then again, battery water is in my understanding also non electric conducting. I dont know if it's 100% or 99,999% water or just deionized. Nonetheless, try using battery water and avoid getting any kind of shit in it. And the fans you spoke of is+

  • Do you need to change the oil?

  • only about once a year

  • After 10,000 miles, or if it starts to knock.

  • Why is the the PSU not submerged? I take it 110V is enough voltage to turn make the oil conduct?

  • Probably because there's no point in wasting oil by cooling it. It's not like you can overclock a psu

  • oil doesn't conduct

  • would be fun to change the gpu or some memory

  • what a mess...........

  • ...do you acsualy think this is better than the regular ventilators ant such :/ it just looks weird... and not effective :/ unles u dont have any other cooling systems it will just heat up and on a hot day... just a waste of hardware :/ but fun to experiment :)

  • Maybe you'll need something a lot more powerful than CPU in order to heat 30 liters of oil?!

  • I see your point but you never know what would happen :/

  • that looks neat

  • Good idea, but the oil would get very hot, and therefore, useless. But if it got cooled down somehow, this could actually work!

  • Yeah, just get a solid pump and a nice radiator (outside the case with some silent fans :P)and it should be just fine. Minor downside is that your case will weight over 60 kilo's though =/ Also I'm not 100% sure if watercooling radiators will work due to the density of oil. Anyone knows something about that?

  • just stick some fish tank supplies in there lol

  • This is one way to fry chips :)

  • Duh, no.

    Oil doesn't conduct electricity.

  • Now thats original.

  • i dont understand how this just doesent fuck up all the ports

  • Must smell like shit

  • You need mineral Oil. Its clear and works the same.

  • mineral oil is less conductive so its better

  • It is just stupid idea.

It can leak anywhere and hardware is Useless after this and you can only throw it away after this.

  • It won't leak if you do it proper.

  • There is nothing to ensure me that it wouldn`t leak after a while..

How does that material that is sealing a box will hold on?

Also, how to recycle that box after that?

It is hardly that anyone sane will put its new computer components inside some oil.

As I see, people are putting old computers in oil, just to show-off..

  • Also, no, the hardware is not useless at all.

    You can still use it.

  • Don`t put your coumouters in Oil.

it is just stupid idea from any angle but from experimenting point of view.

  • Now run Crysis and make some french fries. :D

  • @TrueScrewball jajja very funny :D

  • @TrueScrewball HAHAHHA

  • ahahahahaha

  • then you take out the motherboard, making a huge mess, and swap out the cards.

  • cool!

if the would cover up the power supply it would explode!

  • If you had a pump and a radiator the oil would be cooler and you could overclock you're system very well.

  • where we can buy mineral oil? what its usage for daily purpose anyway

  • you can get it at a pharmacy. it is used for intestinal lubracant

  • wow.. i wonder how must it'll cost. is it something like baby oil?

  • nope, just go to a clerk and ask for mineral oil.

  • vegetable Oil will rot after a while and will smell bad. Try mineral oil.

  • is the music from unreal 1?

  • This is not a good idea because the oil eventually evaporates gets hot turns dirty and ETC. This idea does also keep the temperature stable =]

  • Uh, the oil will not evaporate. Where the hell did you get that idea?

  • Hmm odd I was told by someone after awhile it tends to disappear from some sort of reaction anyways. IF this is the case I would try this way =]

  • hmmm I can fried my chicken there ;P

  • lool XD

  • Your just discovered KFC's secrete recipe.

  • Is this for real or is it a joke?.

  • its real

  • Oil gets hard and becomes grease, anyone who owns a restaurant knows this, in a month all this guy is gonna have left is a case full of hard grease, this is so stupid, look at that chipset fan! please don't do this to your pc.

  • no it doesent...i have done this do my server and it runs since 13okt.2007 without any stop or problem. You need to filter out the partciles or use synthetic oil.

  • It's not being heated anywhere near the temperatures of a fat fryer, nor is it in contact with all the sugars and carbs in food. That's when it condenses and turns to sludge.

Also, you have to OWN a restaurant to know this??

  • Only do this with silicone oil. Other oils (especially oils from plants) attack the plastic or react with air under heat. FYI HDDs have small slots with air filters and water absorbers. The oil will get into your drives and youre pretty much f*... So don't put them in oil too.

  • how are the fans still spinning in the oil??? oil is much denser than water...

  • Actually, oil is thicker than water, but water is more dense. It is for this reason that oil floats on the surface of water rather than water on the surface of oil. Just to clarify.

  • yuck!...the oil's filled with dirt and crap, they should've used mineral oil.

  • nice, but is so crazy to do it

  • ужас

  • anybody want some fries

  • i wander for how long will this hardware keep to work.

IMO, if you want to destroy your gear really fast, use OIL :)

is there any article about this?

  • How its still working?

  • elektrcitie dont flow true oil, unlike water..

  • This solution is practical, only thing it lacks is cover for the top, cause oil smells, and mineral oil instead of cooking oil, cause the latter rots and reeks.

Mineral oil is also less dense and allows for use of a pump-radiator system.

Aw, and one last thing, you gotta put some bubbles in that tank!

  • wow, pretty innovative

  • oil is not missive with water, as alcohol is

and also is a very bad electricity conductor

    making it a good'n'cheap choice

a good point is also the high specific heat and

    the the pH 7

  • He's using 30L of vegetable oil. Would use transformer oil instead.

  • not mineral water MINERAL OIL....

  • not alcohol, mineral water.

  • somebody should try to make one with cheep alcohol, it would be more practical and you would be able to use fans inside the case so that the liquid would be able to circulate making the heating time of the liquid slower

  • hey num nuts do you like having a bomb in your room to run alcohol through that its a ticking timebomb man.

  • I'd like to see him run hard drives in that....

  • no problems, the hard drive is manufactured in a clean room with no air, nothing can get in, nothing can get out.

  • Wrong, there's a pressure hole.

  • there were no pressure holes on the hard drive i used when i did this experement at school, i submerged the drive and it ran fine, the newer hard drives like i have in my server system have them tho.

  • Is all this oil really needed? Can you use less??

  • hown the ???? oil doesnt conduct wtf??????

  • Wow he could have taken a colorless oil. Looks like somebody pissed in his case.

Can you imagine what a mess it would give if the case would break.

  • imposible...

  • can i ask why isn't the motherboard flaming up.

  • oil is as conductive as water,

  • it shows its not lol

  • lol I ment isNT as conductive as water

  • Eigentlich ne gute Idee, aber bitte doch kein PFLANZENÖL. Sieht ja aus, als hätte da jemand reingepinkelt!! :(

  • mcnation that ideea isn't that bad.. a mini fridge costs less that a wather cooling sistem...

  • i wonder if i can super-overclock by flooding my pc with beer :\

  • what a waste that would be

  • K, first of all I am surprised the oil is non-conductive, second, these guys have waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on their hands. Any decent 'solutions' have to be everyday practical. Was a great vid never the less, quite the laugh, heh. >:-]

  • (macnation):If you put your computer in a fridge there will be condensation on the electronic parts and when you start up the system would fry! oil works nicely because oil doesn't conduct electricity.

  • i would worry about umidity... i can't really tell how hygroscopic that oil is... but water from air can get into the oil and cause short cuts... so if you can make sure you close that case, ok?

  • "Short cuts," eh?

Like the electricity is going through somebody's back yard? I guess that's what happens when there's "umidity" in your oil.

  • Why not just by a mini fridge and put your computer in there?

  • wack man why would i want a 30 pounds of a pc that is stupid , imagine if someone drops the pc , hell no i kill my self

but wait i have a mac so i don;t have to worry about it

  • I wonder how much tat puppy weights. :)
