metallica never sold out..they plashed thrash in Garage and Kill em all because Dave mustane was in the band, they quit that genre because he formed Megadeath in revenge to try to over throw metallica, thats when Kirk came in and thats when they started ride the lightning, they wanted to continue Thrash but they drifted away cause they werent as influenced to be thrash cause they have dave, he wrote most of the songs in kill em all like - Four horseman etc, so they played thrash for the songs.
