There is some confusion here over why the LM ascent stage was short fuelled.

This stage was designed to take off from the moons surface so it had to lift against one sixth earth gravity.

On the 10 mission it was tested in Lunar orbit and separated up to 90 miles from the command module. To close the gap again it simply did not need the fuel and the weight saving meant that other phases of the mission had extra margins to work in.

Remember this was still untried territory back then.

Funny story: since Apollo 10 was going to come as close as man had ever come to the Moon (8 miles from the Lunar surface), NASA made sure the LM was short fueled, so that if the astronauts became tempted to make a manned Lunar landing, they wouldn't be able to leave!

@BarackSays This story is fun but not quite accurate. That LM was too heavy to get off the Moon. The short fuel was the only way to balance the weight to the expected landing configuration.

Apollo 10 was the fourth manned mission in the Apollo programme. The mission included the second crew to orbit the Moon, and the test of the lunar module in lunar orbit. The module came to within 15.6 km of the lunar surface during practice manoeuvers.

according to the research ,the materials used in the design of the spacecraft are sufficient to block Enough harmful radiation to make it safe . The astronauts all wore dosimeters that were checked periodically during missions . And no it was not lead . Some poly type materials block the radiation sufficiently enough . Sure its not lead , but it was enough except in the case of solar flares which they were always watching for and had some lead time to adjust for.

The Van Allen Belts are not completely encompassing the earth, they are thicker in places than others. They just had to travel through the thinnest layer.

the only reason why apollo 10 could not land was that the ascent stage was intentionally short fueled. NASA feared that the crew would attempt a landing if they had the opportunity.

I don't know if that's true, but I do know the LM used on Apollo was too heavy - the ascent stage would not have been able to lift them back into orbit.

LM-5 ("Eagle") was the first LM capable of landing on the Moon and returning to orbit, after massive efforts by Grumman to lose weight.

that may be so. I got the short fueled info from the documentary "in the shadow of the moon" where Gene Cernan himself states that the fuel tanks on the ascent stage was short fueled to make sure that the crew did not attempt a landing

@josephdupont The resumption of communcations following the ionization blackout of re-entry was delayed on Gemini 6 - that is what you are referring to. Everything in Apollo 10 outside of a misplaced switch setting at LM staging and issues with LM-CSM tunnel pressure was absolutely textbook.

As i said on a couple of Moon landing video. The Landing on the moon is like god. I dont beleive in god but i do beleive it do good things to people sometime. Lunar landing i beleive it happen and strongly but i beleive too that it was a good thing for mankind.
