They did have witnesses, 5 of them in case you didn't know. In the early part of the 20th century anyone who claimed to fly would be laughed at especially since flying was a novelty. Remember just before the 1903 flights Langley failed when his Aerodrome crashed into the Potomac river, so claims of flight were taken with humor. Understanding the principals involved to fly are what separate the Wrights from all of the rest.
