it's just down to the way the chassis is constructed in the r8, seperate front/body/rear. the body panels are just for the shape of car and are not part of the structure. they would have needed to add a metal plate (covering the whole front bottom and attached to the suspension frame, not to the body panels) or a rail under the car. then it would have worked.
