DapperJas, I believe these are actually low bypass turbofans not turbojets on this 8 although it would be nice to hear a pure turbojet airliner again. I used to provide ground support for these beautiful aircraft.
Affirm, have five now. AXA, AXB, AXC, AXE, AXD and AXE. Still flying for UK MOD. Textile flights now and then, did charters for Haiti and a sporadic charter. AXB is still in Peru. One other B-check at Manston.
Thx all! Huge DC8 fan here. No, I odn't work for the company. AXA and AXB are both in service now. No DC-8's are based in England now. I guess UK's last remaining DC8's are African International and these ones, maybe rarely the one private DC8 seen in Europe now and then. Main operators now are in Brazil like Convair said and ofcaurse Africa (HBA and transair cargo (congo)). In the Middle-East some 6 DC-8's are still flying, mainly from Johnson's air. And then there's US with 73's and some 63's!
im an aircraft handler at RAF base in england. and this aircraft comes in and out all most every day.well this one is AXA which is currenly in peru having its major survicing. we get AXB at the moment.Having this taxi right up to your feet before you put chocks in is quite an awesome feeling. Also standing directly between engines 2 and 3 waiting for them to shut down before putting mainwheel chocks in.Again, wat a feeling.. them engines whitlsing and roaring abuot 1o feet away! i love my job.
Don't worry I know all about them. It's sad indeed. I know the guy who did the last engine run with 9G-BAN and a maintenance guy that works in sweden who worden on the ex-Silk Way DC8 (his brother :p). Ostend should have started a museum! We would have a DC-3, 707, IL76 and 2 DC8's by now :p
Indeed, thats the problem with classics in alot of cases :-( Some f*ckface running the company... (with TT-DAE in mind) I try to just look at the aircraft itself, though it's not really 'morally' correct ... But hey what can I do about it?
This is the most beautiful video of a -63 series Eight on the internet. Well done!! I have never before seen a -63 rotate so quickly and climb out that steeply. This was amazing - I can't wait to see more like this.
Indeed, though when taxxing by at idle power it's not so loud, just a very very beautifull sound I will never forget. Love it! I am so greatfull someone had the idea to rate those engines Stage III otherwise they would have dissapeared with the 707/IL76 in 2001 aswell :'( Too bad I didn't have my camera back then :(( (btw i think the engine is JT3D-7B)

That's right, Can't say what the last turbo-jet powered civil plane was. Prolly early 707 or CV880.

@MKA742 737-100 I'd say.

@patriot0048 Yes I remember the Delta DC-8s with the prominent word "FanJet" on the tail.

Can anyone tell me why the DC8 lands, and takes of straight away? It doesn't stop for refueling, or something like that..
There are also 2 DC8's parked at Ostend airport, they are in a bad condition, does anyone have an idea what's going to happen to them?

Hey do you have an idea of how many Dc-8 still operating in England?
Here in Brazil we have about 6 aircraft fully operational and about 5 abandoned.
We have 3 Dc-8, one 62 and two 63 from Skymaster and 3 Dc-8-73F from Beta Cargo, wich have the most beautiful Dc-8 from here.
And it is my dream, someday, fly in those Cargo Dc-8, because i am fan of this aircraft!

im afraid i dont know how many. ive only ever seen the 2 aircraft. i do not know of any others.

Are those Rolls Royce Conways ?? They dont look like the JT3Ds, and the back ends of the powerplants differ from the JT3C turbojets.
DapperJas 3 years ago
I don't know of any DC-8 with conways. De finately the JT3D. Check out my 'wonderfull dc8' series for a closer look ;)

Thanks for the kind words! Check out my window spotting video, has a great climbout!! Expect more video's from the tarmac soon!
Actually when it's on idle it's not that loud(just amazingly nice), but once that EPR starts rising all hell breaks loose :-D I love the JT3D!!!

I don't know why ACE stops in Ostend on the Basrah runs. Maybe Diplomatic clearances or something like that.
The two 'stored' DC-8's are waiting to be scrapped when they have accumulated enough fees.
