I heard him sing this live and I was part of an 8000 strong choir (at the MEN Arena in Manchester) who sang the chorus backing bit, I think it might have been 2006 possibly I can't quite remember which year ... :)))
I think he is a beautiful young man, and has the most incredible voice, he is gorgeous, and the passion he has for his music amazes me. I am very proud now to say that I have had the chance to meet this boy, and with great pleasure, I can say, i love him! (:<33

I saw someone else did this song and was interested as the Mike and The Mechanics version just sounds too 80s to listen to today. However this kid sucks. Sounds like he sucks helium before he plays.
Total dissappointment. Maybe when he goes thru puberty his voice won't sound so squeaky...
it reminds me of my dead grandpa so i hear this song every day and more than 5 times in everyday !
and last month i climbed a small mountain and noone was with me i sat at the top and looked at the view and heard this song (every one was below the mountain i climbed it Alone and no one knew it they thought that i lost ^_^ )
@kokym8 it takes a person of great knowlege to write a comment like that my freaid you have earned my respect may the world bring you happyness and my apoligies for the loss of youre relation its so nice to know the declan is so loved as i would never doubt it anyway reading that took my to a time of a simalar past of witch i expirenced it spoke to me ;)
If you've read all the comments up from the beginning, Now go to Ryder276 Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years. For the rest of the story. (in my favorites) ...P.S. Hit "Reply" to see any buried comments.
But I'll put it all away now and look again several other times. And sing it out in the street at night as much as I can in Soho, where the sound will echo. All before I perform it. ...So really, my final decision comes as I step up to the mike. Hear how things are working for the sound that very night. And how things go along in the performance. Right as the line comes up I'll decide. The first time I ever sing it. It's quite exciting.!
Of course now, I may be able to get around all this, leaving the words alone, but simply putting all the emphasis on the word "Yield" instead of "Fortunes," for this line. ...Things take time and effort to get right some-times.. hmmmmm.
...put yourself in the mind of the audience who hears it for the First time, If you are intent upon clarity. ...Upon studying even more I notice that on the Declan recording there is a background note coming from some instruement which is a bit too strong. On the very some note Declan sings these words. So now I think that this is the real culprit. The biggest factor in the clarity problem I had the first times I listened. That background note is "schmeering" things, perception-wise.
But then now I don't see this effect on the mac-book pro. Different speakers completely than with the i-mac set-up on the other shelf. Totally different bass-treble-mid-range balance.
...So much tedious work I do. So many times I say "maybe I'm not right," and go back. I carry the lit-lamp in the day-time. Looking for the honest man. The one who DOES NOT Say: "There goes a fool." ...But the one who says: "There, He must be doing that for a REason.!"
Ok, after all that bragging I want to show you how rational and hard-working I am. Do you see that video at the top of my favorites now.? The original Mike Rutherford singing it.? Well, seeing it for the first time now I see it's much clearer on that line than any other Rutherford performance they have here on You-Tube. Or this Declan one. And when you look at these things you have to think of how it was the first time you heard it. You have to try to put yourself...:
My most notable accomplishment with that was 2yrs ago at the out-door Bandshell in Central Park. A large rock ensemble was on-stage and I was about 120 ft away in the crowd. During a big, long number I noticed one of the young guitarists having trouble with his part. So I sung-in the appropriate notes to feed him. He looked around in a startled way, couldn't figure out what was happening, and began to play twice as good. He gazed wide-eyed at his guitar as though it were playing itself.
Ok, that sounds like a lot of b.s., but I chose it first because I have a reliable witness for that one. A college-aged music person of internet name "Dark-X". I had just met him there with some of his friends and we all talked before the show began. When the particular piece came up, he was standing next to me and I told him to watch the guitarist. He saw the whole thing. Later I explained how I did it.
Only when I'm doing this I "see" sound-wave connections in the air. It's similar to the highly directional hearing a bat has. I've read a little bit about it; that it exists in some other people, too. Declan, I'm sure, is one of them. Although I guess I could show him, make him more aware of certain things about it.
One of the biggest is that I can sing supporting notes into the band from the crowd or even further away and get people doing better on contact. And often I can hide it so they don't even know. My pitch is dead on and I know the chordal and harmonic structure of music quite well. So I always hear what tone or note is the weakest over-all, and seek to support that. Kind of "experiential teaching."
This is lovely. So many families are estranged and only come together for a funeral, and are drowning in regrets. Every wound can be healed, just touch and hug each other and really mean it! Everything will turn out better, then the closeness that once was, can be again.

When I sing this I'm going to make one change. Whnere it goes "So don't yield to the fortunes..." the word "yield" gets swallowed because of it's place in the measure. I would change this line to "Don't yield to the fortunes..." and give extra emphasis (and time) to the word "yield." This would have the meaning of the whole stanza come out much clearer.
After all, the people I sing to have never heard it. Really. Been a regular at that bar for five years and havn't heard it once. ANd CLarity IS my SPECIALTY.... SOOOOO,, I'll JUst ..TRY It.
After ALL, I'm The master at making Things Flow. Are'nt I.?
Well, yes, I get like that when something nice happens to me.
Well, it's Kenny's Castaways in NYC. Bleecker St. They have a live-band karaoke on Sunday night. An open mike Monday.
A while back my friends told me to grow my hair long and go into rock-and-roll. I'd sung before that but never believed so seriously as they do. So Three years ago I ramped up my effort. But I also love the romantic songs. Found Declan May 2008, looking to nail down "Danny Boy. "
Now they call me "a contender." Say I'm thirty times better. But hey, I'm older guy, different problems, and just enthusiastically focus on the next song or two. Sometimes it's really about "can an old man stand up one more time.!?" Ha.! ...The M-C Sunday night at times announces me "One of the Karaoke Stars." That's a big rush, though I'm one of a whole bunch there. ...But I do hold some serious aces in corners of the musical-talent dept.
And even worse, more shocking, I'll change the opening word "It," two lines further down, to "You." That would more clearly, more emphatically "carry a meaning through." ( It may have a new perspective.. )

And yes, there have been a couple dozen "magic moments"
with the music for me in the last few years. Jut as strange and un-believable in their own way.

David, sorry...I disagree, the song is just fine as it is. Don't change it, it would lose something and wouldn't 'flow' like it does now.
