  • How much fuel did you use/.

  • Awesome. I tried the beer can stove using two can bottoms and it sucked. I'll try this. I'm built like a tuna can as well.

  • Feed it the cat.

  • check mine out made from dog food can

  • At my store, fancy feast cost twice the price of generic HUMAN potted meat. Go figure.

  • That's the easiest to do and the more efficient stove i've found so far.

    Thank you.

  • nice design. thx for the vid! been toying around with these. I tried a tuna can and used a drill to make only ONE row of 16x 3/16 holes. Holes were just a weee bit higher than 1/2 way.(left room so it could hold more fuel) Using my Canadian Tire special Anodized Camping Cookset's large saucepan, 2 cups of water boiled in just under 6 mins using like 1 ounce of dollar store fondu fuel. (Canada's version of Denatured alcohol) Lookfor BioFlame at cantire/walmart if in canada!

  • @thefeet ran outta chars LOL. anyway, was trying to say, if you live in Canada and go to a hardware store they'll look at you like you have 3 heads if you ask for denatured alcohol. Look instead for FONDU FUEL, BioFlame Ethanol(non-pressurized alcohol based fireplace fuel) sold at Can.Tire or Walmart up here. Home Hardware sells 'Marine Blue' (prolly the best blend). In a pinch good old Methyl Hydrate will work too. Be careful Wood Alcohol is BAD if absorbed in skin. Methyl Hydrate=Methanol

  • Dude, I just made this stove in about 10 min, literally... 45 cent 3 ounce tall cat can,99 cent hole puncher and 1 ounce of a 1.88 Heet fluid bottle(the yellow one)... used a little over 1 oz of Heet... it burned for over 12 min and boiled my 2 cups of water in 5. Cost me around $3.50. Nice for emergencies, too. Thank you, sir.

  • I got 28 holes on a Tuna Can.

  • @scarlettobeara you can use the can as many times as you want. Pour enough to fullvit about 3\4 of the way up

  • Thanks for the lesson; two questions...after you've use the stove, can you re-use it the next day or do you make another one? second question how much alcohol do you pour in and how long does it last? Thanks.

  • HI, nice video. I have made a cat stove very close to yours. I don't seem to get as good of burn times from it as some other stove (even the pop can stove) I have made. This has inspired me to go back and make a few more cat stoves. Do you have a boil and burn time with a measured amount of fuel? Thanks.

  • Who cares if he waste the cat food? Of course you have some peta idiots who will say a cat somewhere is starving while he threw away 20 cents worth of ground meat. On the other hand he's creating a tool out of the can that will be used to heat his food on his travels across the world; and all you can think about is why he wasted a lump of random meat? Shut the fuck up.

  • #UN#, Thx for having such an amazing channel !! Plz Subscribe, Like, Comment, and make Favorite to my new vlog! I'm sure you'll love it too! You are the best! <3

  • great stove

  • I really like this stove. I built one, but it the flame doesnt shoot out of the ports. The flame kinda stutters around in the can then goes out. Is it possible my holes are too big? I'm gonna rebuild with smaller holes and see what happens.

  • Areal survivalist when he is done eating he will put his finger in his mouth make the food come back up then eat it as oatmeal the next morning

  • You don't waste the cat food a real survivalists will eat it.

  • Brilliant!

  • How much alcohol is required to say.... boil water? And can you put all you need in when you start, because it seems it would be difficult to add during the process?

  • There's a book that covers cat recipes in depth on Amazon -

Anna Maria Falamagetti Presents The Cat Lover's Cookbook And Tips for Better Living.

  • what are you using for fuel. I made two stoves as per your instructions and they both flare out way to much with big flames and throw black soot all over everything. I tired it with mineral spirits, and with isopropal rubbing alcohol.

  • @alanvalentinus

If you are in the UK use Methylated Spirits. In the USA most people seem to use a product called HEET (fuel line anti freeze) available in most auto stores

  • Great idea I will make one from a tuna can. I made a stove from a stew can with a Sterno can inside. Denatured alcohal is easily found and clean burning.

  • thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!! this is the first alcohol stove that actually worked for me!!! also, mine boiled water(a roiling boil) in about 2.5 minuits (i think thats how you spell it.). only thing i need to do to my cup is dip the handle in PlastiDip. otherwise the handle heats up and might burn someone who doesnt know that the flame is almost clear. great vid!!!! and thanks again!!

  • Made your stove - very nice thanks!

  • what kind of alchol does it use or does it really matter?

  • @KYBDabest123

denatured alcohol (ethanol + poisonous methanol to make it undrinkable) cheap; good fuel

  • Did you use this on the AK-YT 4700?

  • i made one of these but does this specifically have to be a cat food tin or can it be a tuna tin

  • What are the dimensions of the can? I guess I could just go to the grocery store with my tape measure, though, and not have to bother you, Andrew! LOL Great video and easy-to-follow instructions.

  • thats so cool! I'm pay my utility bill extra late this month, just so that i can cook with my new stove haha

  • Great stove!

    works well.

the only problem i have with it is that my food tastes like the alcohol (heet) that I'm using.

    Any Suggestions?

  • i cut the tuna can so it was slightly lower than the holes in the cat can

  • ive put my stove into the middle of a tuna can and then kept it in place by pushing in some fibreglass insulation. to light the stove now i put in the alcohol and at the same time put a little into the fibreglass and light the fibreglass, this means i dont have to wait for the stove to prime, the pot can be put on right away and by just using the tuna can it can be used for slower cooking and simmering

  • I've just made one of these. It works ridiculously well. Thanks mate!

  • these are great stoves. ive tried tatonka....svea.....trangia and coke can stoves and none are as quick or efficient as these........great video thanks

  • You could use "Human Feast" human flesh cans. Family Soilent stores sell it here in MN.

  • I think a tuna can might work too.

  • But it is impossible--at least here--to find an aluminum tuna can that diameter. So if by "work" you mean being punchable with a paper punch and lightweight--no, it wouldn't work. But it would work in the sense of it would be round and would hold fire. We are hoping for more, though.

  • Where can I buy denatured alcohol?

  • @jntroisi Home Depot, Lowes, and maybe even WalMart

  • Thank you, thank you for this awesome video, I just got done making mine and it works amazingly, lol! You just saved me from spending a pretty penny on a stove. Thanks again!

  • why would you waste the cat food

  • You don't. You feed it to your dog, the neighbor's cat, or the local raccoon.

  • i enjoyed your video but am a bit insulted by the fact that you think you are above me because i eat catfood and you do not

  • ha ha lmao

  • @askurka lol thats what i am gonna do...gonna spoil my cat with a can of fancy feast cat food :)

  • @askurka local racoon LOL that made me laugh.

  • @askurka DO NOT feed your dog cat food!

  • .....or buy an actual human food can of tuna n eat it yourself n use the can, I'm gonna use one of those smaller coffee cans though.

  • @AMpufnstuf

Feed it to the cat or your favorite old person on Social Security

  • @AMpufnstuf eat it yourself...or a hobo

  • I like the "minimalist" idea. Some disposable aluminum pans in the grocery store are made from heavy guage foil, and can be cut for windscreen. Some stoves sit on ground and other designs hang from a chain. The beauty is being able to fashion custom made but lightweight gear.

  • Checked out and bookmarked your site Andrew. A lot of wonderful pearls and gifts in there. Thanks again! Milad

  • Hello Andrew,

Terrific Job! I have two questions: Have you experimented with putting insulation inside the can to prevent the evaporation of the fuel? Do you think a small stand(maybe a 1/2 inch from the top of the stove) could improve the distribution of the flame on larger pots? Great job with the video by the way. Take care.

  • good point

  • the tea lite stove i cheeper and eser to make

  • Cheaper, maybe, but I doubt many (or any) are turned off by the $.39 expense of this stove. Re the tea lite: it's more fragile; it can't hold as much fuel (and therefore can't boil as much water); it's less stable; and it also needs a separate pot stand.

  • i have found armour makes a potted meat in the same size can and you get to eat whats in the can( or put the cat food lable on the potted meat and really mess with your friends when you eat the contents!) Vienne sausage cans are taller but work well too.

  • I've forwarded this video to a No Impact Experiment Trial organizer. I'm participating in the experiment which is part of the No Impact Man movie release. I want ultralight backpacking to be an integral part of this environmental movement.

  • I love making these but i use tuna cans and larger holes. the only downside is it is dificult to ballance say a pot or water on top. I know my spelling sucks. I did how ever cook some instant noodles on top or one. I was using turps. Any tips on how to not have them rust? oh yeah they are annoying to re-fuel if the run out. 5 Stars!

  • rust or soot? soot is the black stuff, it yes, you have to use foil to protect it. and i you cook instant noodles, say goodbye to you cup

  • I just made one and was able to boil two cups of water in under six minutes at about just under 5,000 feet

  • Are you the A. Skurka who hiked the huge 6875 mile trail?

  • That's some other crazy guy who has the same unique name.

  • point taken. In fairness my question was sarcastic as well.

  • @askurka hahaha

  • I just made one using your instructions and it works beyond my wildest expectations! Using a quarter inch of heet, it rolling boiled one cup of water in 3 and half min. Total burn time with prime was 6 min. I then filled it up to just below the holes with heet and put on 2 cups of water in an 8 cup coffee pot. It brought it to a rolling boil in 9 min and burned a total of 16 min including 2 min to prime it at the start. Will test outdoors with a must have wind screen.

  • How long of a burn/cook time do you get with 1 oz of fuel?

  • alright thanks ill trie but my parenst hate this stuff but what about windshield wiper cleaner ( the blue stuff in a bottle from gas stattion) would that work

  • There are lots of flammable fuels that could ineffectively be used with these stoves, e.g. gasoline or windshield cleaner. For info on the fuels that work best, search Google for "alcohol stove fuel" and read the page from Sleepless Serf," which is the third link.

  • yeah i knwo what ya mean but its the only thing i have im only 12 but it works for me its hard to get going somtimes but it does the job

  • Alex - Ask a parent to take you to a hardware store, like Home Depot or Lowes. In the paint dept you will be able to buy a quart-sized container of Denatured Alcohol, sometimes also known as "Marine Stove Fuel." It will cost probably $4, and this will be a much better fuel than rubbing alcohol.

Alternatively, you can get HEET at a local gas station. It comes in a yellow bottle and is used to de-ice gas lines in cold weather. This will cost just a few bucks too; performance is just as good.

  • i made one today worked good but i made it out of a tuna can and it didnt work but i was using rubbing alchohol and when i put the pan on it would burn out but i put slits on the top then it worked any suggestions

  • Do NOT use rubbing alcohol. Use denatured alcohol, which is far more flammable. Rubbing alcohol is sooty and has a high water content = bad fuel.

  • I'm running 99% rubbing alcohol and i don't have any water problems. Should I change to Heet?

  • I found that rubbing alcohol leaves alot of soot. I've tried denatured alcohol (also sold as shellac remover) and it burns so cleanly you barely see the flame in the bright sun. No soot at all. Heard you should only get Heet in the yellow bottle. Also, everclear from the liquor store is supposed to work well, too.

  • what kind of alchohole did u use i didnt understand please respond and great video

  • Denatured alcohol, available in the paint dept of any decent hardware store. also can use HEET, a anti-freeze for automobile gas lines (for use in the winter, yellow bottle).

  • Nice job. I made my own a couple of years ago for casual backpacking, and I'm still using it. This is very similar to the way I figured out without having any instructions. It really does work!

  • Is this what you use for your long journeys?

  • Yes, except for winter trips when I need something with more fire power in order to melt snow. My last trip was 7 months and 6,875 miles and I used one stove the entire way.

  • That's amazing. I'm on my way to the store to get some fancy feast! Thanks for the instructions, I've been using a cat & tuna can stove but this looks much simpler and lighter.

  • How much fuel do you need to boil 2 cups of water? If you use too much fuel how do you put the stove out or do you just have to let it burn out?

    Excellent video and concept.

  • i have included details such as this, plus others, on my website. Under Backpacking Tips & Advice look for Techniques & How-To's.

I use about .7 oz per 2 cups, but results vary depending on your pot, windscreen, starting temp of water, etc. If I get a boil before the alcohol is used up, I usually let it burn out -- it's very difficult to blow out, and usually I judge it well enough so there is very little excess fuel.

  • Yes, not but not functionally. With this design, a cat food or tuna can is ideal because it is structurally capable of supporting the weight of a pot. If you cut the top off a soda can and punched some holes near the top, it would be very flimsy. A better idea would be to cut out the middle section of the soda can and nest the top into the bottom (of vice versa) so that it would be capable of supporting a pot.

  • can you use a soda can in a similar way?
