  • Send this to all the 49er fans Simon Phillips is one David Gilmour can adapt to any style He is amazing

  • I have loved and adored this mans music, especially his solo stuff sense the beginning, BUT, Pete totally botched this song!

  • Pete used David Gilmour as his guitarist as he feels David was a much better guitarist than he was, Pete will even attest. In fact, David was his first choice of guitarist for The Who's 1989 reunion tour but David was unavailable due to the Pink Floyd Momentary Lapse Tour was extended into a third year. Townshend would play with Gilmour again in 1996 at Hyde Park this time with The Who.

  • @jackskillet....very understandable on your emotions....this song is so much more than just a good beat and it's pretty much true Townshend at his most creative!! Good artists have "that special way" of conveying their angst and in doing so "they" make their listeners FEEL DEEPLY and in the end, we ALL sing along!! Keep Rocking my man...^5's

  • Yep. That's David Gilmore. Pete was quoted as saying at the time he really wanted to pair up David Gilmore and Simon Phillips based on their styles. He was right. You listen to Give Blood and their styles worked very well together, with Pete's guitar in the mix too. The Deep End band ruled...except that '80s bass the bass player is using. Man is that dated. :)

  • A classic song that reminds me of my days on the radio.

  • It is Gilmour

  • @RR122166 Fairly sure it is. Gilmour did such an amazing job on Pete's song "Give Blood".

  • Don't cry, leftists. This song is about how you should be ashamed of yourselves. You wanted to break apart the extended and nuclear British family and you are now suffering the consequences. Congradulations, Marxists!!!

  • Pete cultivates you with his meaningful lyrics then backs it up with a powerful hard rock beat. Genius. Songwriters listen up.

  • Just heard this on the radio, and it was worth looking up...

    Mr.Shneebly on lead guitar.

and the two back-up singers are hot mamas for sure...

    Pete never disappoints.

  • thanks

  • pete and dave... excellence..

  • That is for sure David Gilmour. That was fantastic, I think I am just going to sit here and watch Pete vids all night.

  • @cmackwell … Yea, I thought that was Gilmour too…

  • @cmackwell ....Me too!

  • Thats Pete !!!

  • looks kind of like gilmour in a nerdy haircut. i think that is gilmour, indeed!

  • looks kind of like gilmour in a nerdy haircut

  • Is that David Gilmour on guitar?

  • @2ubester2 Yep

  • there should be something learned.

    Have you learned?

    Have you?

  • The brass is awesome!!!!

  • i dont know why but im tearing up...unreal feeling..this...song...hard to describe what im feeling....feels good though... to moved this way...i just cant help it....its just that good...i was 23 yrs old when this concert took place....time has passed very fast....lots of love to all

  • is this available in full concert form, i love give blood, i think this is from the same video

  • Liked this song when I first heard it when I was 12. LOVED the song when I turned 40 and realized how much I related to it.

  • I was on the 3rd row for the 1st show of the Psycho Derelict tour (Great Woods in Massachusetts). The multi-media electronics for Derelict wouldn't work so Pete proceeded to play four hours of Who and solo music. Hands down the greatest rock-n-roll show I have ever seen.

  • damn I love his voice!

  • at 135 its david gilmour on guitar-floyddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

  • @dansdone Dave annonces his prescence with authority!

  • @dansdone Very cool! Would not have noticed!

  • Hey jjp, grow up. A studio recording is a "Museum-quality example", and bears little resemblance to "real music". Or haven't you seen enough live performances yet to know that? This is a great performance, full of heart, great tunes, and, yes, with a few mistakes, too. Real music.

  • This is my fav line-up. I love simon and pino

  • AWESOME! Petes THE GREATEST!

  • I would have given up a month of my life to have been at this performance.

  • I always thought this was a very honest song about Pete's reaction to being engulfed by all the 80s music at the time, he's like, "ah, I'm burned out, the train is leaving the station and I don't care." It's brilliant. And, I must add, was better than most of the music that came out in the 80s.

  • As a singer/song writer/rhythm guitarist Pete Townshend has always been one of my favorites and this song remains one of of his best.

  • No one tells a story through a song like Pete Townsend. Outstanding!!!!!

  • This performance is da bomb!

  • another jem frm ROCKPALAST

  • The 2nd guitar is also pretty good. I bet if he practices some and gets lucky he makes it someday.

  • Rythym section from Big Country

  • @bozo1168 REALLY? thats so cool

  • I'm continually amazed by this man's beauty and brilliance.

  • I'm sorry...but this is terrible. Pete flubbing his lines, the musicians not playing in key, the lame-ass horn section, and the off-pitch backup vocalists. Why couldn't they have just stayed as close to the original version as possible? They ruined this epic song that means so much to me and brings back so many memories of that time.

  • @jjp009 i beg to differ...this is a great version, i think that the horn section really...REALLY...adds to this song....i think its a beautiful version

  • @ultramagnus58 I respect your opinion. To each his/her own.

  • Strait and bang on.Tiss a pity the the solid is now gone,Keith and John. But hey, ,needed the horns and backing vocals to fill in,crazy eh.Though the best live grunt to studio perfection.Ain!t Pete the bomb.As is his true fluk masterpiece,Quadrophenia. .

  • Strait and bang on.Tiss a pity the the solid is now gone,Keith and John. But hey, ,needed the horns and backing vocals to fill in,crazy eh.Though the best live grunt to studio perfection.Ain!t Pete the bomb.As is his true fluk masterpiece,Quadraphenia. .

  • this was the end of rock. so sad rock was supposed to never die. this tune was awesome and the end of rock

  • The drummer looks like the one and only Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro and the lead axe player looks suspiciously like David Jon Gilmour. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Pete is one of the best at inspiring emotion!!! Bravo! Simon Phillips ROCKS and the piano... WOW!

  • @ChunkaTime Hey dude ..you're right about Gilmore..but the drummer is Simon Phillips...happy holidays

  • I really would be upset if the allegations against Pete had substance!

  • Simply......Amazing.

  • one of my most favourite songs, thanks

  • Nicolas Cage with a guitar, just amazing

  • Does anyone know the name of the sax player with the glasses? He seemed to be in a lot of 80's videos and concerts.

  • @Retroman27 I think Tom Scott (pulled a muscle in my brain coming up with that one)

  • one of the best songwriters of all time. this song was my go to on dates when I was 16 or so.

  • I've got to say, compared to a couple of the greatest bands of all time...The Who and Pink Floyd....this is quite an awful load of shit. The lights, the horn section, the backup singers, the bass, the sadly aging stars.

Pete Townshend and David Gilmour's work with the Who and the Floyd....flawless expertise. 2 bands with flawless discographies. After "It's Hard", and the movie version of The Wall in 1982, it seemed these brilliant artists became exausted. I mean, this is just a joke....wtf

  • @Blendeture so does that make endless wire a joke as well??

  • @invaderzimgirl14 Well...not necessarily a joke per se...but a somewhat tired effort, compared to their great past. Not the worst thing since 1982 though, I will say.

  • @Blendeture Well in a way I agree, BUT I discovered The Who through the album endless wire. so they had an amazing past, that doesn't mean they should quite trying right? anyway that's just my opinion, you probably feel differently.

  • @Blendeture With all due respect to your opinion: I didn't need to look in your profile to know you had yourself described as a musician, young enough to be my son.

As one who plays music, and many instruments, yes, it could have been done better. So, in that regard, we agree.

But I don't list myself as a musician.

I believe your audience decides that.

As for the video, perhaps we're hearing different songs:See my comment below.

Please, hold your anger if you respond.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • definitely need some better audio on this tune - the line up is classic.

  • Maybe it's just my age, or just the very creative lyrics and music, but unlike my friend below who has watched it 50 times since it has been posted, this song, among many, many others, continues to rattle around in my brain, easily brought to the front, by so many situations, always great ones.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • bom pra caramba!!!!!

  • Brilliant :)

  • Good oldies Thank God for You Tube

  • Legends on stage, Dave Gilmour, Pete Townshend, what else can you say? Some cock ups with the lyrics...Pete takes it all in stride, he's great, so he can!!! Bless you and your family Pete!!!

  • The AWESOME drummer is Simon Phillips

  • david on the other guitar?

  • @dandamagetoo Yep, that's David Gilmour.

  • brilliant lyrics

  • This song is brilliant!

  • That was in 1986. Where the hell has music gone today? Epic stuff.

  • as a life long fan of pete & the who,i still love to watch footage that i havent seen much of...& the deep end material is just that!!...thanks for the posts

  • and i don't dress like some republican mitt romney

  • Awesome

  • well aside from forgetting the lyrics a couple of times, missing a cue, and losing a high note, this is kind of nice.

  • @StretchPhotography . . . oh I get it....you're an ASSHOLE, huh.

  • it's a telecaster.doesn't hurt to have david gilmour in the backround.

  • Happy 65th PETE!!

  • Can't pretend that growing older never hurts. Dead on Pete... as usual.

  • I love when he fucks up on the lyrics and coooolly continues on.....

  • Pete seems a little bitter for some reason.

  • @cookieman38111 I agree, but then again the song is about bitterness. And then he forgets the lyrics for a moment--all in all a reason for bitterness.

  • Epic performance. Thanks for posting in 2007. I've watched it 50 times since then.

  • again, this is th most beautimus chord progression ever. well perhaps funeral for a friend .

  • Always loved this song. Lookit David Gilmour backing an old friend here. Nice having a great musician for a friend to gig along with ya when you need a hand. Very nice.

  • The most underrated solo sond by Pete

  • Great post! I remember when I first realized that Pete actually sang many of the Who songs. He was as good as Roger.

  • The drummer is master Simon Phillips. He is an awesome musician.

  • His drummer kicks some ass. He does some innovative stuff.

  • @mjpitche

of course: It´s Simon Phillips! ;-)

  • @mjpitche Simon Phillips..toured with the Who also.

  • @Jiggs46 He must have been a great change and a lift to the band from Keith Moon.

  • @mjpitche Of course, that would be the legendary Simon Phillips, Esq.

  • @mjpitche The one and only Simon Phillips!!!!

  • @mjpitche His name is Simon Phillips. Amazing drummer. He toured with The Who in the 80's

  • @matchgrip1234 I dont recall Simon touring w/ The Who> Kenny Jones was The Who's drummer in the 80's

Kenny was Rodger's friend from Rod Stewarts band The Faces .After Moon's death in 78 Pete was a spirtual and pyhsical wreck , thats when the decision was made to add Jones. My be3leif is , they wuld have had greater sucess in the 80's if Simon had gotten the job

  • @head5338 I tried to paste the link here to show you but for some reason it didn't allow me. You can search "Simon Phillips The Who" on you tube and enjoy!

  • @matchgrip1234 ohhh , DOH ! the Tommy revival in 89 , How could I forget that . That was an ass kicking tour lol , seen 2 shows on that tour . Good I hate forgetting prime moments in my life . peace

  • @head5338 The 80s were hard on me too....

  • Comment removed

  • @head5338 - I don't know where you get this theory ? The Who's demise was due to Pete Townsend's wish to terminate the band due to several factors. It was cerainly nothing to do with either Kenny Jones or Simon Phillips. If it was a factor, it played a minor part. Do your reading before you opinionate.

  • @mjpitche Thats Simon Phillips on drums!

  • @mjpitche

Simon Phillips - best drummer ever. Check him out with The Who, incredible!

  • Luv this live version - very underrated.

  • respect the flame

  • again 44th superbowl slit skirts most beautiful chord progression

    who dat!

  • Great video. I like the original studio release, one of my favorites and always will be. However I really really like this version with the addition of the brass. I play it all the time and it drives my wife crazy!!

  • Pete in a tough spot-sweating and slipping his words-"from all this, you'd imagine something must be learned-" Thanks for this post.

  • I think the studio version is a bit more melancholic. This is when he was getting back on track. and I think a certain user who shall remain nameless is covering up for his own inadequicy

  • Why don't you think its great?

  • That was the queerest reply.

  • dude, you are totally a white guy pretending to be a black guy, wow, man that's so pathetic.

  • @er2009... really. nice words. really mature. what, are you in third grade... wait sorry, I probably over-estimated... first grade. I bet the only real way you can make a half-decent comeback (in your mind) is if you put bloody sailor talk in a comment.

  • @er20092009... tosser.

  • Gilmour looks a bit like John Goodman minus a few dozen lbs... or stones as they say o'er there

  • pete forever colorado is my home and now yes its great.

  • Oh Yeah...Simon Phillips on drums. Love watching the guy do his stuff.

  • That's David Gilmour accompanying with the strat everybody.

  • @DeafFret That's not a Strat, expert.

  • Thanks Pete. I couldn't have even stood up, let alone perform...

  • Yo is that david gilmour

  • look at his face around 2:40-3:00 Poor Pete... He was so angry and I don't blame him... His life must have been a living Hell... and at that, those bastards criticized this song, and he poured his hear and soul into the song...

  • What was going on?

  • his marriage failing, all the people haranguing him about all the shit in his life.

  • These lyrics are RAW. Ouch. Love ya Pete!

  • Wow! Great lyrics!

  • the Pistol Pete face 2.50-2.55ish= every guy that's been married for more than 10 yrs

  • Pete's an artist - and I stress the word ARTIST

  • If any of you haters would care to know.

Pete's life was a living hell when he played this concert. If you knew anything about it, you'd shut-the-fuck up!

  • Just what was happening in Pete's Life at this time? Thanks.....

  • David Gilmour on guitar... interesting.

  • Jeeze Pete not your best show.

You forgot the big events of the day are past

    Much love anyway(anyhow anywhere)

  • Don´t think he forgot it..i think he had something in his throat, the line before his voice cracked a bit, so he just left out the line and coughed.

  • Rockpalast really did fantastic shows..Thanks.

And Pete is breathtaking..really lives the sing and the lyrics.

    Look at his facial expressions.

    Love him.

  • look at the key board players face at 1:13 when messes up.

  • Actually it was Pete that messed up...

  • sorry miss typed ment when pete messes up

  • Is that Clem Burke on Drums (Blondie?)

  • simon phillips

  • reminds me of Clem Burke, thanks

  • Great song, I always loved Pete's music.

  • essa música é incrível, assim como tudo o que PeteTownshend faz...

  • During this time when The Floyd was deciding on what to do after Waters departed, Gilmour was rent-a-guitar for awhile - he also played on a Supertramp album and with McCartney - he did eventually reunite the Floyd

  • This was a poor version of an excellent song. Was Pete high on heroin?

  • I always found this recording was the best one since the 80's. Just my opinion I guess. Raw at ..2:21..~Cheers mate.

  • did anyone notice that he messed up a line. he left out " no one respects the flame quite like the fool who's badly burned" awesome song though

  • actually it's Doug Gilmour on guitar! avec pistol Pete

  • What is David doing there?? I can barely see him playing! Go back to PF and let PT playing alone! he doesn't need anyone besides him!!! !

  • I'm sorry, but Monterey2am, your an idiot. You obviously have no clue about these bands as you don't even know who is in them

  • do i see a little resemblance to nic cage?

  • neither the who townshend and pink floyd gilmour jimmy page was in zep

  • Not a great song. 3/10 - must try harder

  • this is a great song

  • Simon Phillips!

  • The chicks in this video should have had slit skirts. You cant see any leg or crotch! wtf man!

  • as you see from the way he sings it and his faceal exprecions this really was song that ment somthing to him.
