The standard 1-5 is shot at 5 yards / meters which is where I ran this drill. I usually run in at 7 - 10 yards with farther target spacing. I sometimes run it at 25 yards also. The better you get at farther distances, up close seems very simple.
Although I still may want to purchase a Geissele trigger some time down the line, I am now very excited about building a better foundation, before I began any alterations. Thank you posting this wealth of information via your videos.
Great Video!! I am finally putting together my first ar-15 and the rifle is almost complete. Previously, I was set on purchasing a Geissele trigger, not because I thought it would help me shoot any better on this new platform, but because I absolutely love the feel of a quality trigger that is both crisp and light. Watching your videos has shown me the minimizing benefits of a non-USGI trigger at close ranges and that it that may be beneficial to first lean on a USGI trigger, on this platform.
Yes the ones posted are clean. I had a couple initial runs where I really screwed up round counts on targets and a couple misses. I normally run this drill from further distances, so up close, hits are not too big of a problem provided I am snapping and stopping correctly. My muzzle stays very flat so 5 yards is pretty easy. Misses are usually horizontal not vertical. Remembering how many rounds per target is often harder. :) But this was a split test.

Damn man, you're really blazing! Nice job, brother. I can't shoot that fast and make all my hits in the 6" or 8" target area running the 1-5 drill. Although I'll definitely improve, I've got a problem transitioning to targets like that and driving the gun really aggressively. Being in the chair makes it where my upper body is essentially a turret, since I'm not able to shift my hips from target to target. Anyhow, good shit bro.S/F
@RetreatHell Hey bro what kind of spits are you usually getting and what trigger? I use to run a 2 stage trigger but found my self not letting the trigger reset and f'ing up my strings. Went back to a USGI but usually can not get any faster than a .13/14 and usually a .16-.19
@ryusekai You would ask that. I never write my times down or go over them AFTER the fact, so I have no hard data. I also don't really run the 1-5 drill much anymore due to the amount of rounds needed, & it's frustrating if you have a round out or fuck up your time, because then those 15 rounds you just burned through don't even count. So I mainly do the 2x2x2 instead. I'm happy with anything under .20. Like you, I sometimes get down to lower teens, but I'd say I probably "average" .17 currently.
@RetreatHell are you using a G trigger or usgi? I dont write down time either, but know i have never done better than .13/.14. I would ask that??? lol
I also like the 2-2-2 and use it with students because as Mr. Lamb suggests it is indeed good for teaching tempo or target to target transitions and really working the muzzle end of the rifle on targets. Make no mistake, .17 splits is smoking this drill. The split times is not where the time difference comes from. It is more time to first shot and transitional speeds that can add up.
@ryusekai I've also gone back to a "standard mil-spec" trigger as of November 2011. Funny that when Surf starts using Geisseles, I stop using them & go to mil-spec, lol. I had the same issue as you with the SSA, I sometimes wouldn't reset the trigger & would press again.. and nothing. I currently use an LWRC trigger and shoot pretty damn well with it. Better than I ever have, actually.
I do plan on buying and trying out one of the new mil-spec triggers by Bill G's wife, they sound really good.
lol, don't get me wrong as I have been using an SSA for some time in a for fun rifle. Work rifles are USGI types. I really like the Geissele triggers, but for my own uses and what I am getting out of them, I am not going to be swapping out any more USGI triggers in my up close carbines at this price point.
You are an excellent shooter, chair or no chair. However no doubt that I or anyone would be a good bit slower as hip rotation would be a challenge. For myself my rotation is based around using a slight bend in my forward leg. Bending slightly at the knee rotates my hips. On a normal target spacing / distance it is not as noticeable but as target spacing increases it is much more prominent. I might try it from a seated position and not use my legs. Nice idea. :)
@ssdsurf Yeah, target spacing definitely makes a huge difference. It would be interesting to see you shoot from seated, although it's very challenging for someone to try and "turn off" a part of their body, because it naturally wants to do whatever is needed. Ensuring that your feet are together and straight the whole time would help to get a good feeling for it. If you could tie them together in one spot where they can't move, that'd be most ideal. But not sure it's worth that much effort :)
Nice video, thanks for the time. In my opinion, trigger jobs don't usually have any noticeable effect on accuracy within close range. Kick it out a bit to 200m-300m and that's where I see it, for myself anyhow. Great insight to cqb/drill shooting. Take it easy.
Thanks for watching and the comment. This test was based around the ability to run the trigger faster. For myself in a non-magnified non-precision rifle I really don't notice any appreciable gains in accuracy that I can directly relate to a trigger all the way out to 450+ yards. I have other video's on this also. I plan on another such test of trigger accuracy with a red dot optic. On a magnified precision rifle I like a slick trigger no doubt.
Dang Surf... You got me beat by quite a margin... No matter WHAT trigger you're using.
