MLB fans everywhere were indeed blessed because Ernie Harwell touched our lives for so many years. I once told Ernie a buddy's idea of Heaven was "a sloop anchored in a Lake Michigan cove, a model in a black string bikini reclining on its desk, a big cooler of Stroh's on ice and Ernie Harwell heard on a nearby radio broadcasting a Tigers game" Ernie loved that!!!!!
back in the 1960s my brother and i used to huddle around my 9 volt transistor radio at night to listen to the Tiger ball games on WJR. We could barely here the radio station since Detroit was about 80 miles away, it would fade in and out.
I can hear Ernie now, "its a full count,.... he winds and delivers,.... its a swing and a miss!....he struck him out".
You will always be loved Ernie Harwell, rest in peace.
Red Sox fan here. I can't say enough about this man. Detroit and Tiger fans, you were blessed to have this guy. What a great human being and baseball fan.
this video gets me every time. I grew up in the 90s listening to almost every game on the radio. I am so fortunate to have been able to enjoy my favorite sport with one of the best radio announcers of all-time. He truly meant the world to all Detroit Tigers fans and those who follow baseball. Baseball will never be the same as he called it. RIP Ernie. Thank you for everything.
Ernie, while it's sad knowing that we don't have you around for Opening Day today, we know that you and Sparky have the best seats in the house. I'll be watching the game today, but I'll be hearing your voice call it. God bless you, Ernie. We miss you.
I was on vacation when Ernie passed... not being able to go and pay my respects probably was the worst feeling in the world... He was the greatest man on the face of the earth...
being a born and raised an Atlanta sports fan, it's touches me to see all the love a local boy can get all the way up in Detroit........go tigers (my AL team),........and of course go braves.
thank you for taking the time out during a game to give me a shout out while i was at st. joseph mercy hopital in april of 87...you have no idea how many times i thought and thanked you during that month i was in there with 3rd degree burns to both legs and even to this day...God Bless You Ernie
Man, this LIFELONG Boston Red Sox fan is crying watching this tribute to the great Ernie Harwell!!! I KNOW heaven exists, I just hope they have baseball, and if they do, when I get there............................ I pray Ernie Harwell is calling the first game I get to hear on WHVN...
My only regret is that I never got to meet you in person. You will be sorely missed not only by Detroit Tigers fans but by the entire MLB community. You were the best broadcaster who has ever stepped into a booth and called a baseball game. You had so many great quotes over the years, and I will miss you for as long as I live. May you rest in peace. I know that you are up in heaven calling their baseball games. Say hi to the long lost Detroit athletes for me.
Ernie Harwell Was, Is & Always Will Be The Voice Of Detroit Tiger Baseball. God Bless You Ernie, Rest In Peace. You Brought So Many Memories To So Many & So Many Will Miss You & So Many Will Never Forget You.
Thanks Ernie, you were so much a part of my childhood, growing up in Detroit and listening to your voice all those nights over the radio--Rest In Peace Forever
Boy, I am a big Red Sox Fan, 51 and even bigger Baseball fanatic and student of the Game's History. This MAN was a true Legend... can't watch this Video without shedding a Tear.. R.I.P. Mr. Harwell ..
Ernie Harwell is the definition of LOVE!! He will be forever missed and forever loved...A one in a million man!! xoxoxoxo and R.I.P. Beautiful, Ernie Harwell ~
One of my best baseball memories is the summer ('92 or '93) my cousin and I took off along with a friend and toured around the midwest to several ballparks. I remember standing outside Tiger Stadium and meeting Mr. Harwell as he arrived at the park. He took the time to chat for a minute before going to work that day. He was the voice of baseball and there aren't many like him.
I may not have been around to hear Ernie Harwell for very long being born in December '84, I still remember him calling games when I would listen to games on the radio. You will be missed, Ernie. You will always be a Tiger. May God show peace and rest to your weary, wonderful soul.
Ernie, i was one of those kids who hid the transistor under his pillow back in the 70's. you were the voice of summer and of my youth. summer won't be the same again. thank you.
Just as Ernie would want the Tigers to keep living the "Go get 'em, Tigers!" motto, Go get 'em up there in Heaven, Ern. We know you'll be watching from up there.
The passing was sad but the celebration of this great man's life was far greater and whether it was John Sterling or Vin Scully or Ed Farmer in Chicago, there wasn't a broadcaster whose heart wasn't heavy this past Tuesday. In fact, Ernie is a firm reminder of innocence that stands the best and worst of times. He reminds us that baseball only divides us by the teams we root for rather from the origins that we come from. I would hope we all could dream to have that gift.
Ernie Harwell was popular with many people outside of Detroit. They found that out when they attempted to replace him with a younger guy.
My memory is a warm summer night with a slight cool breeze, the smell of Stroh;s beer and listening to the deep, calming voice of Ernie as he gave the plays.
Rest in peace ernie.. i went and saw you today you looked so peaceful.. thank you for the memories and may you look down on michigan from heaven always!
One of the great voices of the game. He was a kind gentle man who everyone liked b/c of his amazing skills in making a ballgame come to life on the radio. Crying helps a bit,but there will never be another Ernie Harwell. RIP
Ernie. Your voice has been a part of more than half of my life, sitting with my grandparents listening to you, you made me enjoy the game when I had no clue what was going on. Now I'm a die hard fan. Thank you, and God bless your spirit.
I hope for those people who were there that night you took this moment in because seeing a dying man say his final say in public really will get to you obviously. He lived a full life and not many people can say they lived to 92.
I met Ernie at a grocery store when I was 9 or 10 years old. I was there with my dad and I noticed him. I asked my dad if I could say hello, but he told me not to bother him. I must have said it loud enough for Ernie to hear because he came over and introduced himself to me. We ended up talking for about 15 minutes. I remember that day more vividly than almost any other day. I will miss Ernie so much. What a beautiful man.
Thank you Ernie. You're in every memory I have of the Tigers. You'll always be the voice of the Tigers. Detroit could never forget you. Farewell Ernie <3
RIP Ernie my friend.. Baseball will never be the same without your voice bringing us home. You were the heart of baseball, and that heart was broken in two the day you left
RIP god bless you ernie. your brought baseball into our homes like you were that old friend.. i wished i had your words.. i cannot tell you how i feel.
I feel that I have just lost the best part of my childhood...hearing Ernie's voice on a balmy summer night. I shall never forget you, Ernie Harwell. God blessed us with you!
If I can be HALF as good a man as Ernie, my life will have counted for something. God Bless you Ernie. HLB (Heaven League Baseball) just got the best there ever was.
You will be greatly missed Ernie. You are a special one among the legends.
i can remember the "Mickey Lolich" World Series Champions of 1968 and that really great "unbeatable" Detroit World Champions team of 1984. i am a DIE HARD CUBS FAN and baseball itself is greater than any of our teams. we are baseball fans first,Ernie knew this. You will always be missed and never forgotten,Ernie, even when You are "long gone".
Ernie Harwell, you will always be remembered as a true legend, and as a true "voice" of the Detroit Tigers. May heaven smile upon you and may rest in peace. You are always a real true friend to all of us.
Tiger fans got "two for the price of one," with Ernie Harwell...When I heard he passed I "stood there like a house by the side of road." He is a "souvenir for the lucky fans in heaven." I was at game 5 in 1984 when the Tiger's won the world series...I was 9...Ernie Harwell was special...
I knew this day was coming soon and I knew Ernie knew it was coming soon and he was going to go out with a smile on his face and his head on his shoulders. But I'm still sad.
@downonone515 - I saw that, too, at 2:25. The difference between Ernie and my beloved Harry Kalas is that Harry would have stopped and signed that ball.
I offered my condolences to all fans of Ernie Harwell as we in Phillies Nation are still mourning the loss of Harry Kalas back in April 2009.
However, in response to another poster who noted that an autograph seeker was shot down by Harwell, I noted that Harry Kalas, who openly adored Philadelphia sports fans, would never, ever, refuse anyone an autograph.
@AshburnStadium i agree and i dont think ernie would either. but there is a time and place. that was probably one of the most emotional moments in that mans great life. i dont know about you but im not hanging out of my seat right there for an autograph im gonna applaud and respect him.... we in detroit and everyone throughout the baseball community will never forget you ernie!
@AshburnStadium ... Ernie was not retiring... he was essentially giving his own eulogy... he had very recently received the news that he was terminal and wanted to say his thank yous and goodbyes... so that ahole who wanted an autograph is the one who should be criticized here along with you, for such a stupid comparison.
A legend has passed. Thank you, Ernie, for all those wonderful summer days and nights. Some of the fondest memories of my childhood are falling asleep listening to your voice, my smuggled-in transistor radio laying next to me on my pillow while you did the play-by-play for one of those late-night Tigers' West Coast games. You were the best, and, more importantly, you were simply a wonderful human being. You'll never be replaced.
It must be a very sad day in Detroit. As a Phillies fan who lost Harry Kalas last year, I certainly know how Tigers fans must feel. My most sincere condolences to Tigers Nation!
Ernie Harwell represents everything that is great in baseball... we will miss you Ernie. I owe much of my love for the Tigers to your voice. Ernie you are Tiger baseball... God bless you
From a Yankee fan, my prayers and condolences are with Tiger fans tonight.
I have listened to Vin Scully and Joe Tait & Herb Score and Milo Hamilton as a child, when you sit and think how these gentlemen reached across generations and painted pictures in the summer nights that we envisioned on the back porch or in the yard as the lighting bugs flew in the air really made us forget life and it's troubles even if for just a few hours.
The next announcer has BIG shoes to fill, have fun trying.
God, I love this man. Ernie, the voice of the Tigers before the days of cable TV and internet broadcasts, was the voice of the Tigers to me in my childhood. He was the representation of the Tigers in the home of a boy whose dream was to some day replace Whitaker at 2nd on the corner of Michigan & Trumbull. I love you Uncle Ernie!
P.S. Do you think you could pull some strings with the Big Guy upstairs so we can get a catcher who hits above the Mendoza line?

Greetings from a long time Braves fan living in Europe. Sorry for the loss, Tiger fans. All true baseball fans will stand with you to salute this great man. RIP Ernie.
I wanted to take a drink tonight for ernie.. and i did. and i took another and another! this drunkeness is for you! (this really is a compliment)... i shall miss you ernie. GO TIGERS!
In the 31st, and most turbulent year of of my life, you came to Southern California and helped to bridge the ancient rift that exists between father and son. We didn't see much eye to eye in those days, but sharing a game with you bridged a gap, for which I will forever be grateful.
Tiger fans were truly blessed, to have you there for so many seasons.
tiger baseball is silent tonight with the loss of one of the great ones.i was just watching an old western. one cowboy said, it's quiet tonight. the second one says, yeah, too quiet. i know just how that second cowboy felt.
RIP Ernie. Everytime I watch this I only hope that I can be so blessed at the age of 91! Did you see the way he walked right out onto that field. God bless you Ernie!
Just hearing Ernie's voice brings back so many strong memories from my childhood. It's a voice that makes you feel good. He will be missed so much. He said that his death would just be another adventure. I hope you enjoy it Ernie. Thank you so much for providing so many with wonderful memories that will last us until we begin the adventure which you have just started. God bless, and thanks again.
Growing up falling asleep listening to you on a hot summer school night (don't tell mom)-- I will never forget. What a classic voice and a great human being. Imagine what mankind could accomplish if we were all just a little more like Ernie
God has blessed us with one if the biggest hearts in sports history. Ernie, you were the greatest and will dearly, dearly, be missed. Thank you for what you've given us TIgers/Baseball fans, you will never be forgotten.
Thanks for the many memories of listening to you on a calm sunny day... at the park, in the car, with the family, on the porch. God bless you Ernie, and peace be with you in your new adventure with The Lord.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Harwell. You will be missed. As a young boy in Michigan, you were the one constant I could always count on. Life was changing before my eyes, but you were always there, on the radio, to help me escape with the Tigers. Thanks you and God bless.
I remember you calling games when I first started listening to the Tigers' games on WSOO 1230AM radio all the way back to 1975. It was an honor and a privilege not just for myself, but for all baseball fans to have listened to you calling the games for over 60 years.
Ernie had the amazing ability to make you feel like you were his long time friend when you listened to him in the booth. This is such a sad day for Detroit. I will always remember him. R.I.P.
Rest In Peace, Mr. Harwell. You will be missed. As a young boy in Michigan, you were the one constant I could always count on. Life was changing before my eyes, but you were always there, on the radio, to help me escape with the Tigers. Thanks you and God bless.

Rest In Peace Ernie. You truly made Tigers baseball enjoyable for me. If it wasn't for you I would of never picked up a baseball glove and be the Tigers fan I am today. I know this post on YouTube means nothing, and you'll never read it. But I hope your voice carries on through Comerica Park every game. Love and miss you already.
Ernie Harwell died today at his home in Detroit, he died from cancer after a year long battle. At the age of 92 he leaves behind his wife Lulu. my prayers go out to the entire Harwell family, friends and fans. He was a baseball announcing legend, and legends never die, he will always remain with us who have always loved him. Rest in piece Ernie. 1918-2010.
There was a sign that I saw when they were scanning the crowd and it said "Baseball is Ernie Harwell." I think that is all there is needed to know about Ernie. My earliest memories are of being outside on summer days and listening to him call games. Even if the Tiger's weren't very good, he made the games entertaining and enjoyable. Besides baseball, he is also one of the greatest men to ever walk the face of God's green Earth. There will never be another like him
I remember as far back as the mid 70's when I first got into baseball, and I would hear the voices of Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey call the games. I would turn the radio in my room on at night onto WSOO 1230AM and listen away as they would call the game as I would fall into the deep slumber for the night.
Broadcasters like Ernie Harwell are almost no more (Vin Scully also comes to mind, but that's it). They don't call them like Ernie has done since the late 30's/early 40's.
I didn't grow up a baseball fan so I don't have the same connection to Ernie most do, but after getting a job with the Tigers I was able to meet him, I'm glad I did.
@dustyb58 better late then never. Ernie is a saint walking among men. Not only was he the voice so many of us grew up and loved, but he is one of the best human beings to walk this earth. It saddens me that he will soon no longer be with us. Hopefully those who have been fortunate enough to meet him will pass a little of Ernie on as they go on with the journey of their lives....
every time i here Ernie H. voice it reminds me of my dad, because baseball season there was my dad after work listening to tiger baseball, and when he retired he was still listening to tiger baseball, and the same unmistakable voice was there as well, Ernie on radio, these will be sweeeeeeeeet memories for me as long as i live !!!
For me, it's my grandmother. We'd go to visit her just about every Sunday when I was a kid, and when it was during baseball season you'd pretty much invariably hear either Ernie's voice or Paul Carey's booming from the radio in her kitchen as you entered her house.
It will never be the same without Ernie Harwell, I rmember just watching the games to listen to his voice...wasn't a great game and Cecil Fielder or Kirk Gibson had struck out 2 or 3 times. But Ernie was still goin at it in the booth with his calming and unique voice. He will be missed!
i know right... he's telling fans he's accepting the fact that he has inoperable cancer and a couple of months to live and that asshole wanted his autograph....

There are ZERO people behind the mike today, in New York City, who would even come close to earning the tributes now being paid to EH.
According to that guideline, New York City is the poorest area of the country, bar none; complete media bankruptcy.

njac1946 1 year ago
@njac1946 - OK, name ONE NYC area sportscaster that has Ernie's gifts, both professionally and personally.
ALL local TV statons = NG.
Ron Darling (Mets) is very very good, but not in EH's stratosphere.
Al Rosen (I hope I have that name correctly) of the Rangers, the same, if not better, and the closest to EH that I can think of. But not the same..
The Yankees media? A disgrace. As is the NYRA media (horse racing).

@downonone515 - I saw that, too, at 2:25. The difference between Ernie and my beloved Harry Kalas is that Harry would have stopped and signed that ball.

@marc1989000 - Did you see my original post?
I offered my condolences to all fans of Ernie Harwell as we in Phillies Nation are still mourning the loss of Harry Kalas back in April 2009.
However, in response to another poster who noted that an autograph seeker was shot down by Harwell, I noted that Harry Kalas, who openly adored Philadelphia sports fans, would never, ever, refuse anyone an autograph.

@AshburnStadium i agree and i dont think ernie would either. but there is a time and place. that was probably one of the most emotional moments in that mans great life. i dont know about you but im not hanging out of my seat right there for an autograph im gonna applaud and respect him.... we in detroit and everyone throughout the baseball community will never forget you ernie!
lhs3331 1 year ago

In the 31st, and most turbulent year of of my life, you came to Southern California and helped to bridge the ancient rift that exists between father and son. We didn't see much eye to eye in those days, but sharing a game with you bridged a gap, for which I will forever be grateful.

Ernie,
I remember you calling games when I first started listening to the Tigers' games on WSOO 1230AM radio all the way back to 1975. It was an honor and a privilege not just for myself, but for all baseball fans to have listened to you calling the games for over 60 years.
We will all miss you.
Mr Harwell, thank-you.

Ernie, Thank-you.

For me, it's my grandmother. We'd go to visit her just about every Sunday when I was a kid, and when it was during baseball season you'd pretty much invariably hear either Ernie's voice or Paul Carey's booming from the radio in her kitchen as you entered her house.
mdumas43073 2 years ago
@xmanswdet That was exactly the same with my dad! Ernie Harwell's voice was as well-known in our house as all the family members' voices were.
