John does your talents have no limits? I must say I have been watching your videos since one of my galantvr4,org members(the boz) recommended you I can see that you are truly passionate about what you do, old school with pizzaz mixed with new age technology awesome. I do have a 2.0l 4g63t that will need a rebuild soon do you do full rebuilds or just machine work.
Why wouldnt you take all the freeze plugs and oil galley plugs out first? I run a Ampro/Sunnen machine that can easily do a V12 cat block and mabey 8 small blocks at a time, and my experience is that the shot gets stuck behind the plugs, also any plugs that are left in after cooking will leak.I really enjoy your videos.
That tumbler doesn't use any kind of fluid? Wouldn't there be powerized dirt or whatever clinging on to cast iron surfaces that wouldn't come by just by rotating and rocking back and forth?
I don't know why but I find these videos fascinating. I love watching this stuff get done and explained to me. I wish I knew how to do this stuff - it seems like fun and you probably get to meet some cool people in the process.
i feel the same way, john has me wanting to work in a machine shop now! probably only his, he seems like a cool cat who's willing to really put the R&D in R&D
If the shot can be tumbled out, there is no problem. Soda blasters are expensive to run - electricity to operate the compressor and the cost of the one-time-use soda.
Why not use an ultrasonic cleaner? No Shot blast or heat or shaker tumbler. Which means one machine less electric used+quicker+no chance of damage of shot! cos its ultrasonic cleaning it cleans all internal+external bits you'd never be able to reach oil galeries water jacket's liners. I use one at work now to clean heat exchangers. Saved us a fortune not having to fit new parts+time taken. its Amazing!
I love the way the machines are setup in a line and a winch lifts the engin from place to place. we have to lift by hand from place to place. wish my boss whould copy yor setup
Absolutely astounding. I love seeing parts go from dirty, to beautiful. im amazed at how well of a job those machines do in cleaning the block. what are normal prices for doing a block like that?
Unfortunately Sunnen has stupidly quit making about 90% of the equipment that I have in my shop, but the TCS is a really great piece of equipment for cleaning and other applications. See my vid on cylinder head straightening. John...
that block sure is pertty

if the block doesn't need to be re-bored will this process ruin the bore finish ?
can it be simply honed or will the bore finish be so rough that it need to be re-bored ?
shodanxx 1 year ago
John, I've got the same question. I've got a block that only needs rings. Is this process ok If I only plan on honing?
kallehof 1 year ago
@shodanxx - It's not a problem, we do this all the time, but I would recommend you have your block honed on a machine, and not by hand.

Hi there, NICE video. How much does that cost? Is it expensive?
jandri2 4 years ago
Most blocks run about $85, including main caps. Blocks are sprayed with 12-34 when they come out of the tumbler to prevent rusting.
