Unfortunately, the victories of too many great generals were against armies of inferior training, equipment or leadership. Despite their numbers the Persians never were a match for the Greeks, Alexander's victories were almost a forgone conclusion. The greatest commanders are those who triumphed over true peers - opponents of equal armament and resources. Given those parameters, Robert E. Lee, Napoleon, Wellington, Nelson, and of course others, must also be considered "great."
@TOTCD If you don't think the Macedonians were superior to the Persians in training, equipment and leadership, you're wrong. The Greeks were better organized, much beter led, and better armed and armored. Chariots and elephants were easilly overcome and almost universally abandoned after the Persians. Even Hannibal could not make elephants effective. In every battle on land and sea between the Persians and Greeks, with or without Alexander, the Greeks were outnumbered but seldom outfought.
@horselips Didn't the persians had way more heavy cavalry and after Issus they armed them with longer spears. The chariots were dangerous and was not abandoned after the persians.
Matter of fact Punic generals still used chariots around 280-270 BC. Elephants were very effective in battle.
Except if you're telling me that you wouldn't be scared of facing one elephant with a shield and a sword.
Now imagin 50-80. Persians used greek hoplite mercenaries 2. The size of their empire shows us sthg
@TOTCD OK, so the Great King ponied up for some long spears. He still equipped his infantry with wicker shields (!) and cloth shirts and hats for armor. Chariots were still abandoned worldwide within 50 years of Alexander. Please list battles won with elephants. Porus lost with his, and at Zama Hannibal's elephants did more damage to Hannibal than to the Romans.
@horselips But the phalanx was not deployed during the battle of hydaspes river.
They fought elephants with sword and shields. Elephants have a huge impact on the morale and easily kill the heaviest infrantry. Zama? They beat the elephants by opening gaps and letting them charge into them.
They never could have known that if they hadn't fought elephants before.
Alexander was the first Western commander to face so many elephants.
And he overcame them. Read the generalship of Alexander the great
@TOTCD As for hiring Greek Hoplites mercenaries, Darius knew his own infantry was poorly armed, badly trained & organized, and poorly led, & they had no chance of standing against the Greeks without their own Greeks backing them up. the Persians had nothing like the specialized weapons of the Greeks- sarissa, dory & xiphos, & the bronze armor and helmets, & huge wood and metal shields. The Persian empire was large, rich & powerful - but only so long as it contended with powers on their level.
@horselips Yes but they did hire them didn't they? Elephants were used at heraclea and helped with the battle against the Romans. My friend you speak of war as if it were easy. Alexander won most of his battle trough courage. Better equipment doesn't mean that you can take on three men and win. Persians outnumbered the Macedonians by 2 to 1 in most battles. And had way more horses. Macedonian phalangites were indeed the backbone of the macedonian army.
“Alexander came by the statue of his father and spoke loud:`Youths of the Pellaians and of the Macedonians and of the Hellenic Amphictiony and of the Lakedaimonians and of the Corinthians… and of all the Hellenic peoples, join your fellow-soldiers and entrust yourselves to me, so that we can move against the barbarians and liberate ourselves from the Persian bondage, for AS Hellenes WE should not be slaves to barbarians.” (Callisthenes of Olynthus 1.15.1-4>)
@sitlord75 "For I (Alexander I) myself am by ancient descent a Greek, and I would not willingly see Hellas change her freedom for slavery." (Herod. IX, 45, 2 [Loeb])
Alexander the Great, should be Emphized as a leader of "Wisdom , having the entire "Geneva Conventions in his mind before the existance of the Gevena Conventions, that is, attacking only the Combatants, but giving the Ethnic defeated peoples'"EQUAL Respect in the Greek Dominion Democracies of the Golden Fleece Equivalence Democracies from Asia Minor to across the Mediterranean""!!Alexander's respect for the Ethnic Asians of Babylon as equal Trade & Commerce partners should be emphazised"!!!
He lives and he reigns?....Well, truth is he is very much dead and the only thing he reigns over is the last bit of dust that use to be his skeleton. Oh well, lol.
That movie sucked, It showed Alexander indecicive in battle, relying too much on his friends help, not able even to carry a sword (battle of Gaugamela). The worst was the battle of Hydaspes where they show it as an inconclusive battle were in reality it was a battle where Alexander wins and he kills Poru's son and captures Porus. In reality he does not get injured either in this battle.

you are so right. Colin Farrell was a complete disappointment. but the script should have been tighter and less sidetracked. Convincing the audience of what truly made him great.
Decent movie, too bad I hate Colin Farell. What a turd. They need to make a good, contemporary movie about Napoleon Bonaparte. An even better general than Alexander in my opinion. Anyone that disagrees, we should discuss this because its a fun argument.
This is true, but Napoleon had to build an army from basically scratch, reform officer structure and corruption, repel waves of invaders and somehow go on the offensive conquering most of Europe an north Africa. Yes, he lost battles, but he also fought a lot more and had a lot more adversity. Alexander took a bad-ass army and marched on nations not used to his phalanx/light cavalry tactics, an army already forged, and with a secure government(relatively)and stable nation(relatively)to back him.
Yes this is true, Alexander had a forged army at his disposal. But Napoleon Bonaparte was an experienced general when he became ruler of France, Alexander was a 20year old boy. At the age of 20, he had to face his father's generals to accept him as a ruler, a great revolution in north (Thracians, Illyrians etc.) and to the south an another revolution by the cities of Athens and Theves.
Also, Alexander was at the first line of the battle leading his cavalry while Napoleon Bonaparte was sitting at a top of a hill giving orders and watching the battle with his spyglass(as a result, he could manage his moves during the battle better). Another thing is that Alexander's army was always much more smaller than the enemy's army in every battle that he fought.
That is true- he was always outnumbered. But 20 years old back than is hardly a boy. Richard the Lionheart even in the medieval age picked up the sword to defend his French holdings at age 15. I do agree that Alexander was more of a bad-ass, leading his cavalry charges as opposed to Bonaparte sitting in the background.
Although I think both of them were excellent generals and because they lived in totally different periods of time, it is hard to compare them. On the other hand, my favorite general and I think he is the best general of all was Hannibal Barca (personal opinion). A general who marched against a very powerful nation (Rome) and won great battles against them. His army was mercenaries and always outnumbered against the legions of Rome. I cannot imagine how he crossed the Alps during winter.
Good choice. Not only did he cross the Alps in winter, but with large tropical mammals, and in a very short period of time(like a week!!!). That has to be one of the greatest marches in history. Too bad the Numidians turned on Carthage, think how western history would have changed if Rome was conquered??
@alkis6 I have to disagree. Hannibal was a great tactician, but really lacked as a strategist, Alexander was supreme in both of these areas, and his march through the Hindu Kush was much more gruelling than that of the Alps, so I think Alexander would rank higher than Hannibal.
Actually Napoleon fougth at the front like Alexander when he captured the city of Toullon. And he also endangered himself in several battles. This was not practicly in the long run though, because it made it difficult to lead the army....
@alkis6 actually he lost one skirmish at begining of siege of Halikarnassos and his first assaults on Tyre was repulsed until naval aid arrived weeks alter but he eventually won those battles too
@alkiv8 I liked the movie 2 . But with the money and resources and Vangelis he could've done a way better movie ! And I also didn't like the fact that Alexander was blond . Because he had brown hair . And they emphasised his sexuality 2 much instead of what made him great ! They didn't explain the battle of gaugamela well so the people didn't really understand what was so impressive with his cavalry charge .
He was the greatest , the movie should've been the same stuff. Megas Alexandros!

@horselips You couldn't be more wrong.
The persians were equally armed during the battle of Issus and gaugamela.
They even had chariots and more cavalry and archers.
Alexander destroyed them by thinking outside of the box.
he did the same at hydaspes river where he defeated an army of 30 000 plus war elephants.
He was truly great. Don't look down on the persians. The size of their empire tells you shouldn't look down on them and their armies
