In Kirby's Dream Land (kirby's 1st game) he was white on the NA box and monochrome in game. Miyamoto voted yellow; Sakurai, pink. Nintendo of Japan decided on pink and he was portrayed as that color in the JApanese launch. In NA, he was promoted as white. Kirby was a dummy character that the developers used until they could define a more sophisticated image. Kirby was also originally called Popopo, but was renamed Kirby after the line of vacuums (get it? they both suck).

@Vyse220 I think you've missed the point. Kirby being pink has nothing to do with the (western) box art. Masahiro Sakurai, who created kirby, has stated he was always supposed to be pink. (But since the first kirby game was black&white... Supposedly Shigeru Myamoto thought kirby was yellow...) - The box art only proves that the marketers in the west depicted him the same way this ad does.
