  • 0:34 oo la la! and i love the hair there

  • This version is so beautiful <3

It's one of my favorite version, i like it better than the version by Michael Ball but the version is great.

Even the version Hungarian is great.

But the version by John is perfect <3

  • omgi wanna see him in this musical now~

  • i dont even need to hear it before i press "like"

  • Gosh, doesn't JB look different here!

  • Why can't stop imagine him doing this in the Tardis

  • The man can sing the phone book and I'm happy

  • I love John Barrowman's version. He really attacks all the words and gets the character. Love him!

  • i love him he is so good

  • Que horror que tipo tan petulante, se ve sobrado en el escenario. Canta super bien pero la actitud equivoca no me gusta para nada.

  • I love Michael Ball, he is a terrific singer, but Sunset Boulevard is an American musical, John Barrowman nails it, this version is dead on, his tone, his attitude, PERFECT!

  • klass

  • @earlady66 Elaine Paige is a fantastic performer, but as Norma Desmond? Glenn Close is far more fitting for that role than any of the previous leads I've encountered... Elaine Paige for me is Grizabella and Evita (in her earlier performances, of course).

  • wow he is amazing! the one problem i have is the way he slides up to the note on "boulevard" but other than that he's fantastic

  • I saw him in this in '94 in West End! Sooo good!!

  • @Jodagirl

    I'm totally jealous !! :)

  • JOHN BARROWMAN!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!! However, I don't think I can see him as anything other than Captain Jack Harkness.

  • What a great voice John

  • This musical indeed is the best one in my life. Though I did not have the chance to watch by my eyes, but I really enjoying listen to the music!

  • Wow. My parents told me this musical was rubbish, but its soooo not!

  • fabulous sung by john, i just love him, he is my idol and i am only 16 but who cares,i think he is fab xxxxxx

  • He says this is the wordiest song he's ever done, it must have been before he did Anything Goes in that case cos You're the Top is far more wordy!

  • more wordy yes but the speed of the songs are very different. think half of what is said in here you need to follow carefully. Cole porter did but a lot of words in his songs but Webber with this song wow...and dont get me started on the wordiness of Sondhiem!

  • @crazyphan18 but Lloyd Webber doesnt write his own lyrics....

  • @KaraokeKid22 this is very true but he supervises them quite well...why else would he fire and rehire so many when working on a show...

  • Wow now I have to listen to all of Sunset Boulevard. This is the first song I've heard from it.

  • @cassluvsmusic Be sure when you listen to Sunset Boulevard, be sure Norma Desmond is Elaine Paige. PERFECTION!! !

  • @cassluvsmusic I'll do the same only if John's in it! XD

  • Great job...one of the best male singers on Broadway today....don't agree on his tie being undone for the scene.....

  • Hahaha AGREED. I guess he's supposed to look like he's ready to get down to business.

  • I'm not a native speaker of English and I don't think I quite understand what the guy at the start of the video said. He said, "Although with any luck in future years, we will be looking back on this as his [blank] period..." What's that word in the place of [blank]? Would someone help me, plz?

  • The word is "early".

"Early", in this tense, is reffering to the beginning of his career. It is meant as a joke because Andrew Lloyd Webber has been around for a while and he has written many musicals.

  • Thank you. I feel so silly asking this question.

  • Don't worry about it. ^_^ English is one of the most insane languages to learn.

  • Oh, I didn't see that someone had already replied. Apologies :)

  • early, we will be looking back on this as his early period...

  • blank = early

  • early

  • Comment removed

  • [blank]=early

  • The word is "early."

  • i love this song!! but what the hell did he do to his hair??? omg!!

  • this song is amazing, and John does a fantastic job at it!

  • great performance, great voice!!

  • sunset boulevard is immense

  • Love John Barrowman and his voice!

I never knew he could sing THIS well!!

  • Great performance, actually, i just saw the netherland´s version yesterday, i didn´t understand a word of the lyrics, but the music was great ;-) I love Webber´s works anyway.

    Thx 4 posting

  • I saw the dutch version yesterdag, as well (I'm dutch myself, so I did understand the lyrics ;))

As usual, the english lyrics are slightly better, but I'm really fond of the dutch translation.

I especially loved this song. Don't know why, it's just really strong.

  • I just saw the Pal Tamas clip, and I have no words.... just wonderful (But John is still better I think)

  • I'm happy to hear that you liked it! I can understand why you prefer John's performance. He is an actor , while Tamas is just a singer with a very nice voice. :)

  • John's musical is great.

  • john barrowman is just fantastic- i've seen him in theatre and everything about him is just fantastic

  • John has an amazing voice but he's so presentational. He gestures absolutely everything he's singing about and the only way he has to emphasize a word is by growling it at you. Don't get me wrong he's a great performer, and a fantastic singer, I just think his performance isn't as honest because of all the hand motions he's doing

  • hes not bad.

but the voice is suppose to be more powerful and deeper i think.

you cant tell in certain words he doesnt feel it.

  • I just can't like anyone's version as much as Hugh Jackman's. It's like I understand and am convinced by Hugh's perfomance so well that when John Barrowman and Michael Ball sing it, it just sounds like any other song. I think I'd like this more if I hadn't heard Hugh's version though!!! :)

  • I'm used to listening to the Alan Campbell version on the CD I have, but his pronunciation of "Boulevard" is very strange. It's probably my second favourite after JB now.

For me, it's all about how they do the 1st bridge: "You think I've sold out..." etc.

  • his pronunciation of boulevard is probably just a mix of his scottish and american

  • I don't understad the fuss, either. Completely agree with you.

  • Its not just ok....its amazing lonving it !! x

wow suck a good song for john !!!

  • Yeah this version is okay. I've listened to Michael Ball's version first. Michael Ball has a tension in his voice that makes me think its fits the period this is supposed to be in (the 40's or 50's). There's a gritty weariness to his voice that John Barrowman doesn't have. But I love John Barrowman and this is a great version.

  • Best. Performance. Of. This Song.

    Ever

  • Does anyone know where I can get the chords for this?!?! (for free)

  • Dont you love that clarinet?

    ^_^

  • He's got a great voice but he is a little too showy.

  • TAKE THAT BACK

  • NEVER!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Let me explain my point of view: Joe Gillis is a cynic, not a showman. This version of the song is the equivalent of Gillis standing up in a crowded room and giving a rousing speech about Hollywood instead of pondering quietly to himself by the side of the pool. He may have been more subdued and realistic in the actual show, but here he is looking to impress the audience with his voice instead of expressing Gillis's emotions. Hence: Lovely voice, but a little showy.

  • I loved this song before I heard John sing it.

    Now...holy shit.

    *flutters fan to cool herself*

  • he's very good this is the first time I've seen John Barrowman sing I've only seen him really on "Doctor Who" I think I prefear Alan Campball though with this song on the Los Angels soundtrack but that's only because I listen to that soundtrack all the time Barrowman is still good though

  • excellent!

  • beautiful

    i melted multiple times

  • John Barrowman singing Andrew Lloyd Webber??

    *faints*

  • I have admired John for years and he is an excellent musical theatre star. however, he is in serious danger of being over exposed with all his TV appearances. He will be reading the weather next.

  • Saw him perform this at Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday in the park in Hyde Park yesterday and we were right at the front and he was amazing! SO good, I really felt all the emotions. Amazing. x

  • Sameee. Omg he hasss such ana amazing voice and I LOVE this song.

  • How much did you love that whole concert? Especially John singing and presenting! Wow I was awestruck the whole night.

  • Ahhh! Loved it! LOVEDDD IT! Yeah although he messed up like every now and then I still love him :P

  • He really does have a fantastic voice. I absolutely love Torchwood but I wish he'd do another musical too.

    xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

  • i think he is lined up to do another musical soon !!! but not sure wat one!

  • ooh, seriously? *googles madly*

    xoxoxoxoxoxoxox

  • nothins comfired yet i dont think but there is tlk about it! so hopefully he is!!! :D

  • Much, much better than when he was doing the original run in the West End. There's a clip on here of he and Betty Buckley (as Norma Desmond) and in it when he sings "Sunset" in "Sunset Boulevard" he does this awful slide down between "Sun" and "set," over-enunciating the "n", that forms the word in a funny way, extends it to three counts instead of two and just sounds so sloppy. This is much improved.

  • woop is any one else going to alw's birthday in the park???? just got my ticket!!! sooo excited! :)

  • I was also thinking of buying a ticket, but I am Italian, for me it would be kind of a problem. I don't know if there are still ticktes now...Anyway, if you go, please write something about the experience. Thanks. Silvia

  • omg i am too!!

    i cant wait!!

    :D

what time are you getting there?

because we're not sure what time to go. The doors open at 4.30.

  • im not sure wat time we will get there cause its going to be busy!!! wat time are u gettin there ?

  • Heck Yeah i am ( but forbes you knew that already) IM SOOO EXCITED for ALW's party !!!im not sure what time we'll get there probarbly about lunchtime ?? coz id bet my bottom dollar it will be bussier than the January Sales :D IM SOOOO EXCITED!!!!

  • better than Michael Ball

  • Sorry I think Michael Ball is the best, but john is still good. Glad we can enjoy both men.

  • Oh I love this Version!!!

  • Wow this guy is good... rather ironic that a song from Sunset Boulevard called "Tell Me On A Sunday" was used as a sing-off on CBC's "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" (on which John Barrowmen is a judge!)

  • no - "Tell Me On A Sunday" is not from Sunset Boulevard...its from "Tell Me On A Sunday" also by Andrew Lloyd Webber

  • Now i think there should be a musical episode of torchwood, it would be amazing with his voice!

  • he is one of my favourite Wets End stars!

    he is so talented :D

it would be so cool to work alongside him

  • OMG. I love John singing this song! Also Night and Day in De-Lovely. I like how he interpreted the song - the stresses in some words like "frenzy" and the lighter pace in "well, I'm a writer". He would be an excellent Joe Gillis in the movie as he connects the camera well.

  • God, I wish I was gay.

  • If the Sunset Blvd movie ever goes ahead, John would make an amazing Joe Gillis.

  • where are you going to see him ???

  • I'm a bit upset with this trend of taking a movie then making a musical based off it and then adapting the musical into a movie.

  • yer i do agree i think some things sould just be left as the orginal xxx

  • Some movies really need to be a musical just like Sunset Boulevard, and make this musical a musical movie is just something everyone will love... [if they pick a good Joe]

  • IM GONNA GO SEE HIM!

    Faenol '08

    So Excited!

Im actually looking at my John poster now too.

    xD

    yes i am obsessed

  • were u going to see him i've been trying to find were i can go and see him????!!!!

  • where are you going to see him ?! Tell us please, we are all obsessed!

  • I saw John in April :D

He's Just finished his UK tour !

But he's in Panto at Christmas in Birmingham :D

  • JOHN IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOT

  • one of my very favorite songs that he's done. Thank you for sharing!

  • This is such an emotional and really kl song! sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber and John Barrowman make such a good duo. I mean as, he writes the songs and John sings them.

  • i luv him so much hes so cool. ive watched the other people singing it but john's the best

  • someone posted that michael ball owns this song well he was good but not a patch on john barrowman he is awesome singing this

  • Oh! If only I was 40 and John Barrowman wasn't gay! :) lol.

  • When I hear this song I am sooo jealous of Betty Buckley. I want a man like John Gillis:(

  • this is one of the best sonmgs i have ever heard

  • I love this song. One of my favorites from this musical. I like his gesturing too.

  • How old is he?

  • 40 I think...

  • i saw john in alddin hees awsome nd totally kills this song!!!!!xx i lov him

  • I enjoyed this! But, I still think that Michael Ball owns this song.

  • Sometimes it depends who you see doing it first, I saw him doing this role in the west end YEARS and YEARS ago and he was amazing! To me he is Joe Gillis :-D

  • hes so cool! :) lloking forward to torchwood tomorrow

  • My he's amazing. XD *is speechless*

  • John's so sexy :)

  • is he really gay? that's a pity:(

  • He had a civil partnership a few years ago, and he's been with his partner Scott Gill for nearly 16 years :) They're very sweet together.

  • he is cuter:D

  • AAAH keep your hands in your pockets!!

    I love this song though.

  • Please check my version folks from my videos. SUNSET EDİZ. Enjoy

  • i did enjoy ur version better than John's, cheers BUD...and ur cute too,LOL

  • yes, me too:)

  • i love when men stand with their legs spread apart

  • ooooo me too lol

  • Filthy minded pervert!

  • shove it..you must be a breeder or a fish (woman)!

  • OK...I saw Alan Campbell with Glenn and Elaine and met him at the stage door in NYC and the guy is class and hot...but this John B.?...HOT with an H and I love this rendition...the slower tempo from when it is done in the show lets you chew on every word and savor the seduction that Joe felt and died for...almost yummy till you think about floating in the pool of a "has been" starlette with a bullet in your chest.

  • what a cutie! i want to lick him

  • I love John Barrowman and his version of this song is definitely my favorite. After Michael Ball's, but it's not fair to compare people to Michael, because Michael pwns all. ;-)

  • In a word... Excellent!!!!

  • Love JB's version of this. Much as I also like Michael Ball, I can't get past his pronounciation of the word boulevard, it just sounds wrong! JB is so pretty too..yes I'm shallow, I can't help it!

  • sometimes when a note seems out of your range, you can twist the sound a little to hit it. an 'eh' sound is easier to sing that high than an 'ih' sound. that seems to be what he's doing, i don't think he really says it that way. ;)

  • JOhn Barrowman is fantastic at this song. So Hot. he's got a new CD out in November.

  • how fit is john and his hair omg he is fit i love him forever and always

  • I so much prefer Michael Ball's version of this song. One thing I've never liked is when a singer sings what I call hard "Rs" at the end of words. It's so hard on the ears. I much prefer the British pronounciation. Michael has a fantastic voice and personalty!

  • Uhh...this takes place in California, not London. It's strange NOT to have the Rs.

  • I really hope they use John as Joe in the movie version, he'd be an amazing Joe Gillis.

  • Does anyone else think Andrew Lloyd Webber is like kermit the frog??

    Or is it just me.....?

  • Now who would have thought Captain Jack had a background in musical theatre???

  • Anyone who knew John Barrowman before Doctor Who, that who!

  • OMG that is SO SEXY!

    *DROOOOLS*

  • Actually I can`t do anything to stop liking this song. I put it aside for a while and then I listen it again. It all comes together in it. Words and music and his voice and its somehow so deep and good.

  • But I keep wondering here. I like England and its artists. Men are writing and singing wonderful songs there. And they are so hot as well and they are gay. How is this possible? I mean I take Freddie as he was and I admire him and now this fellow here who I started liking is also gay.

  • Wicked maybe because of the song itself and its background.

  • Why wicked? He`s cute and the song is also great.

  • wicked means great!

  • Ok good, sry then.

  • He's a wicked singer. I know what sasseyo is saying, John Barrowman always puts a smile on my face whatever.

  • yeah john!

  • in a werid mood JB always cheers me up xxx

  • god. he's amazing.

  • Yeah he is, what a lovly man. his expressions make it so much more captivating.

  • he's pretty. and damn... what a voice

  • wow

he is an amazing singer, he has such a beautiful(and very sexy)voice

he is the most talented person

    ever!

    period!

    hes gorgeous

    hes an amazing actor

and he is just uber sexy

Scott is a very very lucky man

i wish them the best of happiest years together

  • i agree with everything you just siad

  • What year was this?

  • THere is a recording of this song, the album is called "Anderw Lloyd Webber: The Greatest Songs", it inculdes song from many of ALW' musicals, and this is one of them, and its a 2-disc.

  • One of my favourite films ever, and after hearing Barrowman perform this, one of my favourite musicals too.

  • I worked with John and he was the best Joe in Sunset . This is such a fantastic performance. Thanks,John, this took me back 10 years...and you can still belt it out!!

  • seriously you worked with john
