I love Michael Ball, he is a terrific singer, but Sunset Boulevard is an American musical, John Barrowman nails it, this version is dead on, his tone, his attitude, PERFECT!
@earlady66 Elaine Paige is a fantastic performer, but as Norma Desmond? Glenn Close is far more fitting for that role than any of the previous leads I've encountered... Elaine Paige for me is Grizabella and Evita (in her earlier performances, of course).
more wordy yes but the speed of the songs are very different. think half of what is said in here you need to follow carefully. Cole porter did but a lot of words in his songs but Webber with this song wow...and dont get me started on the wordiness of Sondhiem!
I'm not a native speaker of English and I don't think I quite understand what the guy at the start of the video said. He said, "Although with any luck in future years, we will be looking back on this as his [blank] period..." What's that word in the place of [blank]? Would someone help me, plz?
"Early", in this tense, is reffering to the beginning of his career. It is meant as a joke because Andrew Lloyd Webber has been around for a while and he has written many musicals.
Great performance, actually, i just saw the netherland´s version yesterday, i didn´t understand a word of the lyrics, but the music was great ;-) I love Webber´s works anyway.
I'm happy to hear that you liked it! I can understand why you prefer John's performance. He is an actor , while Tamas is just a singer with a very nice voice. :)
John has an amazing voice but he's so presentational. He gestures absolutely everything he's singing about and the only way he has to emphasize a word is by growling it at you. Don't get me wrong he's a great performer, and a fantastic singer, I just think his performance isn't as honest because of all the hand motions he's doing
Ik vind juist dat de gebaren goed zijn. Ik vind het verschrikkelijk als hij erbij staat ls een zoutzak. Dit vind ik één van de beste versie. Hij mag van mij wel een paar aspecten van Huhg Jackmann overnemen.
I just can't like anyone's version as much as Hugh Jackman's. It's like I understand and am convinced by Hugh's perfomance so well that when John Barrowman and Michael Ball sing it, it just sounds like any other song. I think I'd like this more if I hadn't heard Hugh's version though!!! :)
I'm used to listening to the Alan Campbell version on the CD I have, but his pronunciation of "Boulevard" is very strange. It's probably my second favourite after JB now.
For me, it's all about how they do the 1st bridge: "You think I've sold out..." etc.
Yeah this version is okay. I've listened to Michael Ball's version first. Michael Ball has a tension in his voice that makes me think its fits the period this is supposed to be in (the 40's or 50's). There's a gritty weariness to his voice that John Barrowman doesn't have. But I love John Barrowman and this is a great version.
Let me explain my point of view: Joe Gillis is a cynic, not a showman. This version of the song is the equivalent of Gillis standing up in a crowded room and giving a rousing speech about Hollywood instead of pondering quietly to himself by the side of the pool. He may have been more subdued and realistic in the actual show, but here he is looking to impress the audience with his voice instead of expressing Gillis's emotions. Hence: Lovely voice, but a little showy.
he's very good this is the first time I've seen John Barrowman sing I've only seen him really on "Doctor Who" I think I prefear Alan Campball though with this song on the Los Angels soundtrack but that's only because I listen to that soundtrack all the time Barrowman is still good though
I have admired John for years and he is an excellent musical theatre star. however, he is in serious danger of being over exposed with all his TV appearances. He will be reading the weather next.
Saw him perform this at Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday in the park in Hyde Park yesterday and we were right at the front and he was amazing! SO good, I really felt all the emotions. Amazing. x
Much, much better than when he was doing the original run in the West End. There's a clip on here of he and Betty Buckley (as Norma Desmond) and in it when he sings "Sunset" in "Sunset Boulevard" he does this awful slide down between "Sun" and "set," over-enunciating the "n", that forms the word in a funny way, extends it to three counts instead of two and just sounds so sloppy. This is much improved.
I was also thinking of buying a ticket, but I am Italian, for me it would be kind of a problem. I don't know if there are still ticktes now...Anyway, if you go, please write something about the experience. Thanks. Silvia
Heck Yeah i am ( but forbes you knew that already) IM SOOO EXCITED for ALW's party !!!im not sure what time we'll get there probarbly about lunchtime ?? coz id bet my bottom dollar it will be bussier than the January Sales :D IM SOOOO EXCITED!!!!
Wow this guy is good... rather ironic that a song from Sunset Boulevard called "Tell Me On A Sunday" was used as a sing-off on CBC's "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?" (on which John Barrowmen is a judge!)
OMG. I love John singing this song! Also Night and Day in De-Lovely. I like how he interpreted the song - the stresses in some words like "frenzy" and the lighter pace in "well, I'm a writer". He would be an excellent Joe Gillis in the movie as he connects the camera well.
Some movies really need to be a musical just like Sunset Boulevard, and make this musical a musical movie is just something everyone will love... [if they pick a good Joe]
This is such an emotional and really kl song! sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber and John Barrowman make such a good duo. I mean as, he writes the songs and John sings them.
Sometimes it depends who you see doing it first, I saw him doing this role in the west end YEARS and YEARS ago and he was amazing! To me he is Joe Gillis :-D
OK...I saw Alan Campbell with Glenn and Elaine and met him at the stage door in NYC and the guy is class and hot...but this John B.?...HOT with an H and I love this rendition...the slower tempo from when it is done in the show lets you chew on every word and savor the seduction that Joe felt and died for...almost yummy till you think about floating in the pool of a "has been" starlette with a bullet in your chest.
I love John Barrowman and his version of this song is definitely my favorite. After Michael Ball's, but it's not fair to compare people to Michael, because Michael pwns all. ;-)
Love JB's version of this. Much as I also like Michael Ball, I can't get past his pronounciation of the word boulevard, it just sounds wrong! JB is so pretty too..yes I'm shallow, I can't help it!
sometimes when a note seems out of your range, you can twist the sound a little to hit it. an 'eh' sound is easier to sing that high than an 'ih' sound. that seems to be what he's doing, i don't think he really says it that way. ;)
I so much prefer Michael Ball's version of this song. One thing I've never liked is when a singer sings what I call hard "Rs" at the end of words. It's so hard on the ears. I much prefer the British pronounciation. Michael has a fantastic voice and personalty!
Actually I can`t do anything to stop liking this song. I put it aside for a while and then I listen it again. It all comes together in it. Words and music and his voice and its somehow so deep and good.
But I keep wondering here. I like England and its artists. Men are writing and singing wonderful songs there. And they are so hot as well and they are gay. How is this possible? I mean I take Freddie as he was and I admire him and now this fellow here who I started liking is also gay.
THere is a recording of this song, the album is called "Anderw Lloyd Webber: The Greatest Songs", it inculdes song from many of ALW' musicals, and this is one of them, and its a 2-disc.
I worked with John and he was the best Joe in Sunset . This is such a fantastic performance. Thanks,John, this took me back 10 years...and you can still belt it out!!

Wicked maybe because of the song itself and its background.
