Uh, we won in Iraq. The insurgency had its back broken in 2008 during the Bush "surge" - victory was declared. The nation has a democratically elected government recognized by the UN and will continue to suppress what's left of the insurgency. They will also be an ally in the region from now on.

The insurgency in Iraq has been diminished substantially. My brother returned from Iraq a while back ago and he said that the amount of change was INSANE. Half of the guys he was with hadn't fired their weapons the entire tour and they were in S. Baghdad, it used to be one of the most dangerous places in Iraq and now there's nothing going on. Bottom-line, the goal was to leave behind a fully functional and democratic Iraq capable of defending itself, and that has been done.

There were several reports like that all over Iraq, that's why we were forced to re-claim victory. We have accomplished all of our goals in that country and have begun economic colonization. Our troops will leave, yes, but our diplomats will remain within the country and continue giving aid.

Let's see: US dollar world currency, US military bases in over 176 countries, world super power (at the moment the sole super power), strongest military in the world. Having bases in other countries doesn't constitute an empire since the US got permission from those countries to be there. The USA has 50 states, and does not colonize or expand its territory. Each state has its own legislature, and the US goverment is divided into 3 parts, with leaders elected by the public and presidents limited to serving 4 to 8 years in office. The USA IS NOT AN EMPIRE.

Uh, we won in Iraq. The insurgency had its back broken in 2008 during the Bush "surge" - victory was declared. The nation has a democratically elected government recognized by the UN and will continue to suppress what's left of the insurgency. They will also be an ally in the region from now on.

The insurgency in Iraq has been diminished substantially. My brother returned from Iraq a while back ago and he said that the amount of change was INSANE. Half of the guys he was with hadn't fired their weapons the entire tour and they were in S. Baghdad, it used to be one of the most dangerous places in Iraq and now there's nothing going on. Bottom-line, the goal was to leave behind a fully functional and democratic Iraq capable of defending itself, and that has been done.

What about the American soldiers still dying in other parts of the country, what about the Iraqi civilians still dying? The Iraqi Government can't protect them, and neither can you I'd hate to see what happens once your troops leave. You've only knocked the insurgency down for now, to buy yourself time to makea retreat (staged withdrawl) that looks good.

It's so un-politically correct to claim victory these days that I think we've forgotten what the definition of the word means. We have accomplished all of our goals in that country and have begun economic colonization. Our troops will leave, yes, but our diplomats will remain within the country and continue giving aid.

@Zukouh. 7 oil fields, you only have a partial stake in two of them. If you're purchasing 90% of the oil, that makes you a big buyer. Isn't it better to be a seller than a buyer? Isn't selling another source of power? You buying that oil means you're dependent. Not very powerful at all really. Civilain and soldier deaths might have reduced, but they are still happening over 1,900 civilians in 2009. 27 dead soldiers since 09 the insurgency is still going and no one can win a guerilla war.

For those two years, South Vietnam suffered an oil shortage, a recession, chaos, and a demoralised army they couldn't use alot of. For 10 years, while the US was there, the communists were kept back. After the US retreated and abandoned South Vietnam, the communists gradually took the country, with one victory after another over those two years. Look in the dictionary, I don't think that's what thrive means.
