I was born on Toronto North York and moved here to St Catharines when almost 6 of age. I'm now 60. I don't like how Toronto is becoming so dull with the use of grey bricking and nothing but huge glass windows and glass balconies. Some of the bulidings designes are breath taking grant you; but it is now the main city part of TO is looking like just a giant city of grey doom and gloom. I liked some of those OLD buildings that to me were NOT dull because at least used various colours of brick.
@aswchris I'm not sure what the exact reason is, but in general the condos are booming in Toronto, especially in prime locations in the city and along subway lines (such as the many new and modern ones you can see on Yonge street in the video). Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, "the city of Toronto contains the second largest concentration of high-rise apartment buildings in North America." There are also plenty of old an dull ones in the city, mainly used for renting.
@aswchris I think it has to do with progressive attitudes. The US is very socially conservative and is generally opposed to anything progressive. Toronto, like the majority of Canada, is very liberal. Condos are better for the environment, they're a more efficient method of housing and they take up comparatively less space than those suburban sleeper towns that spring up and kill the land around US cities. I think Toronto is more in tune with its 'greener' mentality.
@aswchris my understanding is heavily mixing residential and commercial zones is important in long term survival. i am led to believe if you have a strictly commercial area where no one lives, it eventually gets taken over by gangs during the night time, and it becomes more or less a no mans land.
that stretch of yonge street from 1:51 to 2:37 was my life for the longest time

Toronto has a huge amount of residential high-rises (a.k.a. commieblocks). Any reason for that? You don't see as much of them in most U.S. cities.
