  • i ended up buying more of these powershot bottles off of ebay. got 23 more for about $22.00. these are not sold up were i live anymore and so by finding them on ebay, i have enough to make 23 more filters.

they are made by Watts and the product number is A-195. they are called nylon hose barb splicer 1/4" x 1/4". got them from lowe's at 0.88 each. grind up the activated carbon into powder and it will filter down to .5 microns. more carbon for the bad bugs to bind to. good luck ya'll

  • i have built two of these filters as described in the vid. trouble is that the nos powershot bottles cannot be located here in the bangor/brewer area of maine where i live. so i am having to find another bottle to do this with.

another bottle that can be used is the redbull energy shot bottles. the caps fit both ends just fine. the only thing is you will have to cement a 20oz or 1l bottle cap to fit other bottles that you will be working with. great small compact field filter.

  • I got the carbon in a pet store in the fish department. I think you should change it every month or so depending on how much water you run through it.

  • @cdrron Great little filter you made! Question: Is there any advantage to boiling then running it through the filter. Or should you filter then boil? (I prefer boiling over chemical treatments)

  • @Masowai Boiling the water is part of the water purification process. Filtering water is running it through some type of filter. You have to do both in order to achieve potable water.

  • where did yu get the activated carbon ?

  • @aznmusica you can either get it at walmart back in the pet section. comes in a 9oz container. or you can go to a pet store. walmart probably would be cheaper.

  • YouTube: "copper water filter" !

  • I agree with klass! Great job! I'll be making one soon!

  • dam thats a great idea. i am so makin one.

  • I used it everyday at work last week. I refilled a water bottle with tap water and filtered the water before making coffee. I think it made my coffee taste better.

Another word on the nipple. I made the half I used shorter by turning it in a pencil sharpener.

Thanks for you interest in it.

  • @cdrron does the carbon need to be changed? might use this in a survival. hiking kit any parts/tutorial would be great! thanks

  • @cdrron does the carbon need to be changed? might use this in a survival. hiking kit

  • @cdrron does the carbon need to be changed? might use this in a survival. hiking kit, how did you get the bottle to have screw openings on both ends? the bottom is open with exposed charcoal?

  • @Gunkization carbon will need to be changed approx every 20-30 gallons to remain on the safe side. will last longer then that, but the more you change the carbon out, the less likely anything will grow in the carbon and make you sick. i have used cotton balls inside at both ends next the the nylon barbs and by doing that, the carbon will remain between the cotton balls and will not get in to your filtered water.

  • The bottle is a 2 oz NOS Powershot drink I bought as a gas station. The cap in the bottom can come most any bottle. I bought the activated carbon and the synthetic fiber material at a pet store. You can use the fiber at both ends to keep the carbon in. I bought the 1/4" nipples and hose at a hardware store. You can get the PVC cement there as well. PVC cement would not hold the cap in place, so I used JB Weld on it.

  • WOW, EXCELLENT idea! Could you give a little more detailed explanation of the materials you used? For example, what is the "synthetic material" you used and where do you get the nipples?
