I was a kid in the seventies, and there were still lingering styles and vibes from the sixties. What a different time it was from today! Total flower power stuff!
Although I'm familiar with Bakshi's movies and a fan of his work, this cartoon was a new discovery for me. How Marvin get's dressed - priceless. Thanks for sharing!
In one morning I've discovered Dayton Allen's early TV comedy work, his work on DEPUTY DAWG and now Ralph Bakshi in a psychedelic cartoon. Ain't YouTube great?
It's strange to see that by the end of the Paramount/Famous era in 1967, Bakshi really got the cartoons up to the times. Nice graphics in the dream sequence, too! Plus, there are flowers on the Paramount mountain!!
I'm not sure what to think of this. On one hand, I'm a huge fan of Ralph Bakshi. On the other hand, I really dislike the pop-art design of cartoons from this era. It's so-so, I guess.
I've been wanting to see this cartoon since I first read about it in Leonard Maltin's Of Mice and Men 27 years ago. Bakshi was the head of Paramount's Famous Studios when this cartoon was released. It's interesting to see how this Famous Studios cartoon is so different from the look, sound and feel of the violent cartoons they produced during the '50s and early '60s.
2:16-2:23 hasn't changed one bit with today's adults.

Huh, I wonder if this inspired Craig McCracken's art style.

@baxterfilms Paramount animation division new they were folding, so they made Ralph head of production for like the last 8 months.

@Methrt3 I jokingly like to say they simply brought him in to mop things up! :-P

Did Bakshi technically kill the Paramount cartoon division since he was the last guy at the head of the board?

This cartoon is almost kind of like another one of Ralph Bakshi's works, "Fritz the Cat," but it's more kid-friendly.

I didn't know that. I thought the significance was the hippie type influence.

Oh! Hello ladies and gentlemen and friends.
An old professor of mine used to tell a very strange proverb.
Yes he did.
But I guess it doesnt hold true today, with all the new stuff thats out, huh?

Fast fact-"Marvin Digs" was the second-to-last Paramount short before "Mouse Trek" (New Year's Eve, 1967).

I love Ralph Bakshi's science-fiction movie "Wizards". It's similair to the 1968
science-fiction movie "Planet of the Apes"
combined with "The Omega Man" and "Star Wars".
