in my opinion, this movie has a great storyline with lots of potential. however, the directing does not allow this potential to show as it is impeided by numerous unecessary moments of awkward silence, and unecessarily drawn out scenes. Also, due to the language barrier and clash between english and japanese, the dialogue seems to be very choppy, with too many long breaks in between, making many scenes awkward to sit through

The film is hardly story orientated. It's an archetypal Yakuza narrative, little else. Where it shines is in its directorial style. Kitano's trademark use of long silences is central to the film, alternating between stoicism and abrupt violence. It adds to the tension created by the unpredictable lead character whose taciturn demeanour makes his sudden aggressiveness all the more shocking. If there was a soundtrack always present it would be disruptive, informing the viewer what to expect.

He also did a film called "Kikujiro" which is pretty amusing, but it's kinda his attempt at a family-friendly movie and it really doesnt work somehow. All his others are stunnin watch them at all costs. I know full versions of "Scene at the Sea" and "Kids Return" have been uploaded onto youtube somewhere. Check em out dude...
