I love the fact that the Japanese mafia (=Yakuza) is the protagonist of this movie even though the end is bad for them (are killed by italian Mafia). It's something like Greek tragedy.Great and so poetic!!!
I think Beat Takeshi has almost single-handedly done to the Yakuza/Japanese Gangster movie genre what Kurosawa did earlier to the Samurai genre - brought it to global attention and international prominence.
I remember when i first saw this movie. At 8 or smth. I was SOOOO traumatised by the door scene. I mean when one guy kills another one by shooting through the little hole in the door.
Seriously traumatising. But aweshum. <3 I also remember the very end when one guy talks about dying willingly *if im not mistaking <3* ANIKI ~~ SO AWESOME ~~
I just saw this movie on HBO, and LOOOVED IT!!! Very different. The long face expression was hilarious, the wry humor kept me going, and its like he doesn't condone to violence yet there's shooting everywhere! THATS AWESOME!
I saw this movie when it first came out and I saw it recently with a different perspective. I thought it was very good when I first saw it. Seeing it recently, I though it was very simple and cheap.
This film is Kitano's best work. It has clarity and purpose which is not typical for the gangster film genre. The depth of emptiness Kitano portrays is his signature. The ritualization of pointless violence is captured by Kitano's blank portrail of a cold blooded killer motivated by a warped code of justice.
really enjoyed this movie. Agree with some of the comments made, I guess at times you could see their was a low-budget and a bit of inexperience. Still think it's a great movie with a great ending.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
in my opinion, this movie has a great storyline with lots of potential. however, the directing does not allow this potential to show as it is impeided by numerous unecessary moments of awkward silence, and unecessarily drawn out scenes. Also, due to the language barrier and clash between english and japanese, the dialogue seems to be very choppy, with too many long breaks in between, making many scenes awkward to sit through

hmm.. i was actually just expressing my opinions with educated reasoning.. u calling me an idiot proves ur an immature little kid in a 32 year old man's body still using "ur mama's so fat" jokes on other kids.. grow the fuck up
The film is hardly story orientated. It's an archetypal Yakuza narrative, little else. Where it shines is in its directorial style. Kitano's trademark use of long silences is central to the film, alternating between stoicism and abrupt violence. It adds to the tension created by the unpredictable lead character whose taciturn demeanour makes his sudden aggressiveness all the more shocking. If there was a soundtrack always present it would be disruptive, informing the viewer what to expect.
i hate takashi kitano. i've seen sonantine and violent cop, and they ar epossible the two worst movies a have ever seen in my life. it's just a bunch of random scenes put together.
this is the best movie of all times, not only best gangster movie, but it tells about friendship and honor and loyalty this movie has inspired me in life very much.
Well, one that comes to mind, while although it's very funny, it's more of a metaphysical type kind of movie...think like "Being John Malkovich"..it's called "Takeshis'"...BRILLIANT film. =]
"Fireworks" (Hana-Bi) was awesome, and "Dolls" was one of his hauntingly best films.
He did a comedy called "Getting Any?" but be warned, it is one of the most bizarre things you're likely to see. He also did a film called "Kikujiro" which is pretty amusing, but it's kinda his attempt at a family-friendly movie and it really doesnt work somehow. All his others are stunnin watch them at all costs. I know full versions of "Scene at the Sea" and "Kids Return" have been uploaded onto youtube somewhere. Check em out dude...
Sonatine and Hana-bi are better but this a good and slightly more accessible Kitano film. I think it was hurt by the fact Kitano experienced a language barrier in America. I still liked it though. Kitano does some crazy directoral stuff. What a nut.
I had just got this movie over the weekend and I loved it, if you like King of New York, Harsh Times, or anything that has to do with mob or gang movie rent or buy this movie its a good ass movie.
no, it's a film about one yakuza guy who is essentially exiled from japan meeting up with his younger brother in america and starting a criminal organization in LA
