I've always been amazed at this movie-I saw it as a kid on TV and thought it was filmed much earlier than 1958. Thanks for posting this-I've been looking for this movie (couldn't remember it's title) for years!
Its even more incredible when you remember that it was made decades before computerized graphics and CGI.My mom took me to see it back in 1961 when it was released in the US.Always one of my favorite movies of all time. It beats the crap out any of todays movies-3D or otherwise. The animation is in a class by itself.A work of art by a master director.
This is a very cool and distinctive movie, the animation is quite a trippy effect! I saw it on the tube when I was about fifteen, and I thought then that it is real weird. It is meant to resemble old engravings, I believe. Glad to stumble onto it again here on Youtube--where you can find just about anything you want to watch.

Search for "Vynález zkázy (The Deadly Invention) Pt.1/6 Karel Zeman 1958" on youtube. It is in original language (czech), but with subtitles and far greater image quality.
@ebf1957 Totally, and the "Tonight, Tonight" video visuals were based mainly on Georges Méliès old silent film from 1902 "Trip to the Moon." I think this film is pulling a lot of their style from Georges Méliès's films. They're really fun to watch even though their silent with really old special effects, but there's something special about the visual style he had. You can see a bunch here on youtube.
I, too, last saw this film in 1958 and have always hoped that it would come on TV or that I could find a copy somewhere. This is truly a fantastic film and I still remember many of the images to this day. Thank you so very much for posting the film as I thought that I'd never see this film again. So many fantastic images including live action and still sets. Quite the genius who created the special effects.
Saw this in a drive-in with my family in 1958 and always remembered the images. Finally tracked down what it was called, and thrilled to find it here.
Thanks youtube3k!! I was about to pay $24 on Amazon then I went to Turner Classics and got it for $17. I did buy a poster for this film at Amazon. When they arrive, I will have a movie viewing at my pub. You're invited! I can't post a link to my site, but do a search on Anaheim Basement Pub and you will see it.
Though I'm a devoted fan of this film. I've seen it enough time to realize it has a few factual flaws. Like the Atlantic ocean not being deeper than a few hundred feet. The sea bottom is always in sight, as the large submarine tows the sailing ship. Divers could never salvage shipwrecks in the real ocean. Unless they were fairly close to land. The Mysti-mation process almost makes this a 3D experience. But more like "forced perspective" in motion.
@youtub3k ...Though it is obviously set in the late 19th. century-the 1880s or later, the Savannah, the ship at the beginning of the film crossed the Atlantic in 1819-a good 60 years before the story takes place.
A tremendous thanks for uploading this movie. My one and only VHS tape is fast becoming unplayable. Someone mentioned having a DVD of it. But I don't know of a retail source. Perhaps it's bootleg. The original untranslated film looks much clearer. Maybe some day I'll dub the english track of over the other.

@Mystefier the truth is, that the visual of this film was inspired by original drawings in Verne's books
