My dad does it and i hope to start with in the end of the year, its been a thing in my family and these guys are right if you do it right nothing bad happens, its only the people who mess up bad things happen, of course im not counting the accidents that happen just the things that really could have been prevented with or without saftey equipment
So much respect for people like you. I always think about the men who put these buildings together when I see these massive works of art. Don't know how ya do it but all of ya deserve a heroes respect for what ya do for America. Prayers to you all.
I've done a lot of high octane stuff. Drag race, street racing, street luge, downhill longboarding (that's the long skateboard downhill at 40-60mph), pretty much every type of speed there is while breaking everything from my legs to my teeth and let me tell you something:
I would NEVER go up on a building like that, these guys have BALLS.
I'm turning 18 later in year, been iron working from age of 13 out in lower mainland, British Columbia, it's fucking sketchy some days but I gotta say I fuckin love the job, don't get the rush of being on top of the world like when your up there standing on a beam with your spuds and sleever bar
THIS is exactly why the military wants young guys......late teens.....you're stupid and immortal!!! The thought of dying doesn't enter your head until it's too late....
That's fucked up. Every man out there should be harnessed up. Greedy developers not spending money on safety. I don't care if it slows up the job. No-one should ever die at work. That is like slavery. What's the rush anyway? It only makes the top dogs more money. Those men are worth more than that.
@Loader2k This is exaggeration, or what they are doing is illegal, I have a friend that is an iron worker and his company requires him to hook up to a line when he is 5 feet above the ground or more.
@Loader2k Most Iron heads don't have to wear fall protection at certain heights. it gets in the way... of safely moving ironically . but most of the time you wear a dog leash .. that's why they don't wear heals on the their boots either
@Loader2k lofl .. this has nothing to do with "greedy developers" the WORKERS dont like being tied up and or harnessed because they feel it slows THEM down. these men are used to the heights and slipping isnt likely when you are aware and cautious and have good rubber soles
@Loader2k bulshit, its not like slavery, you can go work for a harnessed crew and get less pay, this money is hazzard pay, my dad used for work for 5 grand a week doing this, he turned down an offer with a harnessed crew for only 1500 a week (still not too shabby) but he wanted the money and the thrill
@Loader2k America thrives on effeciency. It is not effecient in any way to give them harnesses. The workers obviously know what they are getting into, and they get paid good money for it.
@Loader2k I am sorry, but these men don't want harnesses. It would slow down and complicate their work. Search for the NY Times article "Ironworkers of the Sky". They take pride in their profession. And you cannot argue that the employers don't want to spend money on them, considering they are paid two thousand dollars a week, a very good, very fair salary.
they're being used like dogs to do a dangerous job, because every day the building isn't finished is thousands of dollars more spent for the corporates .
the site manager just comes and says "do it by thenand then, i dont care how"
They're paid 2 grand a week. That's over $100,000 a year. That's so much more than most people make. And watch the video of the guy climbing the 1700 ft broadcast tower. He doesn't use a harness.
@Loader2k The men shown obviously are fine with their job . Yes , I do agree , though . They build buildings instead of safety harnesses , they build highways instead of funding national parks and some of the wildlife that is endangered . People need to realize that everybody is on the same level as them . These iron workers are men just like you , and these animals were here first and they are here for a reason . They need to protect the things that are more important than a faster commute .
@Loader2k It's not the fact that the developers don't care and don't want to pay, it's the fact that the safety gear is incredibly awkward and uncomfortable and makes working very difficult, a lot of the workers choose to not wear it because of that reason. If someone falls and dies, it looks bad to the developers because someone died on their job... 100k a year? Sounds like a good deal to me...
@Loader2k An Australian carpenter earns $2200 per week at ground level, without ever risking their lives. Like I said, these guys are being ripped off. Period.
@CRVZS It is the same in the US. However, there are situations where tying-off is either impossible and/or would actually increase the hazard to the worker (the regs reflect this). The man that you saw walking beams in the vid was more than likely an old-dog ironworker showing off for the cameras. I work in demolition and I always tie off unless doing so is impossible or increases my own danger. Essentially, I do what ironworkers do, only in reverse; instead of putting iron up, I drop it down.
i understand how the "I can do this" attitude helps, but just what the fuck are you supposed to do if a giant gust of wind comes along? holy shit man...
im a union iron worker frome ottawa canada and theyre no way we make 12 gs a week no shut down can make us do that maybe a month and fuck you scabe you dont make 92$ an hour thats if your charging for 2 guys and material and making garbige bins dont count as ironworking thats shop welding
Excellant.. Great vid..,I remember the willies you get in your stomach while walking on girders..it was in a stern of a super tanker,,Never like this though.
Several of you have asked me how you tie off at SIX FEET. I don't know about you, but my F.A.S. (body harness) is equiped with two adjustable lanyards and a "pig tail". The pig tail is about 16" long and used for retractable fall arrest, such as a "yo-yo". The two lanyards are for 100% tie off and can be adjusted to four feet. If the shock absorber does engage, your boots may tap the deck, but a fall from six feet will most likely not create the force required to snap the shock absorber.

@hustleandsnow I have a nephew that works at McD's he don't make that much but he makes 42k a year as a manager. Will get his own store in 4 months his pay wiill go up to 55k a year.
@hustleandsnow dude dont take this the wrong way. i make more than you and i have a huge respect for you and feel you should be makin WAY me than me! it shoulda said "most dangerous jobs" not worst. i swear man i get butterflies just from watchin this shit. STAY SAFE!
Anyone know where I can find these guys? Or ironworkers in NYC that work on dangerous projects? I'm casting for a reality show that is being pitched to a major network. Need these guys or ironworkers like them that lead dangerous lives and also have humor, conflict and drama in their lives. THANKS!
@kiteport Try either Local 40 or Local 361 ironworkers in NYC.These are both the structural ironworker unions in NY. There are quite a few big steel projects going on in the city as well so you shouldn't have no problem finding them.
Anyone know where I can find these guys? Or ironworkers in NYC that work on dangerous projects? I'm casting for a reality show that is being pitched to a major network. Need these guys or ironworkers like them that lead dangerous lives and also have humor, conflict and drama in their lives. THANKS!
@kiteport Ironworkers got drama alright...(well some of them), I've worked with enough to know. It would definitely make a great reality show and probably show up shows like "ax men"
They should get paid more than £2000, i mean look at sports people, musician, actor they get paid millions for doing pretty much nothing, what has world come to?
Fuck Greg Mclelland. "Don't make mistakes and focus". Ask him about when he went in the hole at the San Jose Civic Center doing something stupid and broke his fuckin arm. Not a good spokesman for safety.
I do iron worker for a living some people drink, some smoke shit but nothing will give you the same rush like walking the steel it a tight feeling being up there with all your tools and knowing very few people have the the balls to do what you do currently working for zachry cane island FL unit 4 im from the valluco r.g.v
Not a damned thing wrong with wearing safety gear. Hardhats keep the head from being split upen from a falling tool or bolt and harhesses keep you from being scraped up off the ground if you slip. The real pussys are the bad ass doods who think wearing safety gear is for babies. They need the crybaby sticker on their hardhats, well stuck to their foreheads cause they don't want to wear the hard hat . lol
It's true there are no safety harnesses no nets etc. As a former Iron Worker it takes balls of steel, basically you can't be a pussy or afraid of heights! better join the military or go to school cuz only a few men can do this job!
my father is an ironworker himself but here in my country (greece) we don't build nearly as big as these buildings... projects here are smaller but that doesn't mean his job is easy.... i have worked with him for several years and i know the hardships of such a job... it's mainly the lifting of heavy objects that can strain your back a lot over the years.... plus at the moment cos of the financial problems in greece he is having a hard time coping what with the low prices on projects...

Anyone know where I can find these guys? Or ironworkers in NYC that work on dangerous projects? I'm casting for a reality show that is being pitched to a major network. Need these guys or ironworkers like them that lead dangerous lives and also have humor, conflict and drama in their lives. THANKS!
Please contact: ryder.benjamin@yahoo.com

@kiteport Try either Local 40 or Local 361 ironworkers in NYC.These are both the structural ironworker unions in NY. There are quite a few big steel projects going on in the city as well so you shouldn't have no problem finding them.

@kiteport Ironworkers got drama alright...(well some of them), I've worked with enough to know. It would definitely make a great reality show and probably show up shows like "ax men"

My dad works with iron workers and hes always telling stories about them, pretty good stories at that :D.

Not a damned thing wrong with wearing safety gear. Hardhats keep the head from being split upen from a falling tool or bolt and harhesses keep you from being scraped up off the ground if you slip. The real pussys are the bad ass doods who think wearing safety gear is for babies. They need the crybaby sticker on their hardhats, well stuck to their foreheads cause they don't want to wear the hard hat . lol

what if your shoe lace is undone or u sneeze? You guys have serious balls.
ForDoverUSA 1 year ago
It's true there are no safety harnesses no nets etc. As a former Iron Worker it takes balls of steel, basically you can't be a pussy or afraid of heights! better join the military or go to school cuz only a few men can do this job!

The guy near to the start boasting about his job has a fucking safety harnest on anyway, WTF?

my father is an ironworker himself but here in my country (greece) we don't build nearly as big as these buildings... projects here are smaller but that doesn't mean his job is easy.... i have worked with him for several years and i know the hardships of such a job... it's mainly the lifting of heavy objects that can strain your back a lot over the years.... plus at the moment cos of the financial problems in greece he is having a hard time coping what with the low prices on projects...
