  • Whats the name of the router OS that you are using?

  • @lkfng ClearOS Enterprise Edition.

  • can you hear your server sound from your home theater? how far is it from it?

  • @ASUSproz Can't hear it much in the home theater room, unless it's dead quiet in there. The door next to the rack is the HT door.

  • how did u make that old compaq server into a router, can u plez make a video, cuz it sounds like a very good plan, n i want to do it myself

  • How do your security cameras tie into your DVR? are they IP Cameras, or do they link to that blue box on top of the rack. what is that box?

  • @NightWolfEditing They are regular NTSC color cameras that connect to an 8 port BT878 capture card. The box on top of the rack is an old 8 port KVM switch that I haven't gotten around to using yet.

  • just wondering, how much power do these usually consume?

  • @ASUSproz My particular rack probably uses around 350-400W.

  • Great vid, I have a 24u rack at home. My storage server runs unRaid. I'd be interested in seeing your home theater setup too. So do you have long video and audio cables running up to your home theater room? Any loss of quality on the video signal?

  • @eljtel I'm using a high-end RGBS cable that is 30 feet long. No signal loss that I've noticed.

  • That thing is quite the monster. I couldn't imagine needing that much computer power. My laptop alone is plenty for me.

  • @Trance88 It's basically a big external hard drive and a powerful router that is shared between everyone in the house. I could have made it smaller, but I would have had to buy new equipment. Most of this was just second hand junk :-)

  • @Maxxarcade Thats so cool you can build something like this out of old unwanted or junked parts. I wish I had the technical skill and the resources to build something like this.

  • what does that cost to run annually? it looks like it consumes as much if not more electricity then a home air conditioning unit

  • @fordbroncodave Probably about 500-650 watts depending on what I'm doing. Not quite as much as a window air conditioner :-)

  • I don't know what I'd ever do with that much computer power!

  • @JeffN727 That's what I said to myself before I built it, but now I can't go without it!

  • Show us your home theater room! :)

  • @Orcinus24x5 It's kind of in a dismantled state due to water damage... I'll see if I can get it running sometime next weekend.

  • Were do you have your Server Rack At?

  • @fordfan2007 In my basement.

  • I'd like to see your security camera setup.

What capture card and software are you using?

  • @weasel2htm The DVR card is an 8 input one that I got from Ebay. The software is Zoneminder.

  • HEY MAN HAS ANYONE EVER TOLD YOU, YOU SOUND LIKE STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN!!!! NICE VIDEO

  • Yes I remember those compaq servers. They're easiest to repair.

  • wow.that looks like something outta a 50's collage campus!

  • @vacguy99 Funny you say that, because the rack was originally used for a PA system and central clock at a school.

  • Man I'd hate to have to pay your electricity bill! Is the server rack on the web or is it just for a home/office network?

  • @CoolDudeClem I don't host any pages with it, but I can log in remotely to access my stuff.

  • @CoolDudeClem Electricity bills. What bullshit. That is like convincing everybody that water is scarce.

  • @SlimeTron5000 Yup, electricity bills are BS. Especially when you have to pay them.

  • @JeffN727 Electricity is not scarce.

  • @SlimeTron5000 Not at all, as long as you pay the power company to deliver it to your house.

Unless you are resourceful and can make your own electricity, which I would like to eventually get into someday. I have a cousin who does that.

  • Great video as always. ***** Stars

  • i have 2 of the same compaq dl360 G1's and one has clearos and the other windows server 2003 r2. and were can i buy a rack like that for a decent price?

  • @computerdude556 Racks aren't cheap when bought from suppliers. I got lucky and found mine in a barn sale. Ebay can also turn up some deals if you find one locally.

If you want to mount the DL360 in a generic (non-Compaq) rack, you need the third party rail kit. I could get you the part number if need be.

Does your DL360 have the Coppermine motherboard, or Tualatin? I have a pair of 1.13Ghz Tualatins running in mine.

  • @Maxxarcade i have dual Coppermines 800Mhz 133fsb. and if you have that number i could wright that down for when i do get a rack. i was gonna send u a link to see the pics of my server closet as of now but i cant in the comments, if u want i can message u with the link. lol

  • @computerdude556 I'll get that part number for you tomorrow.

  • @Maxxarcade hey thanks man. ill personal message u the link on my picasa album pics of my server.

  • I've had a few servers over the years but always end up selling them before they are next to worthless. Awesome video.

  • lol noce setup i need to get my server rack up anytime soon,

  • I'm jealous!

  • @batterymaker Eh, it's all old second hand junk. Though it's some good junk :-)

  • I guess anything's possible with a server cabinet. I can't believe you have a home theater system in your server.

  • @megamanfan3 Yep, the projector and speakers are in a separate room. 10 foot 16x9 screen, and Cerwin Vega LS series speakers. Having the equipment outside in the rack keeps the theater room quiet.

  • Do you have a power conditioner? If not, I'd get one.

  • @racerboi3x The UPS's take care of that. They aren't just cheap home units.

  • i have that sony amp got it in early 2000. does yours run very hot?

  • @highvoltage12v Not too bad, but I've always kept it in a well ventilated cabinet.

  • Awesome setup!
