Gene is one of the best! Some girls preferred Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, they were great, but some girls preferred Gene, I'm one of them, he could always make me swoon. He needs to have a story done on him. He is truly unsung. Is he even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, if not, that is a tragedy! The people should be fired over there for not inducting Gene Chandler.
@MusicandDancing4Ever GENE "The Duke" CHANDLER SHOULD HAVE BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME YEARS AGO !!! How he's not in ,( with over 30 chart hits, and a Grammy Hall Of Fame Inductee, singer, songwriter , producer, entrepreneur, and record executive), but one -hit wonder Percy Sledge is, BLOWS MY MIND !!!
I wish black singers of today would give up rap and sing like these 60's black artists. I would give anything if they would sing like this. Such class and nothing of that trashy stuff we have today.
@cbjrcher I feel you on that. Even though I'm from the East Coast, that Chicago soul is a beast! The fact that Curtis Mayfield was a major architect of it made me like it the most. Much Respect!!!
I hear like songs like this and their appeal is that they always speak (or sing) to the deep pain love can bring. What now... what else can go wrong. Nothing like real R&B and soul to tell that story.
Gene Chandler was of Chicago music giants although Curtis Mayfield wroter most of Gene music including this song. Jerry Butler Major Lances , Curtis most of their songs
I'm a stepper in Chi-town. You know this hit the spot. I was at a fund raiser a few years back and Gene was there. Yeah, he took a picture with me. As my sister would say, you guys are the bomb-diggity dang-dong. Thanx.
This is a great song, and Gene, like so many other artists from that period, never got the credit he/they deserve. We got cheated out of songs like this back then and were force-feed music they (producers and record company excecutives) wanted us to hear and buy. Too bad. But thanks to you guys for posting.
What a phenominal song. I heard this back in 1993 for the first time and set out to find the 45. Surprisingly it took me almost 10 years to find this record. I do not understand how this record didn't hit #1.
"what now" was the first Gene Chandler record i was exposed to. my mom & dad had the 45. i was probably 7 or 8 years old when i first heard it in the 70's. still one of the finest songs i've ever heard!
Gene Chandler had a helluva voice. He should be on top as one of the best soul artists alongside Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Jackie and Wilson. Gene is my absolute favorite and boy could he sing ballads. He sung some of the best soul ballads, Just Be True, What Now, God Bless Our Love, Man's Temptation, Here Comes The Tears, To Be A Lover, and songs such as these and others always pleases.
i guess he probably has lost his beatiful voice. He is about 75 or so! it really was agreat odies show. Chaka khan and Peobo bryson were also on the show!
@williamg2552 I'm sorry that you disagree! The song that he lipsynched was "Rainbow". He stayed on stage while singing it. He walked up and down the isle when singing some of the other songs!. I love hims so much. He was the man back in the day with the top hat, the cane and the cape!!
The black girl behind Gene, is singing along with him, she know her music. The white kids looking lost.

went to number 40 on the pop charts in 1965...I'm not sure about how well it did on the R&B charts, but I'll say it hit the top 10.

the Impressions are the background singers
featured here.
