not only great for its price, but also great in terms of delivering a number of items and features that no other camera in any price range have!
i own this camera, plus the K-7 (still an impressive piece indeed!) as well as the K-x (White) and love them all! hail on thee Pentax to offer the thrifty photographers invaluable jewels at reasonably low costs since ancient times ...
I Just love Pentax for NOT having other semi-pro/pro dslrs in their line up, because when canikon realeses new prosumer camera they need to step back a little bit, just because they need to sell d300's and 7d's, while Pentax is free to add any features they want!
Great review , it is like DigitalRevTV but much more serious. I like what Pentax did and planning to buy Pentax K-r because it is in my budget . Well , Pentax is a great brand to begin with . At least I can try out other brand other than Canon and Nikon which most of my friends recommended me to buy but I prefer not to because Nikon and Canon are too common to begin with . This review really help me learning about Pentax . I personally a Sony and Fujifilm fan but Pentax is good .
I've had this for about a year now, and it's fantastic. My biggest problem with it (and about my only problem) is no manual settings for video. I don't understand why as the camera is extremely capable, why limit it in this regard?
Another problem for some people is that the k-7 films at 25p this is a bad frame rate for NTSC people but it's good for PAL users. Funny the older Pentax had 30p and 24p.
I just bought this camera as an upgrade to my K-x (also an excellent DSLR). Pentax doesn't really seem to garner as much respect in the US as it does in other countries - a lot of people here think that Canon and Nikon are the best and everything else is garbage. I even had one guy at a photo shop try to tell me that Pentax is going out of business, which from what I can gather, isn't even remotely true.
Great review,, hey I currently own the 5D II but also really like Pentax and am eying the K-5, now I know the 5D II is FF but how do you think the K-5 does against it in image quality? because from the specs that I read they are pretty much on par and the 5D II only has like 0.8 F-Stop better high ISO, now from what I see the K-5 is also a better camera than the 7D, thanks.
As of march 2011 we're just getting our first look at the a700's replacement and then only to find out its got an evf. It's an 'slt' camera which I personally DO NOT WANT.
I am jumping ship with the next body I buy because although I love my a700 I hate where sony is going. I think Pentax looks good right now.
@WhatDigitalCamera Ive read on sonyalpharumours that sony has announced that all new sonys will have an evf and be slt cameras. I think there is even a video on youtube somewhere.
Shame really, why not have both? Because I really feel that the slt sales largeley don't come out of the dslr market but rather a new market segment.
@WhatDigitalCamera As someone who sells cameras for a living... Sony continually disappoints me. Though I love their point and shoot models I stay away from their DSLRs. I would recommend the K-5 over sony's cameras any day of the week.
@Drinapropriatetouch Way to assume...The reason I got my job is because of the simple fact that I love photography an hence know a lot about it. I don't know of many photography stores that are run by people who don't love photography. I was simply stating my opinion on Sony. I, unlike some people, was not insulting you or anyone else for that matter. Don't get me wrong, Sony has wonderful cameras and I would never try and sway someone who supports them. It's just an opinion.
@Drinapropriatetouch I suppose I should have specified by saying that Sony disappoints me when looking over them with a fine comb or whatever. Besides, I own a K-5 so I may be a little bias. Anywho, I am not trying to argue with you, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that is just fine with me. I just don't appreciate when people assume things about others. We all know what that does :P Happy shooting sir
@oceanistoosmall With a77 it seems the new evf is better than the a35. Eliminating most of the bad points.
To say the pentax k5 is a bad choice is well, just ignorant but I still haven't jumped ship yet.
As for Oled evfs beating most ovfs, I'm not after a pentamirror, I'll be after a high end pentaprism, possibly full frame. It becomes a matter of taste and I still enjoy the evf more. So if sony has no good ovf sony doesn't have me as a customer.
@Drinapropriatetouch hmmm its that you take no time in trying to understand! i meant that choosing k5 because a77 comes with an OLED EVF is indeed a bad choice! before making any assumption try using the A77 EVF before you resort to any judgements! And im not ignorant of k5, i rate this camera higher than d7000! But a77 beats every camera except for its low light performance! a77 is not meant for low light shooters!
But the light loss is only very small and the comparison tests done between the A77 & Nex 7 which has no mirror have shown only a negligible loss of image quality. So I’m not really disappointed in the IQ the A77 has, I’d just like an OVF version if I could have one if thats what you're getting at.
The IQ loss is an increase in noise that shouldn't exist, because the camera compensates for the light loss [up to 30% I believe] by increasing the ISO. This isn't particularly problematic but it's a problem that shouldn't exist, it should either have a OVF or no mirror at all.
I don't like to complain, but one of the comments was dead on in that the writer expressed some anger over pentax dishing out cameras that are so incomplete or just near copies of previous models. This is true in some regard. I was pissed about the k20D and the k7 because my k10D had better image quality, and that is what matters most. Still, the k5 is very impressive. It is what the two previous models should have been, but inexcusably were not.
@rimofheaven The K-5 is the biggest jump from Pentax for some time (ignoring the recent medium format 645D release - also impressive). They've optimised the K-5's sensor to perform really, really well. Between this, the D7000 (same sensor) and Canon 60D (different sensor), technical testing (not necessarily real world shots) would suggest that the Pentax comes out on top.
@gecmartins Hmm, there are various ways to answer that I s'pose. Depth of field difference. Additional resolution you could succeed in capturing at the same quality. Depends how important those are though. Plus it's quite possible that when the next full-frame camera (from whichever manufacturer) is released that it'll another step forward in image quality. As far as APS-C sensors go, Pentax got this Sony sensor optimised , very well indeed. Plus it's a lot less cost-wise than a full-frame model
I am amazed about how many people comment on video. Listen to the review. It does 1080p video. Keep in mind it is first a still camera. Most of the review is about that capability. It's a good review of the main function of the camera, being able to take great photos. Excellent high ISO performance, good fps, IQ is good and it has solid weather tight construction.
@dbkfrogkaty1 It's more that other manufacturers have got the video side of things much more right (yet still not perfect). Pentax is the weakest in this area. However, if you couldn't care less about video then the K-5 is an example of one of the best APS-C cameras available today. I'd rather own it than the Canon 60D any day of the week (unless I was a videographer, but I'm not).
@dbkfrogkaty1 Thing is, if the K-5 had an even better video mode as well as all those other great things then it may have caused even more of a storm in a slightly different market sector.
@WhatDigitalCamera I suppose so. Video in DSLR's is becoming the new norm it would seem so I would think Pentax will address the K-5's shortcomings next time around. I still want one though, it would be perfect for me.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hate it how Pentax brings out new DSLR's that are so similar to it's last. It's like they have no idea what to do so they just add a couple of features to the K7 and then they call it the K5. They did the same with the Pentax K100D witch became the K200D. I would rather wait 5 years for a completely new camera that has new inventive ideas. Little step ups like the k5 are just a waste of money.
i just wish they work on the fking movies mode.. i'm currently k20d user with a good lens collection and I want to jump gun to 5dmark 2 b/c of the movies I seen. I don't see myself buying k-5.. may be k-3 :D?
@johnyeros If video's that important to you then consider just how far ahead Canon already is. And, actually, how rapidly Sony may catch up too.
