  • Why does everyone look too much like their stereotype

  • With that hair, he looks like a sax playing samurai. Didn't I see that somewhere in a Kurosawa film? No, not Seven Samurai, the other movie.

  • Mr Birkin—

Carefully work-out what you need to tell the audience before you start recording. Don't stick your fingers in your mouth as if we can feel it, because we can't, and your doing it doesn't communicate anything except your lack of proper preparation.

  • socialsax com is a new saxophone social community. you can browse and chat on forum, download backing tracks for free, add video and music. not only that you can make new friends there!

  • thanks for info

  • I have a similar sax from Kenny g exact same as mark six

  • Scaryllama22 ur sick lmfao lol

  • loser

  • The lip should NOT be a cushion between your teeth and the reed. Use the lip without support of teeth and buiöld strenght instead. Sound will be very improved

  • @nolfie3522 What part of "Dave Birkin has been a sought after saxophonist in the New England area for over thirty years." haven't you understood?

  • Lucky bastard's got a Mark VI... doesn't he... -_-

  • at least he's good...

  • What's with the Nuclear Missile for a MPC ? Excessive Vibrato also. Not meaning to be mean just well a proper real vintage tenor sound is the way to go & you are not going to get near it with that kind of set up. Still thank you for putting up helpful video .. Give us more Bergonzi , Gary Cambel etc . Would like to see him go through some of his book " Gary Cambel's Expansions. Still working through that monster. Very cool !

    Best

    Robert.

  • LOL sooo much weaker than a clarinet embouchure. xD

  • @Clarinet4Life1 i like Dquidward XDDD!!!

  • Oh my god, this shit is classic!

  • would be kinda the same as a clarinet o.0 changing to tenor sax so might as well look up some stuff

  • Very helpful videos. Thanks

  • No way I'm taking advice from a 60 year old with a ponytail

  • @HDibbles Who is apparently a lot better than you at saxophone.

  • Lol! I didn't mean to offend you creepy saxophone guy I didn't realize you had a YouTube Account

  • lol I feel so stupid. I can't even put a freaking reed in my saxophone

  • @kimscvp101 Haha, don't feel bad, you'll learn. First you want to put your mouthpiece on the neck. Next you want to slide your ligature (sp?) over the mouthpiece. Then bring the ligature up, and slide the reed in. You want the tip of the reed to be a bout a hairline under the tip of the mouthpiece. Then apply the neck to the instrument and you're ready to go! :)

  • @wullawoogie Thank you so much! It turns out i was doing it right, but the ligature was rusty and wouldn't loosen enough to put over the mouthpiece. But I will be sure to keep this as a reminder if I forget! (This is my first year playing the sax at school)

  • if you look some notes, you can find some and request froms songs lists in there, in facebook site -saxophone notes-

  • thank you for posting this video, and trying to spread the knowledge of playing an instrument. might I add a couple things tho, like using the fattest part of your lip as the cushion. And what he says about your lips being relaxed but firm at the same time is true. It's more a seal, and relaxed as much as possible so that the reed can vibrate.

  • 0:25 Nuff said.

  • his saxophone is really old, he can't be good.

  • Comment removed

  • @fighterj5 No, what's that?

  • @rosski47 wtf? dude, get off youtube and go buy a 50 year old sax.

They are better than today's material.

  • Even a better Quality would be a good thing^^

  • FAIL

  • hey are you wearing the goodspeed sax harness?cause I have one and have no Idea how to put it on. my instructor said ti crosses in your back

  • does anyone want to trade sax notes, i have nothings gona change my love for your (kaori kobayashi) version, and baker street.

  • taking a sax lesson from expertvillage is like taking a sobriety lesson from lindsay lohan

  • why dont you get a haircut you shit

  • @ monkeymarine291

Cool, I quess I 'm not an odd ball after all lol.

    Happy playing bro !

  • hay i just started having problems with the clarity of my saxophone and my teacher said it was my vibrato. can somebody please explain how to "fix" the vibrato. i play tenor

  • @McVoomddoom all vibrato is, is you bending the sound. I recomend being sure to keep your embouchure, and jaw still. Don't do this by tensing up, just relax and keep them still.

  • @ Dommylaws

I have a fat sound, and a big round tone. It seems to work for me. Right now I am going through a few things, but I will eventualy upload some sax vids of my own.

  • I never heard anything like this, your playing is the proof.

  • @ BoredChick

I put my bottom teeth on the reed itself, however the bottom lip is rolled up to cover the teeth. That way the teeth is not directly touching the reed. Yet most sax players put their upper teeth directly on the mouthpiece, which is where I differ. My upper lip is rolled over my teeth when I play..

  • so you play like a bassoon then?

how does that sound for you?

  • I play the oboe at an intermidiate level. Im gutted that I can't play much jazz so I'm thinking of switching to tenor sax. Does it help that I have experience with the oboe or is the embouchure and the fingering too different?

  • @Trickme10 I've been playing oboe for around a year, and I decided to try the alto sax to play jazz also. The fingerings are so similar between the two (i believe this is the same for tenor, too) that it made playing sax much easier! :) And the embouchure is different, but not a difficult transition! It just feels very strange at first :P

  • As for me, I use my upper lip as a buffer between the mouthpiece and my teeth. This is not due to my searching for a better sound, but rather due to my teeth being way too sensistive. In any event, it worked for me, and I have been able to form a big tone. My band instructor told me that many European sax players over seas use the same technique that I do. I tried the teeth pads, and they did not work.. But the lip does just fine for me.

U R right no pinching the reed. Max air flow always !!!

  • Where do you put your bottom teeth then? Or do you cushion on both sides?

  • he's a good player, but his embouchure is totally wrong. your lips should be between the reed and your teeth!

  • @pcmaster3495 Not on both ends, if that's what you are talking about. Only on the bottom as he shows.

  • how can we rid the world of expert village?

  • Good question ryclea, can anyone answer that for us?

  • Theres no one answer to one tone. There are many variables...mouthpiece, reed, how u use your lips, instrument type..etc.etc..

  • I agree- it's probably the most sensitive instrument ever....

  • expert village sucks ^^

  • @TheSaxPlayerChris ok, this is the part where you say, "instead you beginners should watch _________'s videos, because they are better" >.>

  • What is the difference in the embouchure between a smooth, Stan Getz, type sound and a raspier, Lee Allen sound or is it more about the mouthpiece?

  • If you're playing a versatile, middle of the road setup, you can go back and forth by taking in more mouthpiece and moving your jaw slightly forward to get the harsher sound (maybe hum a little to get a growl), or playing on the tip for a softer sound. Rolling the lip in a little bit to get a subtone works, too. For "normal" playing, I tend to be very neutral, like the guy in this video.

  • I think i saw this guy looking through my bedroom window the other day..... making the face he's making at 0:27

  • lol xD

  • XD That would scare the crap out of me!!!

  • Haha!

  • Lool, thars sum funny cheet. HaHa

  • :D:D omg

  • @Scaryllama22 man!!!, i love to play SEXophone!!!

  • @Scaryllama22 Thanks for sharing your fantasies..now go out there and get that much needed help!

  • @Scaryllama22 lol men your comment's too funny

  • I thought sax ambuchure was diffrent from clarinet, that lower lip doesn't roll over lower teeth??

  • @valvetrom In the aspect of the lower lip, thats correct for both the sax and clarinet. With the Clarinet, the real difference in embouchure is more of the positioning of your tongue and that you have to have a more closed in mouth cavity, to have faster more concentrated air. With that being said, Clarinet embouchure also has you take i less mouth piece than that of a Tenor Sax.

  • lol a guy in my band class cant do it XDDD

  • Is that a C++ Mouthpiece?

  • is that a mark vi? i want one of those, or a cannonball with the dark finish

  • i liked him until he beat Rhianna

  • nice bite

  • hahaha

  • you're wrong, he's telling us the right technique for basic playing

yes, there is some variation for classical saxophone, but otherwise he's pretty much right

    very vague, but right

  • agree

  • what the hell with the lip hahahaha

  • missa superman no heer

  • I find this more sexually pleasing then informative

  • nice samurai bun! You're probably an awesome player, but not everyone can teach man

  • im from puerto rico and they asked me for a second instrument and i chose the tenor sax i totally love it and im always practicing but i have a problem

my problem its that always im trying to reach the high notes from the G and up all the notes break and come out crankie and really low and when im trying to reach the lower notes the B and Bb always lagg at it too so can u give me a cool tip and if u know where i can find easy jazz or blues saxophone sheets like bluesette i would apreciate it

  • im not sure if this would help but try to put it deeper in mouth and use thicker reed i think 3 would be ok

  • what strength reed are you using?

  • im a begginer alto sax player, ive played flute for 3 years & now im switching alto sax. when i play, my bottom teeth cut my bottom lips.. is that supposed to happen? its like im biting my lips. can you help me? thanks.

  • To: annalovesyou86

Your best bet is to get a teacher, even if its just at the local music store or your band teacher. They can help you with any problems your having.

To answer your question, you shouldn't be biting...much. As long as its not painful, you should be ok. But I'm no expert.

  • happens to me, too. Make sure you ain't biting down super hard. Just enough to where you still get a good sound. I find that keeping the mouth corners in is a little more important than biting down. Like the vid says, make sure to support the reed but not to pinch it and this should help alleviate that problem...but you might still get it simply from practicing a lot. If your lip gets sore from it then let it heal for a few days before getting back to practice.

  • Yeah i had the same problem and im fixing it as of now you gotta change your embouchure...Your bottom lip is curled too far in and when you play, the pressure from playing causes your teeth to sink in your bottom lip

  • it happens to me when i play alot like when im practising altissimo and really tightning my embouchure..

  • Try not to tighten for altissimo if you can help it. Its mostly in the oral cavity....

  • Embouchure = Mouthpiece in french...

  • should i go from tromdone to sax

  • should i go from trombone to sax? advice

  • depends... you could try it ... but your lips may be more difficult on the mouthpiece

  • trombone = money

  • I got a problem about my tenor sax! Okay when I play without any fingerings, then it's Bb, which is good, but then as soon as I finger something the note is always down by one note... A is G, D is C... What is this problem! I checked if there's something wrong. But I see nothing!

  • To: LinkBulletBill

This is difficult to explain, so it is best to ask adivice from your band teacher or private instructer if you have either of those. First off, if you blow a note without pressing ANY keys whatsoever, that is actually a B on Tenor Sax, not a Bb. As to the reason why all your notes seem to register down, is because tenor sax is a Bb instrument. That means if you and a piano were both to play a C, the piano would be pitched higher than you. Hard to explain without showing, sorry

  • I went to the store, and my sax was bended a bit... But it got fixed...

  • i just started tenor for my schools jazz band it is a big switch from bassoon

  • i hate it wen i have bite marks in my lip

  • The tenor doesn't seem big enough to require the use of a Saxophone Brace. I play Bari and I am quite fine with a strap.

  • haaaaaaahahaha.... this video is funny.

  • I play a B flat clarinet, and im starting with the tenor sax in august!

Will it be hard to adjust myself from instrument to instrument?

  • i play clarinet too. i just got a sax it will take some time to get use to, but already knowing how to play clarinet helps alot

  • I know how to play a double-reed instrument and I'm thinking of learning the tenor sax. Any advice?

  • If you play any double reed and are starting Sax, it will be ten times easier then when you started a double reed.

  • Hi , I have a question....is it hard to play saxophone as a beginner ?

I think it sounds so cool when ppl on youtube plays...and I think I want to get started.......if you know something....please answer me ...thx and have a good day.

  • its not that hard to get started, its hard to be really good at it

  • Not really..you just need to practice!

  • what pepsi... says.

When you get your first tone out of an sax, it's really cool, and from then on it's not so hard any more..

    good luck

  • I love playing my saxaphone.!its so easy!.XD. ive been play for 9 years

  • anyone got any tips on how to bend notes on alto sax? thanks,

  • Yes, all you have to do is lower your jaw while playing any note. For an easy note, use a high A. It takes practice, but it really isnt that hard. Good Luck

  • makes sense, least he can explain

  • Finally, a sax player from Expert Village that knows how to play.

  • thanks expert village

  • nice tone

  • modmusik...some people aspire to be better than a mere, dime a dozen, run of the mill, common, simple guitar player.

  • modmusik u are very naivy!!!

  • thats loser talk modmusik...

  • nice but i dont think u need a harness for a tenor sax, just use a regular neotech neckstrap, you only really need a harness for the bari sax.

  • this is really helpful. i am swiyching from clarinet for jazz band and have no idea how to hold it...

  • I went from clarinet to tenor sax really recently and my hand hurts like hell when I play it...

  • THANK YOU

  • mehhhh perty basic info.

    But well noted

  • i had to learn the clarinet before playing the sax it is much easier if you learn to play the clarinet first then the sax

  • wat about learning the sax first then the clarinet??

  • Nice hairdo bro. This cat looks like an extra who was on the cutting room floor of a Steven "Fatso" Seagal movie. Let's hear you play something, Hack!

  • i love my tenor sax

    (: <3

  • this guy is a joke

  • Unfortunate for me, I hate my sound and my private leson teacher, for which all Wind Ensemble musicians are required to have, is a complete jackass to every musician at my school literally. Never again will I EVER agree to play the Tenor Sax or voluteer to play it.

  • Honestly, it really doesn't matter at all, I also started playing in middle school and I found that by high school I was on average far better than most of my fellow band mates. It's all about approach more than anything else. Which is what good embousuchure control is all about. Honestly a robot could play a saxophone technically perfect, just look it up; but music is much more than just playing the right notes. When you're young you don't have as good of a concept of this.

  • i just got a tenor sax and im still perfecting my embouchure. its pretty hard!

  • Last year I went from 3 years of Clarinet to Tenor. The transition was really smooth so maybe you should learn Clarinet first.

  • i play tenor and its not as hard as it looks

i got my low notes in a snap it was awesome

  • I have a crappy school band tenor but i could play easily too!

  • Me too

  • I just rented a tenor sax to try it out for a month or two and it's not that bad because I have a very musical background, but getting in the right ovtave constantly evades me, particularly when I play a low C.

It always cracks and sounds about an octave higher than it should. Can anybody suggest something I might be doing wrong?

  • Well some things that sax players tend to do wrong when playing low notes is still having a tense embouchure just as if they were playing higher ones. You really need to practice letting your bottom lip be relaxed, especially playing the low C. You have to let your lip be loose and flow with the reed. There should be hardly any tense on your bottom lip when playing low notes.

  • Another thing that I like to try and do is if I know I am going to play low notes, I tend to put more of the mouthpiece into my mouth to allow maximum buzzing of the reed...

So if you focus on those few things: - loose bottom lip

& - tending to take in more of the mouthpiece when playing low notes

    You should get some result.

Don't worry if you don't get it the first few times because hitting those low notes cause a common problem for most people!

    Hope this description helps!

  • Well put. I find that instead of tounging and having the note burst from the horn, try starting the note with just air. No tongue. Crescendo and decrescendo. Its always good to practice your subtones too!

  • The last thing you want to do is loosen your embouchure and take in more mouthpiece.

What you want to do is expand the back or tour mouth where your throat connect to the bottom of your jaw.

Almost like a fish when their gills expand.

  • saxophone samurai!

  • I'm in 5th grade band and i play tenor saxaphone

  • i feel like i'm the only kid who started playing band instruments in middle school :( wait.. where do you live?

  • Please.... I want my 1:39 back

  • Is the saxophone difficult. I know it sounds good, but all those positions makes me think it needs hrd work. I play bass instruments, and i don't know much about these kind of instruments.

  • the guy i likes play tenor =P

  • its my second

  • nice pitch man

  • i play this!!! its my third and a half year playing the tenor!! :D

  • this is my 2nd and a half year i like it more than alto

  • does anybody know wats good ..like when ur playing the sax and you get tired or like ur mouth gets dry and u cant blow anymore ..it feels like u ran out of air and ur throat weakens up ..does anybody know wats good for that???? plz like something u can eat or drink or something??

  • lol well...that's your limit, you just have to practice to get better. =]

  • /\

    || either that or just stop playing!

  • Is it bad if saliva comes out of my sax's keys?

  • nah that happens 2 me all the time and I'm a great player been playin 4 6 yrs. It just happens after playing 4 a while since the sax doesn't have a spit valve.

  • They should have invented it WITH a spit valave.

  • Hm, I just have one question about tenor.

I need someones advice. I've been playing for about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years, and I've always been using a size 3 reed. And i just got new braces, and its been about a month - main point is, I have a hard time playing notes above the staff.

Any suggestions from people who had the same problem? :D

  • Wow i have the same problem size 3 reed, and i just got braces and when i play it makes a squeaky noise espiacally on the G note.

  • i belive they sell like plastic strips or somthing at like cvs or at a music store taht u can put on your upper lip so that your braces dont cut into your lip making it easyier to play

  • Know the name of it?

  • mouthpiece patches.

  • the high g right? LMAO same but i'm takign my braces off...is there a diff between braces and no braces?
