43 years old and still relate.... when i was at the head of the ride out at the isle of white scooter rally on my sportique with lights n mirrors this was the tune going thru my head,,,,, one of those magical times you get once in a lifetime,,,
Even 36+ years after first hearing it - this track and album still sends a tingle down the spine - continues to stand the test of time tells you everything you need to know about British working class kids growing up over the last 45 years
this album is coming out on a deluxe version . how fab . what an album ! i have played it to death for years . it's also my mum's fave album of all time ..
I'm a seventeen year old girl and I 'get' it. The music that Pete wrote is understandable, whether you're black or white, young or old, male or female. Superficially it's indeed about the mods and the rockers, the post war era. Underneath it, and I'm sure Pete intended it that way, just like with 'Tommy', it's a universal story that every new generation can relate to. Trouble with humanity, trying so hard to fit in, parents screwing up, trying to make sense of the world, losing your love...
To get The Who, especially Quadrophenia, 100%, I think you have to be English. He sums up an era so well. Suburban London, circa 1965. I know how it feels but... I can't explain.
I don't agree that you must be English. I am NOT English, but, in Quadrophenia, The Who so amazingly well reflected my feelings, at my time (1970s) and in my own culture, although it is (still) indeed so far away from the suburban London (even today). I still love them and I am almost 50 :-). I can't explain it either :-).
its me, arriving home at 7 on a sunday morning after a weekend on speed and my mums got a roast on the go...made me feel sick...my dad got out of bed and did'nt realise i'd been gone all weekend ? after 18 months on 20 blues every saturday night i was down to around 7 stones, not eating or drinking, how the fuck did i survive ?
If you listen closely, in the background, just before Pete goes into the second verse of this song, someone says, "You're on!" I always liked that, as I saw it as having a secondary meaning, alluding to the fights between the Mods and the Rockers. I've not heard it on remastered issues of Quadrophenia.
@Teflon65 I always wondered what i could hear it's at 1.26 i thought i could hear someone say 'grant'.I love this album check out the winning video for the 5.15 competition it's very good.Saw the who perform this album last year for the tct it was amazing
@kfag101 A young mod called Jimmy, he's quadrophenic (like schizophrenic but 4 personalities). He starts taking pills and heads down to Brighton with other mods for a confrontation with the rockers. When he gets back his mum and dad throw him out. I won't spoil the ending for you.. Definitely head out and buy the album and dvd.
I've said it before, wish I could go back long enough to link this into my teenage mind as a soundtrack. Pete indeed is another manic artist, I thank him for being forthright, engaging and above all honest with the world about those feelings and thought we all would deny to save face in those young days.
@TheWhoForEverAndEver Spot on my friend. As i have said before on other Who vids, this band literally got me through high school! We Who fans got to stick together!!! Cheers!!!!
Stellar. This song distills everything I, and imagine a majority of teens, lived through regardless of our fashion/music allegiances. That yearning to belong, be loved, be accepted and the impulse to defiance is so strong, I can taste it.
The raw energy and passion of this band and music was a giant outlet for me in high school. The movie came along at the right time, I was 17 and was feeling many of the struggles as Jimmy. I could relate. Now I'm 47 and this album and movie still stirs me with it's energy and emotion as it did 30 years ago. Surprise, I'm in therapy......but not crazy.
The girl in the 'Stiped Jacket' "Jane" should have been me. (But I did not want to cut my hair...Fool that I was!) If you, or Maxine, or Julie see this ...Please contact me. My friends from Elliott. x Bernie x
@TDJCCSGC Got to be honest I thought Tommy was crap!! I love Quadrophenia, I was 5 when I first saw it I'm 31 now and all I do is wish I was part of the 60's mod generation, what we got today is complete and utter rubbish!
Nobody would call The Barber of Seville a concept album. This is not Sgt. Peppers or Dark Side Of The Moon. It's an opera & just like any opera, Quadrophenia takes a small story & elevates it far beyond its historical significance. It's a modern epic masterpiece that transcends the rock music genre. Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story is cheesy by comparison.
Its a rock album and nothing to do with the Mod movement! Why do idiots keep thinking that because of the lyrics and the concept of the album that its Mod? The who only made one album which any genuine mod would listen to and that was their first (My Generation). The rest is just self indulgent rock rubbish! Remember! The Who where a band formed into Mods! The Small Faces where mods who formed a band!
@mertonparka I completely see where your coming from in terms of music, however, this album means so much to so many "Mods" because it can some up their lives in just one sitting. Then again, I guess the concept of this album can apply to pretty much any "fashion group" just change a few of the lyrics and it could quite easily be written for rockers...
@mod69 are you Mad? Quadrophenia is a Rock concept album and nothing to do with the mod movement! Never ceases to amaze me the idiots who think that because of the theme and lyrics of this album that its Mod!
@mod69 HI im a mod and 14 and that guy who is saying its not knod is a dume shit the who is modand so is quadrophenia cant wate intill im 16 coz i can get my 1st scooter need to pick up one of my new suits to day going to get some pie and mash if im nere a shop
@Mods130 Hi thanks for the comment. Its quite obivous what Quadro is about..right of passage etc but to say it has nothing to do with Mod could only come from a idiot.
Best of luck starting out on you're Mod career...stay cool
Excellent dressed right for a beach fight, wow does that bring back memories of the late 70s early 80s, what a track from probably the best band to ever come out of the UK.
my fried egg makes me sick first thing in the morning.
that is a really good line. you can really physically imagine what it's like to be jimmy. not only is he crazy (times 4), but he can't even enjoy a good meal when he wants!
a Beatle fan from way back..Still when I first heard "cut my hair"...I was drawn in..seemed to be just how I'd felt most of my life. Even now when I hear the words..."my fried egg makes me sick first thing in the morning, I'm taken back there, right to the pit of my gut. Pete stands right up there with Dylan pouring out from their experiences...sharing their pain and also their Joy.
An amazing song from the greatest album ever recorded. Sometimes I get so totally entranced by the bass lines Entwistle is playing that I have to listen to it again to hear the song as a whole. Brilliant stuff!!!
im 18 and i went to see quadrophenia at the theatre and thought it was amazing i wear the fish tail parkas pressed black trousers foxton shoes shirt tie target tshirt reefer jackets zoot suits and i just whished i was a teenager when all this was coming out it would have been great to have a vespa aswell we are the mods we are the mods we are we are we are the mods
