  • I'll never forget being in kindergarten with this kid who had a gameboy advance. I was so jealous and I always wanted one, then for christmas I got a gameboy advance SP and I was like "WHAT NOW BITCH?!"

  • You remind me of AVGN except that you don't play bad games all the time.

  • @DreamingReal3 Oh I play bad games from time to time, I just laugh instead of cursing ;)

  • I think that wii is a big joke compaired to NES then. N64 is better than wii is.

  • Nintendo are such fucking cock suckers with their handhelds.

  • @DeathAdder83 shut up!

  • you should make a Virtual Boy vid.

  • dude i love to watch ur vids keep it up

  • That NES GBA SP skin looks great, it reminds me of my limited edition NES Classics GBA SP which released with the NES Classics line of GBA games. :)

I love the gameboy systems, i have 3 variations myself (The old Gray brick, Pokemon gameboy color and that NES GBA SP).

  • @wingedpaner00 The DS Lite is the better choice. It has better screens and fits in your pocket better. But if you want bigger screens and are not planing on taking your DS with you on the road you could get a DSi XL.

  • @kainkusanagi thank your for replying, i thought i had deleted that post. i actually went ahead and bought the ds lite a few minutes after that post cause it was sell for $100 new at amazon. apparently nintendo is getting rid the ds lites on shelves. u should put up a vid on your fav ds games, anyway thank you, u inspired me to take the plunge!

  • @wingedpaner00 Hope you enjoy it, there are tons of great games. Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros, and both Zelda games are all good places to start if you enjoy classic Nintendo gameplay. Have fun.

  • Kain, how did you get your custom Famicom paint job, I'm trying to do something similiar, alsoif you use an something to light the gba screen from the inside, can you put the original screen back on?-Thanks

  • @dbzfanattack1 I did the paint job myself using paint for plastics. I have a lot of experience painting, but its not a difficult job, just make sure to take it all apart and wipe the parts with rubbing alcohol. It's hard to find the afterburner kit, but you might have luck on ebay. If you add lighting to the screen, you can always remove it and put the original back on.

  • The gameboy is FUCKING BAD ASS!The quality is bad,but the games are awsome.

  • IM GONNA GET A MOTHER 3 GB MICRO!!!!

  • gba owns!

  • Hey Kain, do you get any dust under your gba sp screen? just wanted to know. i've been reading the forums and a lot of people had this problem (i have dust, too). just wanted to hear your thoughts.

  • @rageofthemike I haven't noticed any in mine, but I don't carry it around in my pocket.

  • @rageofthemike:

hey, i have dust under mine too!

it really sucks and makes it feel cheap and unworthy of the money i spend on it when it was new.

i have the old, frontlight model (AGS-001).

still had a great time with it though.

  • Oh, i almost forgot about the cover. Wouln't want to forget that because the screen would be less damaged cause of it. I love the ds, but I stll miss the game boy days just as much as the n64 days

  • I thought the SP was perfect. At first, I had no intrest to buy it. I saw the shape of it. I thought it was fake at first because I thought it didn't look game boy advanceish, but when I learned that it was indeed a game boy advance, and it has a back light and it can charge, and saw everyone with it, I had to get it

  • i have a yellow play it out loud gameboy

  • thank you for making this video1 i'm a nintendo fan btw. mind if i ask a question? i bought a gameboy micro about 6 months ago. for some strange reason little spots appeared on the r and l buttons, and on those spots the paint is wearing off, and they're constantly increasing in size. i know it's a petty reason, but seeing those spots annoys me everytime. should i paint over the spots, risking damage to my unit or leave them as they are? hope you can reply.. thanks a lot!

  • @rageofthemike I wouldn't paint it with spray paint without taking it apart to only paint the without accidentally painting what you don't want getting sprayed.

However, you might want to consider brush on enamel. Something like enamel model paint or finger nail enamel. They both come in just about any color and you wouldn't have to take it apart if you just carefully brush it on the spot that is rubbing off.

Any paint you use may wear off eventually, so don't spend too much time or money.

  • @kainkusanagi thanks! btw kudos on the custom gba paint job you got there. :D

  • nice have a sp color original advance and a light

unfortuniatly the screen on the original is broke but still plays

    bopin to own every model

  • how does a tutorial for unboxing a gameboy micro have more views that THIS?! btw great video.

  • @Elijahbabyluigifan lol, maybe it's a super interesting unboxing. Personally I don't get the whole unboxing thing, especially for retro stuff. I kind of get unboxing videos for brand new things like the day a new gadget releases. The strangest of all unboxing videos is someone who bought an old video game system one bay and they do an "unboxing" of the fedex box full of packing pellets with no original box. I just don't get the point of video taping that or uploading it to the internet.

  • Well i got a GBA SP some time ago..but I don't have an AC adapter for it...got it only for the Castlevania Double pack that came with it(I'm a big fan of Castlevania)...but I wanna get an AC adapter cuz the DS bacwards compatibility sucks balls...games don't play in full aspect ratio and the graphics looks awufull...colors look like a bad emulation program made by some nerdy student that nothing to do...so the GBA still is one of the best handhelds..I mean it's more portable than the DS

  • @sonicblast19 You should check at your local Salvation Army or other goodwill type stores. They often throw the GBA AC adapters in with all the random AC adapters for phones and junk. They usually price them super cheap because they don't know what they are for. You might have to rummage through a bin of AC Adapters, but you could snag one for less than a dollar.

  • @kainkusanagi Well I got one for 10 dollars..cuz the gameboy never made it to Romania..the GBA's that are sold on the local "ebay" called okazii are from outside..to be honest the only console that were here in the 90's till 2005 when the 360 came out were Famiclones and PS2...my Godfather had a PS1 brought from outside.I actuelly got a PS2 Xbox and Xbox 360 along with GBA DS Lite and Dsi in less than 3 months...BTW on the DSi you can try emulating GBC and GB games using a cheap flashcard 6$ R4i

  • @sonicblast19 Cool, the internet makes the world smaller and smaller.

  • @kainkusanagi Yeah...I am interested in getting at least all the models of the Gameboy..at least the main ones..I need GBC and GB....just for collection purposes...but if there is a console that I cannot find..that's the Sega Dreamcast..I heard the dreamcast has no piracy proection..you can download an play burned games on it.,.is that true?..is that available for Saturn too?

  • @sonicblast19 Dreamcast ISO can be downloaded and burned for play on Mil-CD compatible Dreamcast.

  • @kainkusanagi One last question...did Nintendo specified the full hardware specs of the 3DS./.I heard rumors about a chip made in 2006 which low on power consumption but powerfull enough for nice gra[phics..now I am curious about the RAM and Procesor...Do you know them?

  • @sonicblast19 Other than the GPU, which is said to be a Pica200, I think its all rumor at this point. The company that makes the chip says the it can provide 15.3 million polygons a second, 800 million pixels a second, and can perform alpha blending, full-scene antialiasing, and more. Nintendo has yet to reveal the CPU or any of the other chips in the 3DS.

  • @kainkusanagi Well I hope it'll be a hell opf a device..to outshine the PSP and the Wii at graphics at least

  • If you have a flash cart (ex. EZ-Flash IV), you can get an emulator called goomba that plays gameboy games on a micro!

  • @ScReWaTtAcKeD Cool

  • Comment removed

  • i love the gameboy and im 12

  • but now the gameboy name is almost gone because the new DSi series has no gamebot slot :(

  • @8supernits i said gamebot i meant gameboy

  • @8supernits It's a sad end to a a name so important in video game history, but the Gameboy had a great run.

  • @kainkusanagi

I suspect we'll see a "Virtual Console" for GameBoy Games on the DSi / 3DS.

  • @kainkusanagi many pepel have proby talled you this but the game boy is stel going on because of the 3ds and the e shop

  • @RocketJoeAdams I'm glad younger games can play classics, but unless the handheld is called Gameboy and it plays the original cartridges it's not a true Gameboy.

  • @kainkusanagi i understand but when will you make new vids ps your vids are awesome

  • I like use the SNES retroport on the Gameboy player for the old SNES feel considering it works better than the Gamecube controller and the Ascii pad has turbo, one drawback select is mapped to Z and the GBP has select mapped to Y but it not a problem since most GB game didn't use select that much plus a NES controller can be used for old GB games with the NES retroport.

  • great vid

  • Me to!!

  • i want the micro for fun

  • do you know why the micro cant play legacy games

  • Maybe the hardware needed to play legacy would be too big to fit in the tiny handheld. That or they just wanted you to be GBA games instead of playing the classics you already have.

  • can the GBA SP play the twin color zelda games using the passwords

  • Yes it can.

  • i remember my first GB was the GBPocket XD i never got the color one, but then my parents bought me the GBA, then i got the ga,ecube w/GBPlayer.. then the SP, the Micro and a few months ago i got my DS

thanks for your awesome vids x3

  • Thanks and your very welcome. Skipping the GB Color isn't that big of a deal since the GBA can play the same games.

  • to be honest the single handheld that keeps the memory of retro consoles..is the dingoo..im thinking of purchasing one too..yeah its true that emulates it..but now in 2009 where can you still find gameboiy games to buy..except ebay and stuff like that..i mean official storwes with new compnents?

  • Damn DSi put an end to the gameboy line =(....for now

  • yup i dont play mine often kuz the shoulda buttons dont work for shits.

  • I have missed so much of the Game Boy history ._.

The very first game boy I got was the Pocket version 1995 or something.. After that, my parents never bought ANYTHING new that had to do with playing.

  • Actually that's smart. Used stuff costs a lot less. The only difference is how long you wait.

  • Umm, it was from that day till now, when I'm old enough to buy stuff by myself.

I was jelious how all my other friends had new game consoles.

The only good thing from then is that we still have our SNES :P

Oh and btw.. I would like to thank you for the awesome videos you've made. :P

    Intresting to hear the history.

  • i loved the gameboy color. i have 2! REMEMBER THOSE WORM LIGHTS THEY HAD?

i used to sneak it into my room and when everyone thought i was asleep i hit under the covers and used the worm light to play gold version. :D u should make an episode about the lights avalible for the gameboys. WORM LIGHT!!!

  • my GBA was used sooo much that it fell apart and i had to buy a new casing for the gameboy's innards

  • i have one thing to say gamboy rullez

  • Yea, i have an SP too x)

  • all the gameboys i own is gb color gb advance and gb sp.

  • I remember the GameBoy Player, I never got a GBA until I got the Gameboy Player.

As someone like me who wants to save money on batteries I usually put myself from buying a handheld system unless there was a add-on to a console that allowed me to play Gameboy games on TV.

Also you forgot to mention that in Pokemon Stadium and Stadium 2, there was a GameBoy controller link to be able to play the original Pokemon Games on TV via the Stadiums GB Tower..

  • I don't really consider that a part of the Gameboy line because it doesn't play the rest of the Gameboy library. If it had than I would have definitely included it. I still don't know why Nintendo limited it to Pokemon only, they could have easily sold it as the N64 Gameboy/Color player.

  • A very enjoyable and well made video of the Game Boy History, which i am certain is a piece of our personal history as well(for many of us).

Looking at this made me realy play my old first gen. spinagegreen screen original GameBoy, one of the Artifacts of my youth i still possess. I haven't powerd this sucker up for over half a decade! Tryed it 10 minutes ago..and SHOCK...it doesn't work anymore! No pim-pimmm starting sound! Have to say, i am a bit depressed about that..like an ole friend died.

  • Sorry to hear that, did you check to see if leaky batteries corroded the electrical leads or if the games need cleaning? Worth checking out.

  • i was so pissed when i bought the gba, and like a year later they came out with the sp. i naturally couldnt affor it, plus the back battery end got lost so i tape the batteries in... i need an sp

  • Damn... I wasted so much time with pokemon emerald on the 1st GBA x_x

  • I have that flood light on my gba

  • i played pac man too for about 20 minutes i played more super mario bros deluxe and pokemon

  • sweet gba!

  • Very infomative video. I have an original Gameboy. Don't have the games for it anymore. Enjoyed years of playing Pac-Man,Batman,TMNT, and Metroid on the GB.

  • Thanks. Never had the Gameboy Pac-Man, I'll have to see if I can find a copy.

  • I have one, but I dont think I can Part with it!

its nothing special, but still a good time waster...

  • if you want to play gameboy color and original gameboy games on the gameboy micro without modding it theres a c through blue gameshark for the gba put it in ur micro and put in a gbc or gb game and with a lil time itll work thats what i do

  • Cool, thanks for the tip!

  • I love my gameboy (the Grey old one) even tho i hate pokemon i still play pokemon pinball (cause its pinball)

  • Can you play Game Boy Advance games on the Wii? I know the Game Boy Player won't work since it lack the attachment port of the GameCube but I heard that Datel had an accessory thingy that makes it work. I forgot what's it called.

  • I don't know, I've never heard of Datel. I'll have to look into it.

  • Now I remember, it's called the Advance Game Port, it is an accessory that attach to one of the GameCube's control port. It could only play GBA games and lack multiplayer link support. Thank you kainkusanagi for your time. Your videos are very enjoyable. Keep up the good work.

  • I love it when people call accessories thingies. Very descriptive word.

  • gba has the same graphic prossecor as 3DO

  • my girlfriends gameboy color does not work, and i wanted to know why, it turns on, but it does not want to play any games

  • Try cleaning the system or at least the games.

  • i cleaned the hell out of the game and the inside of the gameboy, but nothing, i spent like 4 hours cleaning it and turning it on, then turning it off and cleaning it some more, i know the games work cuz i have a gba she wants to throw it away, and im a pack rat so i kept it

  • Well, there isn't really anything I can do for you. It could be anything from a leaky capacitor to a faulty chip. Both would be difficult to diagnose and only capacitors would be worth replacing. The only other advice I can give you is to search the internet for Gameboy fixes and see if you have a common problem with a common fix. Keep in mind thought that some things can't be fixed without working parts from another system.

    Good luck.

  • thanks ill do that, i just don't want to throw it away lol, the gamer inside doesn't want to throw any systems or games out even if they dont work

  • all the gba gAMES THAT WERE REMakes of the snes ones were really watered dovvn and sukkd ass

  • they now came out with the gameboy:Nentendo DSI

  • ya but thats not in the gameboy line, its in the ds line

  • Do you know of a place that sells GBM faceplates?

  • I bought mine directly from Nintendo's website but I'm sure you can find them on ebay.

  • I'm sooooo pissed! Every time I got a new gameboy, from the original to the SP, I would disect the one before it, ultimately ending up throwing out all the games I got fot that gameboy.

  • hey great video, i have a question for you, what do you think about the battery sistem on the sp, i mean is ion or something, those things run out of life and u got to buy a new one...in some years theyll stop manufacturing those...in the other hand doble aa batteries will be with us for more time i guess..i would be nice to have a GB advance with light screen and doble aa batteries and no ion. . once again excelent work

  • That's a good question. Right now you can still buy cheap replacement as well as long life replacement batteries, just search on amazon. If the day ever comes that you can't buy replacement batteries you cans till use it while plugged in and when that day comes I'll probably make a tutorial on how to make your own AA or AAA external adapter.

  • they made a gameboy player for the n64 you know its a see through blue

  • Nintendo never did. Wat you're talking about is an after market unlicensed accessory.

  • i knew it was third party i didnt say it was first party

  • I still own the original Game Boy Advace.

Not to be confused with the SP version, It still works and I still play from time to time.

I also still play the SP version which I take along with my DS light and DSI even though its primitive. For battery saving. Ahh the memorys. Word of advice for anybody that wants a DS or Sony PSP that cannot afford it, get the GameBoySP.

Its not a DS or PSP but it still has great games!

  • I recall another Gameboy thing that was for the N64 controller. However, you could only play Pokemon Games on it, and it only worked through Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2.

If you ask me, it was a HUGE missed opportunity to limit it like that.

  • Your right. I think Nintendo probably just wanted a way to transfer Pokemon into Stadium and then added the ability to play the games as a second thought. There should have been a N64 cartridge made to let you play all GB games with it. A missed opportunity indeed.

  • It's also a missed opportunity in that Nintendo could've added a whole slew of extra stuff. Imagine what Ocarina of Time would've been like if given extra stuff from a Link's Awakening save file. Or Donkey Land to Donkey Kong 64.

In my opinion, Nintendo has had alot of missed opportunities since the beginnings of the N64.

  • the transfer pack could be used with Perfect Dark along with the Game Boy Colour version of Perfect Dark to unlock features

  • Actally there does exist one (Maybe more) cartridge that lets you play GB games on the N64 but it was only third party (It wasn't licensed as it required a N64 game to be inserted as well ro get past the lock out chip and from what I heard. It dosen't play the GB sounds. Instead it loop one song over and over.

  • u like gameboy huh

  • the first console i bought was the gba

  • i have literally 5 gameboy advance sp's

one of them is the mark 2 NES design

2 cobalt blue ones and a rare new york giants model

  • Very nice video. I just got an Advance SP and I love it. Great little unit.

  • Gunpie Yokoi!

    LOL

  • I absolutely LOVE the Gameboy Player, I just bought a brand new black Gamecube+Gameboy Player still in the box for just 45 bucks!

  • Game Boy Advance SP is the best in the Game Boy name (DS lite don't count since it doesn't have Game Boy in it's name even do it was great).

  • Just to say I am really big fan of your videos this is one of my favorite ones.

I was wondering you showed you GBA with a custom paint job you did you, i was wondering.

What sort of paint did you use to customize you GBA?

    Would really love to know.

  • Thanks. The pain I used was Rustoleum for Plastic. There are other spray paints for plastic, but that's the one I found at the store.

  • Gameboy is discontiued this year as the new DSI won't have gameboy, ha ha ha

  • XD gunpie yokoi nicely said XD gun pie XD

  • I got my GBA-SP back in 2004 and finally retired my old Game Gear. I still pull out the old GG sometimes, it's a grate system.

Anyway, the GBA is an awesome system. I'm tempted to go and hunt down an SP model 2 for the back lit screen. I remember when it first came out I was "about time". The games were grate and I'll still be adding more to my collection. Though I'll probably be playing them on my DS these days.

  • Worth mentioning I think is the fact that Nintendo is all but killing the Gameboy name with the release of the DSi, which will be the first Nintendo handheld not to play any GB games of any kind. My wish is that the memory card slot allows for downloads of GB games, but so far not many games are available... I hesitate to even called what they have for download on DSi, "games".

  • reminds me that i still need to buy an sp i got all the other gameboys besides that one i think u shoulda shown the wonderswan they were cool as well

  • Two of my Game Boy Micro faceplates are signed by Reggie Fies Aime

  • Awesome. He's kind of a goofy guy, but he seems nice and he's entertaining on stage when he announces new Nintendo products.

  • Yeah. He also signed my copy of "Blue Ocean Strategy", he said I was the only one to come to him with that book to sign and was very amused..

  • MAYBE you should've covered the Super Gameboy 2. It was basically a Super Gameboy but with a link cable slot afaik. I never had one so I don't know for sure though.

I'm starting to collect some old-school videogame systems again (back in the day I sold my systems and games when I wanted to buy a new system. And I only start now because well... I just found a job... I couldn't afford it before) and I'll SO buy at least 4 Gameboy systems. The original Brick, a Pocket or Light, an SP and a micro.

  • I don't have a Super Gameboy 2, they are crazy rare because they were only sold as a mail order item in the US. It's probably easier to buy a Japanese version, but than region lock out becomes a problem.

  • Yeah... I hate this region shit. It especially sucks for european gamers (like I am) because back in the day games were often slower than their US and JP counterparts due to the 50/60 hz difference.

I'll have to buy some converters and/or a US TV for the collection I'm starting because there are many games that never came out in Europe or are just better in the US.

And that will make me buy some consoles more than once. And/or I'll have to (let someone) mod these consoles for NTSC and PAL use.

  • dude your amazing

  • One correction:

The SP Mk. II had a second difference: not only was it backlit (and higher quality), but it had 3 levels of brightness, where the original SP had only 2: on and off.

    And one addition:

Didn't the N64 have a Game Boy peripheral that allowed you to play Game Boy (and Game Boy Color) games on the system?

Personally, I enjoy my Famicom GameBoy Micro, which came with a small carrying sack to keep my faceplate (which I only have one of) unscratched and pristine.

  • You're right about the SP Mk 2, but the N64 device you're talking about was just to transfer your Pokemon from the Gameboy games into the N64 Pokemon Stadium.

  • I loved my gameboy so much I not only refered to my SP as the gameboy but I refer to my DS as the gameboy

  • I used the flood light too, i liked the advanced with the light better than the SP though.

  • I have the SP in Metallic Red ......with Spiderman stickers on it but I still play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on it, and Tetris and for some odd reason my grandpa thinks its a cell phone.

  • HAHA! Stupid old peoples.... xD

  • I had a colour when i was still a youngster and played the living hell out of zelda seasons and pokemon... i think silver.

  • Rainbow Road?

  • this episode was special because my first system was a GBA when i was 7 and it started my love for video games

  • me too.The GBA Was my first system when i was 7 And started my love for Gaming

  • I really enjoyed both reviews, though I was a tad bit disappointed you didn't cover the second GBA SP revision. In my opinion, the new screen is by and far the best version out there (even compared with the Micro). It's my portable of choice. Other then that, great job. Keep up the good work!

  • I agree, the second GBA SP is the best. But it looks the same on the outside so I just mentioned it and explained it's superior screen.

  • Ah, fair enough. Touche my friend. :-)

  • Not at all, I just always explain why I do things. That way I can separate intentional actions from unintentional/mistakes.

  • As far as I know SP stands form "Special".

BTW, everyone assumes that DS stands for Dual Screen, and by default it might as well, but it originally stood for "Developer's System."

  • Thanks for answering my question, keep up the good work!

  • Question: What does the "SP" stand for? I know the DS stands for Duel Screen but I am clueless to what "SP" means.

Another great episode, and I have to say, that skin you put on your SP is awesome.

  • Haha man this video brings back so many memmories :D i remember getting one black and white gameboy for my birthday playing flash, the thing, metroid :D and many more... ach i miss the old days

  • When I was little I got my parents to buy me a teal Game Boy Color and later I got them to get me a silver Game Boy Advance SP so I sold my Game Boy Color because I was still able to play the original Game Boy and the Game Boy Color games on my SP. Now lately, I have purchased a Nintendo DS Lite and to my dismay it cannot play Game Boy or Game Boy Color games so I have kept my SP just for that.

  • exact same with me. only i didnt own a gbc just a game boy pocket

  • I'm very impressed by how you review your games and tells the history of the game. Very well done 5/5

  • I totally agree with you about the gameboy advance sp being the gameboy to get if you only buy 1 gameboy.

  • Your 2-Bit Gaming series is of very high quality, say hello to another new subscriber!

I never liked the monochrome systems and the games my friends let me try were quite poor so my first own Game Boy was the GBC. Now my handheld team consists of the DS and SP, a perfect combo for new and old games which I have dozens of. I had the Micro for a little while but it was disappointing with its awkward controls, weak audio and GBA-only cartridge hole.

  • i remember my first gameboy color when was 6

then i begged my parents to get me an SP for £100 on it's release

    i have a micro now

  • If it was backwards compatible it would be nearly perfect.

  • the ds is not part of the game boy family.

  • good video

and the paintjob of that gba looks awesome

  • It sucks that the DS isn't fully backwards compatible with older GameBoy games. Let's hope Nintendo will make the next iteration of the DS completely backwards compatible.

  • I hope they bring back the Gameboy in some way, maybe something like a Gameboy DS.

  • I was also a bit disappointed with the name change, you can't just change Gameboy!

  • ahhhh yes, the gameboy advance. My first video game console(technically not a console)

    I got it when I was 4.

  • nice duude

  • I am subscribing you rule! excellent vid'

  • I would like to know how you did that paint job on your Gameboy Advance.

  • I took it apart, removed the stickers, prepared the plastic with paint thinner, and painted it with paint made for plastic.

  • thank you for giving a shout out to my homey the sp, lot of good times there holms but no one respects the system since the ds. i hate the micro

  • ah man all i ever really played on my gameboy was pokemon and wario land...
