Even if the Metroid series didn't sell well as a whole, it just seems the victim of bad circumstances and bad timing, because otherwise the thing would've sold incredibly; Metroid Prime 1 proves that. Still, the vast majority of gamers and many non-gamers a like could still look at a picture of Mario, Zelda and Samus and still recognize them right off the bat. Samus definitely has her place (a BIG place really) in popular culture. WE LOVE SAMUS!!
Metroids only real problem is that it is a game for hardcore mature gamers that is owned by a company that historically wants a kid friendly image.
with WiiU it seems they r trying to get that crowd of hardcore gamers when you see the titles that they are bringing, so it would be a good idea to make another MP type game to make use of the consoles HD and to attract hardcore gamers. Were still talking about metroid because of the quality of the games, not because of nintendos marketing.

Half of this history is false. Everyone knew Hunters was coming to the DS from the start (a demo came with the console itself origonally) and dread was a rumoured sequel to that game.

I don't really approve of the false history that this show propagates.
Nintendo needs to give Metroid one more chance on the Wii U, if they give Metroid to the right hands, the series will become the smashing hit it deserves to be

@Diegercvb ah.. it does take some getting used to i suppose, but overall i think its the superior control type for that style of gaming. a game like Metroid Prime, which is a first person adventure game, really benefits from it as you can really look around alot more and it pulls you into the game knowing that your right arm is samus' right arm, so where you point is where it points. but thats just how i look at it.
I'm a long time metroid game and I own all but the two DS games. It's too bad that Other M didn't do well, IMO it only had one or two flaws, but they they were in the worst places(for this series) Samuas was no longer the hard edged hero, but now was too inmature. (thumbs down?!?!? who does that?), I keep wondering when she would break out the cell phone and start texting to her "girlfriends" about Justin Beaber (not Justin Baily). If you loved Other M, your not a true Metroid fan...No true Metroid fan could ever overlook what Team Ninja did to Samus in Other M. People who never played any previous games in the franchise can overlook such details, not so for gamers who've been playing since Prime or Super. Metroid games just don't go below 9.0, Other M did. And while the Metroid series has never been a huge blockbuster, sales of Other M are discraceful. Other M also split the fanbase...95% of fans HATE Other M, 5% love it.

The only difference in authorizing your weapons and finding your weapons is a cutscene I mean come on It does NOT change any part of the gameplay just the story. I think corruption was the darkest in the series. Samus is forced to kill her enslaved comrades who she also has to watch getting absorbed, while also dealing with her own corruption at the same time. Just because a game features darkness as a theme doesn't mean it's the most dark. Fusion also had a very dark concept and Metroid II is all out genocide. I think Echoes is actually one of the least dark games among them.
god metroid prime was amazing i just remember first entering the world and when i was walking through a lab and a bunch of cloaked space pirates ambushed me and i had to use my weapons and gadgets to get out most memorable moment for me

The Voice Acting for Metroid Other M wasn't terrible to me. Compared to bad dubbed animes on Cartoon Network such as Bakugan and Beyblade, it's more normal than terrible. The same goes for the story a little. I thought it was pretty good especially knowing Samus' background (that's not as wimpy as people say it is) and how much of a caring dick that Adam can be lol.
It has been publicly announced that there will be a new Metroid game for the Wii U, so all fans can breath easy, while Halo-loving-Metroid-Hating people, can be annoyed as all hell.

Looking back it seems the Metroid series biggest obstacle to success has been Nintendo itself. The decision to put Team Ninja in charge of the latest entry goes to show the people in charge just don't get Metroid. In a way, this isn't surprising. It could be said Metroid has more western styling than any other Nintendo franchise. The game itself was born out of reverence for one of the biggest western sci-fi films of all time. The solution seems obvious, put development back in western hands.
@memewaryr It seems the Japanese don't really get the series(except the expert vision of Miyamoto, unsurpisingly)... The Retro made games were astoundingly good, but Nintendo still didn't take note that there was still more demand for similar games...
I wished they would do a MP4, but I don't think it would be the same with the people that left Retro. Playing Other M now, and I have to say it does suck very hard compared to all the other masterpieces like Super Metroid and the Prime Trilogy. Still, it's ok and good if you need to waste some time. But haven't finished it, so it might be slightly better.. I don't know, I'm just disappointed. :(
It seems that because of Metroid, Retro became a company who made great games for mascots who hadn't seen a game for them in awhile (like Donkey Kong)
Personally, I think Nintendo needs to focus on evolving its Zelda franchise in a more story-driven direction. Those Twilight Princess cutscenes (specifically dark Link running toward the tri-force) is the single best thing to happen to the series since the N64 days.

Just because a character is portrayed with sex appeal doesn't make her objectified. It's when that's her only feature that issues crop up. Samus can be both attractive and badass at the same time-- and that's the whole point!
I actually really liked Other M. Ignoring the story and Samus' horrible voice, the gameplay was excellent. It felt like a perfect middle ground between old and new, keeping the fast-paced action of the 2D games while expanding it into 3D.

If you loved Other M, your not a true Metroid fan...No true Metroid fan could ever overlook what Team Ninja did to Samus in Other M. People who never played any previous games in the franchise can overlook such details, not so for gamers who've been playing since Prime or Super. Metroid games just don't go below 9.0, Other M did. And while the Metroid series has never been a huge blockbuster, sales of Other M are discraceful. Other M also split the fanbase...95% of fans HATE Other M, 5% love it.

Not only did they at least try something new (unlike zelda which is about the SAME every entry) but it was a good game....not up to standerds with other metroids, but I bet if nintendo didnt make it a metroid game ( and replaced the familar characters) then this would have been a high rated game SO STOP COMPARING IT. IT IS A GOOD GAME BY ITS SELF (oh a by the way I have every metroid besides metroid 2 and the 2 ds games).

Whoever liked Metroid being highly narrative, restricting on your abilities until some dick authorizes them, and having to think to heal yourself is an idiot. Something smells fishy when every goal you set out to complete when making a game fails.

@nintendoluigi About the authorizing of weapons EITHER WAY you would have still gotten your power-up/ items. The only difference in authorizing your weapons and finding your weapons is a cutscene I mean come on It does NOT change any part of the gameplay just the story. About the healing yes that was the DUMBEST MOVE I HAVE EVER SEEN A VIDEO GAME DO! and with narratives they tried something different, it doesnt work, so they will fix it next time simple as that. (I actually liked the narratives)

I always thought it was because of the since of exploration (and rewarding for going off the beaten path), finding Items that is NECESSARY to continue and for some the since of Isolation (which is kind of true in other M since you have NO CONTACT (as in interatction) with other people (besides the beginning) and in fact one of them is trying to KILL you.) SO WHY is people complaining so much about the game because of the story.

When are people going to stop blaming Team Ninja for Metroid Other M's story and writing, Team Ninja was only did everything that Yoshai Sakamoto told them to do, Yoshai Sakamoto wrote the story and was in charge of the potrail of Samus, it was also his idea not to incorperate the wii nunchuck, when are you people going to grow up and lay the blame where it really belongs.

I think corruption was the darkest in the series. Samus is forced to kill her enslaved comrades who she also has to watch getting absorbed, while also dealing with her own corruption at the same time. Just because a game features darkness as a theme doesn't mean it's the most dark. Fusion also had a very dark concept and Metroid II is all out genocide. I think Echoes is actually one of the least dark games among them.

The Voice Acting for Metroid Other M wasn't terrible to me. Compared to bad dubbed animes on Cartoon Network such as Bakugan and Beyblade, it's more normal than terrible. The same goes for the story a little. I thought it was pretty good especially knowing Samus' background (that's not as wimpy as people say it is) and how much of a caring dick that Adam can be lol.

Looking back it seems the Metroid series biggest obstacle to success has been Nintendo itself. The decision to put Team Ninja in charge of the latest entry goes to show the people in charge just don't get Metroid. In a way, this isn't surprising. It could be said Metroid has more western styling than any other Nintendo franchise. The game itself was born out of reverence for one of the biggest western sci-fi films of all time. The solution seems obvious, put development back in western hands.

I wished they would do a MP4, but I don't think it would be the same with the people that left Retro. Playing Other M now, and I have to say it does suck very hard compared to all the other masterpieces like Super Metroid and the Prime Trilogy. Still, it's ok and good if you need to waste some time. But haven't finished it, so it might be slightly better.. I don't know, I'm just disappointed. :(

Personally, I think Nintendo needs to focus on evolving its Zelda franchise in a more story-driven direction. Those Twilight Princess cutscenes (specifically dark Link running toward the tri-force) is the single best thing to happen to the series since the N64 days.

I actually really liked Other M. Ignoring the story and Samus' horrible voice, the gameplay was excellent. It felt like a perfect middle ground between old and new, keeping the fast-paced action of the 2D games while expanding it into 3D.

@BDtetra Hm, imagen a open galaxy where you can fly freely to different planets and taking on bounty missions, along with an epic main story with the space pirates. Exploration an isolaton on missions would be very high, combat, bosses, and you desided on what to do and when to do it. I would love to see that.
