lil wayne used to be an underground rapper though... on the other hand... most famous rappers have been in a way.

There was a time when gangsta rap was underground and happy go lucky rap was mainstream. Now it's the other way around.

Oh and yes DOOM has some dumb song but he makes up for it with the brilliant ones.

I think what I want to say (and i think i agree with you there) mainstream / underground says more about how many records you sell than how good your music actually is.

All true. lil waynes underground music is very good. but after he blew up (again) he started reusing lyrics and saying random dumb stuff just so it would rhyme. DOOM has a way of saying some intense lyrics in the dumbest of songs. but some songs are just so dumb it really dosent matter to me IMO. i feel people should love rap music regardless of its mainstream or not. i kno i can make some gret lyrics if i wanted 2, but i would take a multi-million dollar record deal over keepn it real

Its just like religion and politics, people cant find a balance between them. even though the possibility exists. SAme with mainstream and underground, Alot of the underground scene has become snobs leading them away from the message that underground brings, And mainstream hip hop has leaned towards romanticizing suffering in the most sexxy and rich manner, bringing alotve hate from the underground scene. Seems like were all in the same boat, were experiencing pain, so lets paddle together : )

that's beautiful cody. if you take it to another level further, a good song is a good song, mainstream or underground. also, what becomes mainstream began as underground and now rap has gone back to the underground. the underground becomes mainstream when a trend happens and lots of people follow it. when an artist signs with a label and starts going to be played on mtv, bet, etc, it becomes the mainstream, heck putting vids on youtube is mainstream since youtube is the new media.

that's right 2ndkrezz. wu tang, biggie, tupac, and KRS One and such were mainstream rappers, and yes they all made poppy songs, well except for KRS one, but rapture is poppyish. they were on mtv, bet, radio, etc. they signed on to big labels which sold CD's for $13+ and concerts for more, and i'm sure there were underground cats making music that was anti music industry/commercialism at the time that was just as good, sometimes better, sometimes worse. in the end a good song is a good song.

Freeway has been had hot shit. I will admit I did not like Philly Freeway 2 but Philly Freeway 1 is fire. State Prop fire. Free At Last one of my favorite albums this decade. Freeways got fire.
