I overheard two students talking. They thought it was a boring waste of time. I can understand that. But I don't agree myself. I think it's a lot of fun, yes, trippy & abstract, but also beautiful looking too. It's like a Japanese Barbarella. It also seems like a collection of all the things Suzuki would have put into his next 60s films for Nikkatsu (shooting a diver from the pool) if he hadn't been fired first.
The intro song is by Ego-Wrappin, and I know they composed and performed Noraneko no Theme (Stray Cat's Theme) especially for this film, but I don't know if that song, and the one being played is one and the same. This may just be me, but looking through EW's discog, I can't find Noraneko no Theme. It does make an appearance with a subtitle of 'Nazo Ver.' on a cd called 'Cool Beauties' apart of something called 'Beautiful Song Series', along with another Yoshie Nakano (EW's vocalist) song.
The theme song is called 'Psychoanalysis' in English, and it is on the albums 'Michishio No Romance' and 'Best Wrappin' 1996-2008', both available in the US as imports. They REALLY should have put this song on the Pistol Opera soundtrack!
Several versions of 'Stray Cat's Theme' is on the Pistol Opera soundtrack, but it is the slower, more languid piece that you here halfway through the trailer.
from what i've heard, pistol opera was too artsi, and was not all that great. i think people may be giving this movie more props than it deserves, but i will have to see for myself.
Beware - The jazzy "theme" in the movie and trailer is NOT on the soundtrack. I believe it is by the group EGO-WRAPPIN', a big Japanese swing/blues/jazz band. I have NO idea of the song title or which CD it is from. Having just picked up the 'Pistol Opera' soundtrack from CD Japan, I can tell you that it is NOT there! :(

Seriously, I always qualify my favorite Japanese movie with, "Modern or classic?". Cause I can't split this and Seven Samurai.

no bullshit, it does own kill bill, seing as to how tarantino lifted his style from this film and others from this genre.

Absolutely insane, probably knocks KILL BILL out of the ballpark, though.
