If 20% of the world forgave like they did then this world would be a much better place.I am a Catholic that lives in the Caribbean.I thought the Amish were nutcases that didn't fancy technology but I have so much respect for your way of doing things now.All of us can learn from your example whether Atheist,Christian,Muslim,Hindu or Buddhist.
The Bible tells us as Christians we are suppose to be in the world but not off the world. If people don't know Jesus, they will find it hard to understand how a community can show such love and forgiveness in the face of such a terrible tragedy. These people showed the heart of Jesus to the entire world in an extraordinary way. They are an example to us all.
It's amazing how surprised some people are at their capacity to forgive others who slight them. This is what true Christians and proper human-beings do.
Some people may say they don't believe in "God" (or in whatever they view the idea of God to be), but as a wise man once said "To believe in God is to do good to man". It's what's in your heart.
I don't think I would have been able to just forgive someone for taking my child away from me permanently, even if it was the right thing to do according to my religion. I would need plenty of greiving time, and then additional time to consider forgiving that person. I would not seek vengence but I would be extremely ugly towards that person.
God is the greatest. God Bless the Amish. The Amish forgave the killer, but all glory to God, not men. It's is the beauty and the presence of Jesus that made the Amish forgive the killer, not the Amish. They are truly God's children.
As a Pennsylvanian living in another state, I shall never forget the inspirational and heartfelt forgiveness of my neighbors, the AMISH community of Lancaster, Pennsylvania on this tragic event. My heartfelt prayers and best regards to the families who lost their beloved daughters. May the Lord Almighty richly bless the AMISH Communities throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Keith Olbermann is usually one of the most hatefull, bigoted (toward conservatives) people on TV. But, I will give him credit for giving an inspiring opinion on this issue.
man that's awful..I know that if you forgive someone is not easy at all..it needs a lot of work to forgive someone BUT what i couldn't understand why they would pay the widow..I mean this sounds strange for me..however i respect how amish people way of thinking that they are doing this for god but doesn't seems realistic for me....
@super123raka Yeah...I have a hard time seeing that this "complete" forgiveness is realistic. I mean, what if they truly, in their heart, haven't forgiven? What if they are burning up with anger? Shouldn't they be honest with their anger first and then forgive? Where does justice fit into this? Hey, Rakan, does the Quran speak of forgiveness and allowing God to bring justice?
@badooor20012002 They do have a big heart! The Amish are known for being very peaceful and loving people. I would live in a community like theirs if I could also use the internet! Though...in their community, everything a person does is regulate. Hmmmm... I don't think I could live with that :) What about you?
@christensenlow :D ummmm, I think it's worth to give it shot..In my country i used to camp in the desert for a week or two but only in the winter, because i won't survive in the summer season. @badooor20012002 But that's just for two weeks! What about living like an Amish for your whole life?! I know that life in Saudi Arabia is a bit "restricted", right? What do you think? How does it compare to life in the US?
I was asking my self.. could I forgive??well..yeh maybe even it would take time and I would do it for god ..but could I forget?? ..NO WAY..actually I dont wanna see any1 related to the killer around me in the same area I may asking them 2 leave also ..yeh ..I can't imagine my self forced to see ppl related to some1 killed one of my family!! They gona remind of the whole thing again and again..@ the end we r human not angels!!
@aalmansour1 Hmmm...good points, Amal. Do you think they are deluding themselves? Do you think they have truly forgiving the killer and his family? I would also have a problem being in the same room with the "reminder" of my child's violent death. Do you think it is healthy how they forgave?
@christensenlow ...Well, yeh I can't understand their feelings toward the killer family! And I dont think they did "truly" forgive the killer and his family in such a short period!! It doesnt make sense to me..I mean u can't control ur heart and mind and just erase everything happened. What I think is they r showing forgiveness but inside their heart they may still feel anger or at least little bet, It needs time to heal !
@aalmansour1 Yeah...I agree with you. That they need time to heal. To be honest with their anger. But maybe their choosing to forgive, despite their true feelings, is the right directions. Hmmm...
@aalmansour1 Of course , they feel anger ! They ARE STILL human ! However , their faith`s so strong that instead of letting it consume them , they maintain their peaceful , forgiving disposition and go on with their lives lovingly remembering the lost children but not dwelling on the loss !
That give me a good feeling about the world because there is this kind of people inside it. I know that's a hard decision to them to give forgiveness. In fact, If someone kill any members of my family, I will not forgive them bucause that is truth.
@majedalhussan Yeah, I agree. If the world was full of people like this, it would be a better place. Though, since there are "evil" people in the world, is this really what should be done? What about justice? And how do you think these people are different? What makes them like that? :)
@sujin0320 How is that, Sujin? How is forgiveness revenge? Isn't forgiveness allowing the person to simply get off from the judgement of their actions?
I have come to believe that religion plays little to no role in good or even heroic behavior. Certain people are born and raised with a compassionate, forgiving attitude or they are not. I've seen people who go to church every Sunday and times in between who have a deep, ingrained hatred toward others who are not like them. I've also known people who are not Christians or even spiritual who exhibit amazing Christlike, Buddhalike, etc. compassion and forgiveness.
The forgivness does not mean you have to trust, be angry or even allow a person back in your life. People seem not to understand that. God instructs us to forgive because we ALL cause hurt and harm in some way. Rather it is by lieing, stealing, cheating or in this case tragically murder. To forgive takes time and it starts with speaking it.
I watched the video which I understand but hardly agree with the unreasonable forgiveness. I understand that forgiveness can help to release the stress of anger and bring peace into the heart. However, I just wonder what would happen to the entire society if only the forgiveness was encouraged. Can the strength of forgiveness stop all crime and bring real peace to the world? Shouldn't we learn how to forgive in certain situations not all?
We sometimes hear this kind of stories from media. Even though a murder killed someone, the family forgave the murder. However, why did the Amish people do that? Why do they have strong forgiveness? They chosen forgiveness instead of revenge. Are they insane? It seems to me that they may have warm heart more than normal people. It may be from their special education or their special living style. They love people more than nowadays people do.
We often get angry and fight with even a little tiny things with people. We are getting have a small mind and far away from loving peiople. We need to learn their attitude. BUT!! It's insane!!! Their family memebers were killed!!! How did they forgive the murder???!!!
Well...I can't answer for sure why they chose to forgive so quickly and so easily. I know that it is part of their Christian faith. To be honest, I think it is hard to truly forgive. Sometimes people say they have forgiven and just hide their true feelings. I hope that's not the case with these guys! Doesn't sound like it. No matter what...I respect their decision.
It is depends on situation for me. If some serious things are happened, we have to consider about forgiveness. what if someone killed our family, especially someone whom you love much.
People are making a deal about the Amish families forgiving Roberts' family. The killer killed himself, before he did he left notes to his family. His family didn't kill the 5 girls. I find american people cruel for thinking the wife and kids of Roberts should be forgiven when they did nothing! They were victims as well as the Amish families. Wow.
Now the government and animal protection agencies are harrassing and raiding the Amish kennels calling them puppy mills. There is persecution against the Amish, and behind it are the ones that have always been behind it: The Roman Catholic Church. For centuries the RC has been killing and persecuting them, and now they came to Americas government to keep doing it. If you know a little about history you will realize. Its nothing new or farfetched. Its been happening for almost 2000 years! ROME!
None of us are perfect in this life. We all fall short of God's glory. Yet these simple hardworking people have so much to teach the rest of Christianity regarding the words of Jesus regarding forgiveness.
do you know what the amish would do it a man among them would grow a mustache?
They would demand he cuts it off,if he refused they would damn him to hell, kick him out he never could come back, lose his family and most likely his farm.
They claim to be Christians but for the most part they are full of the devil, they are extravagant in dress ,proud as peacocks and the most sneaky people you will ever meet.
Most are hypocrites while they believe they are bound for heaven, and you! English to hell
What great people. I was born German Baptist, and I have Amish cousins. Every time I visit their farm, I feel a little envious of their carefree lifestyle. I guess in a way, this senseless act of violence took away some of their innocence. These dear brothers and sisters in Christ are just like you and I. God bless them!
I don't know any? But in a way? I have often wondered about them--how they separate themselves from other people. I know we are to be separate from the "world" meaning the things OF the world--but they do it literally people and all. Still it works for them till somebody hurts them. I don't know what happened exactly except children were killed--I am very sorry for their hurt.
We all could learn a lesson from this tragedy...forgive one another. My prayers to these families and all touched by this tragedy, including the family of the man who did this awful thing. They are victims as well. God bless you all.
or the smart. if you cant trust people why would you keep giving them shit they could fuck you over on. i dont know about the burbs cuz u guys have block artys and swimming pools in back yards but if you come to the hood or even downtown where the stores are sayin" hello" your gonna end up in a ditch. i hate the way it is but thats the way it is. i cant even go outside without takin my dads 22 revolver with me cuz of the bullshit that goes on here. the cops dont even drive thru sum of these hood
Point taken. It is absolutely wrong for people to have to live like you describe. But as you say, it's just the way it is. The world is a complex and often terrible place. But let's hope decent people will always be out there trying to make things better.
Forgiveness takes time. It takes time to process the hatred, anger and fear that are the natural response to victimization. My Mennonite-raised mother believed that such feelings should be buried as quickly as possible out of obedience to God's commands to love one another. This is masochism, and plays a devastating role in domestic abuse situations.
This is probably why there is so much depression in Mennonite and Amish communities.
I grew up in northeast ohio, and had amish neighbors until I moved away for college. I can honestly say they are some of the most decent, honest, kind, gentle people in the world. We could all learn something from them.
wow! i just want to go and give those strong, forgiving amish people a big hug! forgivness is one of the hardest things to feel after someone you love was killed. they are amazing.
The power of forgiveness, a true Christian value that not all Christians have. And some religions (you know which one I'm talking about) have the opposite.
We should pass a new law. Any President, senator, governor, mayor, etc. of the U.S.A must come from a Amish background. Otherwise, all elected officials of the U.S.A. must spend their weekends with an Amish family. LMAO, sounds silly but I'm serious!
I doubt very much there is a god. But the morals and lifestyle(altough in some aspect antiquated) of the Amish is downright ADMIRABLE. May they find peace again.
that may be,but blood is thicker then water..and I undeerstand they forgave the family of the asshole...but forgive the killer??????Thats going to far
Jesus teaches something radically different. "You know that you have been taught, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you not to try to get even with a person who has done something to you. When someone slaps your right cheek, turn and let that person slap your other cheek. If someone sues you for your shirt, give up your coat as well." Matthew 5:38-40 CEV -- Jesus loves you and so do the Amish.
Amen. I guess the immediate reaction to seeing these people is that they are backward or simple -- and they you realize that they are so far beyond where I am. They have it figured out. They truly understand -- and live by -- Christs love.
These people are a shining example of true excellence. What a pity more people do not try to emulate their behaviour...imagine what a world this could be if we were all like them. Beautiful people.
'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.. Some times of all the religions of all the Christians I know, I think the Amish still are the closest in some ways to true biblical christianity.. just my opinion.
What is sad is that the Amish embody what every person who calls himself a Christian should embody and its so surprsing to so many. Christ was merciful to us despite all of our faults, crimes and the atrocities we place on each other. They teach us a valuable lesson and perhaps a reminder for what the heart of Christianity is.
True. As a Christian, what passes so often in the press as 'Christian' behavior is in fact just another spin off of "Operation Mockingbird" - the intelligence agencies' infiltration of prominent churches. Many don't know that the Jones 'koolaid' incidenet was a CIA op. Thanks again for your words. - Orangefu

wow! i just want to go and give those strong, forgiving amish people a big hug! forgivness is one of the hardest things to feel after someone you love was killed. they are amazing.

LMAO, sounds silly but I'm serious!
poshstyles 4 years ago
that is a kick ass idea. but he has spend the weekends with them not fly them to dc the elected official should have to go with out electricity too

I doubt very much there is a god. But the morals and lifestyle(altough in some aspect antiquated) of the Amish is downright ADMIRABLE. May they find peace again.

It's an example of Christ-like grace. Love thy enemy.

These people make me take a hard look at my walk with the Lord. What kind of Christian am I? We need to be more like these people.
Patrick044m 4 years ago
Amen. I guess the immediate reaction to seeing these people is that they are backward or simple -- and they you realize that they are so far beyond where I am. They have it figured out. They truly understand -- and live by -- Christs love.

We could learn a lot from them. This is the kind of attitude we need to keep everyday.

I wonder what the word be like if there was no law

- Orangefu
