i have a gibson les paul with stock gibson humbuckers and I find that if you turn the tone all the way off, it gets a bit too bassy, i definitely agree with you there. I like to have the tone about 2 or 3 if i'm playing clapton-like songs :)
I did tend to play more chord because for me that is what is really cool about jazz guitar....and it is very interesting about the balance between single notes and chords...it seems that once I nail a great tone for chords the single notes are not pefect......
