I think what most people forget here is that Tori Amos is the full personification of an entertainer and an afficianado of all music. She does not need to do covers to make a living. She is a great vocalist, pianist and songwriter as it is. It's her passion for music that inspires what she does when she covers songs. That's why she got kicked out of a very distinguished music school at the age of 11. She refused to follow sheet music and wanted to play Jimi Hendrix songs on the piano.
Great version and great voice dont me wrong but those pauses she repeatedly does near the chorus just irritated me, I think it kills the dynamic of the song.
Although I like the Tori we have now, I did miss the "old" Tori, but I found an artist that reminds me of the "old Tori" it brings me many happy memories, I can't begin to explain!
i have more respect for someone who covers a song a different instrument then it was originally played because it is usually harder to do that and more original.
I find it ironic that people throughout modern music history have done guitar and full band covers of classic songs like this without consequence, yet when she covers one on piano in a stripped down, intimate, delicate form, people say she's "butchering" them. If anything, she's epitomizing elements of these songs that usually go unnoticed in my opinion. She said it herself; she was finding the sorrow concealed within the rage and power of the originals. Not everyone will like it, but that's ok.
I don't know why people are giving you thumbs down because I can see where you are coming from. However I wouldn't say she's butchering other songs. She is just doing her own thing with them. Of course the originals are better, and it's not like the originals were replaced by her because we can listen to the original whenever we want. So all I would say is Tori Amos just makes a different version. If she replaced the Rolling Stone then that would be butchering...
When you think about it, Tori must love the Stone's version and her admiration may have caused her to want to pay tribute to it and them. Some will naturally enjoy her expression and some will probably hate it. There's not really an in-between for these kind of things.
I saw her on this tour in 1992 in San Diego in a small venue with about 200 people. This sure looks like that night, but I doubt it. I like her cover of 'smells like teen spirit'.
tori has being going for 15 years as is. I like a lot of the stones early cds but they havent done a cd or album that was worth a crap in the last 30 of those 40 years. well maybe the first 15 years was good for the stones but after that well.... nothing, just living on the past
Yeah... I've never been a fan of The Rolling Stones and never heard this song until I heard Tori's version which is so gorgeous. Then I went to listen to their original version. That was nice of Tori to fix it for them. I'm not even joking! lol
This is just the way I remembered her when I saw her in concert in 1992 in Knoxville, but I think the outfit may be different. Anybody got any pix from the Knoxville (TN) concert from '92?
i love tori so much she makes me remember who i really am, this time had been really hard to my, its 00:00 and i started to remember my real feeling about my life, i dont care if you are reading this but let me tell you:"you only live once"
Something about this song even after years of this performance is so moving. It's always brings me back to square one and I know everything is gonna be ok.
Holy hell. Way to make the most out of a flub. lol... Jesus, you think she's messed up the words and then she just takes it in an ENTIRELY different direction! LOL ... Amazing!
Such a beautiful cover. Such a wonderful song. I miss THIS Tori.

yes, her original version is on the 'Crucify' EP. Along with an outstanding cover of Zepellin's 'Thank You,' as well.

Thank you, I've seen her do this, different it was(full lyrics) but Tori has remade it into something that is hers.
She held a note for almost a solid minute when I saw her. The part before the final chorus...
