Relating shapes is pretty much what the video training is all about explaining these terms and why the "science" of art is so important. Negative spaces are your "holes" between objects which help you relate distances. The "midline" is the halfway point between top/bottom and left/right side--again, "seeing" where these are helps you make your perspective better. There are many of these terms, all important, all of which help you with your mechanics... Now, go get the course!
Not to be braggy, but drawing runs in my family, my brother, sister and I have been drawing since we first talked (literally) and the way we sketch is by eye not by doing some random circle technique... Not saying its wrong or bad, im 14 btw and I draw photo realistic portraits :)) ( like I said not to be braggy)
@korillagorilla well this is just a format and basic layout for a later drawing, sketching is used because you don't always have all your paint and supplies with you. you can sketch anywhere, that's the point of it.
how long did it take you, cos when i start drawing i easily think that is not going well so basically i get distracted and thing this is not going anywhere
@yusfah It does take time and focus, which are great qualities for any profession and hobby. Those come only from practice. And yes, I understand about distractions, that's common among artists because artists are usually thinking all over the map anyway--but consider that as a strength because they can see things no one else can.
The best approach is to work Large to Small and Cycle around.
If you are preparing this for painting, erasing isn't needed. The glass is not that shape and you should focus more on those details compared to sketching quickly. I noticed you gained more mistakes when trying to fix the sketch because you weren't looking at the detail anymore. Drawing out relative shapes for placement is good and I do the same.
I use what's called a "kneaded" eraser. It's a special rubber compound that kneads in your fingers to absorb the charcoal...and yes, eventually it gets too dirty and must be tossed out
It's very uncomfortable at first because you're used to holding a pencil to write. But this technique allows you to see the pencil point at all times instead of guessing where the tip is in odd corners.
This artist knows what they are doing. I like how people in the comments are saying "that's not how it's done, and "Doesn't make sense..."
Guys, shut the fuck up, and watch the video. This is what they teach you in art school/classes. I took art class last year in highschool. I did the same exact thing.
Only difference, is I don't hold the pencil like a painter.
nice vids...i have a question, why sketch is so important? cant u just start without sketching like real drawing? for example e saw some artist doing portraits and thy didnt sketch , they just start drawing real accurate plz answer me =)
@karakoisisa Well a sketch would be better because it's a base to the final result. A picture such as an exact copy is the final result of a bit of sketching.
Sketching fast allows you to "see everything all at once and relate". You don't draw a circle in little lines, you go round and round and then slowly bring the pencil down upon the paper when you have it and make several rotations averaging and adjusting as you go. Sketches are exactly the same principle. Your entire sketch should do the same, which allows you to RAPIDLY see all perspectives nearly at the same time.
Respond to this video... What do you mean by "real drawing"? That artist has been doing it for YEARS and NOW understands his placement after years of practice. Ask your next great artist if they began by drawing a head, then a hand, then a foot, then.... You'll get a wise smile and you'll hear this same answer. Practice.
This is really great. :)
I'm just having a hard time understanding what all the terminology is. What do you mean by relate shapes, negative space, and whats the midline?
