The French had the chance to sail to English ports 7 they refused. If the British Navy had not sunk the French Navy the Nazis would have occupied Gibraltar & North Africa & the British would never have had any control in the Med, also the British Navy in Malta & Cyprus would have been cut off, meaning we would have lost the war & Rommel would have ruled supreme. It also meant Italy would not have been invaded by the British, Canadians & Americans. France would be a Nazi occupied country today
The french were activly fighting against us during WW2 the fought brits and americans at egypt, sically and syria if I recall correctly and were responsible for the deaths of thousands of alliedservicemen, it's a little known fact because they been quite successful at creating an image of fierce resistance , but many frenchmen were willing collaboraters.
I had never head of this incident until I saw it on PBS last nite. Unbelievable. is all i can say about it. Just unfucking believable. I would have never guessed in a thousand years that the British could be capable of such an action. Just goes to show.... anything is possible in this crazy world.
@fight2Bfree I think it was the right thing to do cause France would rather scuddle there ships rather than giving them to the Brits so they could use them. And France had a agreement not to surender without Britans ok to do so. All is good
Imagine what Hitler could have done with the captured French fleet. They even had an aircraft carrier. The war might have turned out very differently indeed.
Backed into a corner and not trusting the French admirals to live up to there promise, Churchill took matters into his own hands. He launched "Operation Catapult" to capture the French Fleet- French battleships were docked at a naval base in the French-Algiers port of Mers-el-Kebir. Churchill issued the French an ultimatum: Give up the vessels to the British or face attack from the Royal Navy.
@ubuibiok Right thing to do yup hell the French would rather scuddle there ships than give them to Britan so they could use them so I agree on that decsion
It was Roosevelt who made a deadly decision...not being decisive in joining the war...Churchill proved him wromg in the end but the US still made more out of the death and destruction of WW2 than ANY other country....no noble ideals just cold calculating 'robbery with violence'....
@macbrack Say what you will about Roosevelt and even if all of it is true, it still ranks him infinitely higher than the b@$#@rd Churchill. Roosevelt alone was responsible for the end of direct colonialism. That act, of breaking the British Empire is the biggest positive contribution of the US to the world ever.
