Anyone who calls Jack DeJohnette sloppy, questions his technical mastery or questions his status as a top 50 ALL-TIME-GREAT on the drums, doesn't know the first damn thing about the drums. Period.
Technique? Jack has complete technique, and is a thorough musician. He goes around and beyond obvious displays of technique at times, but if you know his range, then you understand that this is completely intentional. But he is really at the summit in terms of stylistic ability and the mechanics the kit. His ability to shine in burning odd-time fusion, classic piano trio, free jazz, CTI-style, funk, minimalist, and maintain rock solid-control at the freakiest tempi testifies to this.
i play piano and guitar. i try to get every album with jack dejohnette on it becoause is so organic and natural , specially the way he plays the swing, i have talked to drummers who said that he dosent have technique, i respect their opinion. but i think that the music trascends technique, i have listened a lot of drummers with great technique tryng to play swing but fail to get that fresh and spontaneus sound that gets jack
im a guitar player and little piano , but im a drum freak and i realized that i listen more records that have jack dejohnette on drums because his phrases and lines are so beautiful and is so powerful and like a conductor of the music and the flow .
Roy is a great drummer. Magnificent. But this is not a competition. And as a lifelong admirer of both drummers, it is clear there is both a real difference in their approach to drums, as well as a wealth of specific technical and aesthetic differences. But Roy is not a "better" drummer, in any sense, technically or musically. All this "better than" cr*p poisons the music. It is a violent way to think.
