Actually no. Miao does not mean savage. Man means savage. The word miao have been misinterpret because in Vietnamese and Laos, it means totally different. Miao in Chinese means Young Seedling and Temple as well as Virtues and etc...

I call myself Hmong, however when I talk to Chinese, I would say I am Miao. Miao outside of China do not call themselves Miao, but the Hmong in China would call themselves Miao.
