Poor Sylvia probably had to literally fight the men off, of a Friday evening on her way home from The Dog & Slattern. Considering there were no DNA databases and what such in those days, poor Sylvia had no chance of achieving justice over her many, many sexually violent attackers/chancer (mostly male) family members/pets.
It's a tragedy that many young girls of Sylvia's era were lost to botched abortions, fractured hips and gravel burn.
The "army" stuff is there because the Central Office of Information makes the various adverts for the armed forces as well - see the last few minutes of part 4 of this documentary for details.
I've always loved Charlie. Possibly too much.

Anyone else think that "Sylvia" the factory girl was seriously hot?

@gullivera
Yes, probably to her detriment.

Thanks so much for posting this - I kept seeing trailers for it but can't receive BBC4 in my area.
