If you use this method you are simply not going to get good results consistently. Three RAW files is the best way. You might get lucky with jpeg once in a blue moon.
First off, wonderful tutorial - your final results were impressive. However, many people here are getting confused with true HDR and simple tone-mapping. What you have done is just tone-mapping, as HDR is defined as "HDR = An image created from two or more files of varying exposure (bracket shot, or raw-image alteration)" If he duplicated (or more than two files) and altered the raw (ev values) followed by a merge it would be considered HDR.
I think you did a real good job with this. Plenty of people still think you HAVE to have 3 images at 3 different EV's to make an HDR. I agree with you, 1 raw image can produce some fantastic HDR's. Yeah, it's fun to shoot all three, but sometimes the hassle of a tripod, or moving subjects don't permit 3. Thanks a bunch.. I'd never heard of Neat Image, I just downloaded it. Thx again
No problem lads, I had about 50 emails from people who said about my earlier tutorial with no audio, So when I got my new laptop with builtin webcam, I thoguht ti was time to up-the-bar!
Slinky! Thanks for the tutorial. You've just added about 3 hours to my day now cause I wanna go repeat this process. I was going to ask ya about this and when I saw this vid (and the LCC programme) I was well chuffed. Thanks for taking the time. GROGG (Flickr)
