Talk shows always at night.. but, WBZ still played music by day until about.. 1990 when the Gulf War broke out.. the jocks replaced with talk shows... later morphing into the newsradio format we know today in the day hours. WEEI and WBZ didn't really have any time competing as all news outlets unless you count the PM news block starting at 4:30 for a time then at 5pm (90 or 60 to 6.. was the name of that newsblock.
I thought the old WEEI was a CBS- (once owned and) formatted all news station. I know CBS got out by this time, but I thought they still had the all news format like the other CBS owned stations (and format before the Group W buyout.)
WEEI was Newsradio 590 until 1990 or something like that.. then it became Sportsradio.. later migrating to 850 in its present form. WBZ was still playing music until the Persian Gulf War broke out... music in daytime replaced with talk.. some years later turning to news in day.
I couldn't keep up with the all news/talk/sports talk/WHDH/WEEI circle. it seemed by this time by the cut here, that WEEI had some talk programming. I had presumed WEEI had the all news wheel similar to the other CBS formatted news stations at that time, even after the sale.
WEEI had the news wheel similar to WCBS.. until the evening... then I recall old time radio in the early evening... and as this aircheck shows.. Larry King overnight... WTOP had Larry King as well in those days.
Is that the voice of Diane Stern.. now the voice of WBZ's afternoon efforts.. sure sounds like it.

It is - she was there before she switched to BZ.

Was it '78 did 'BZ turn to news-talk? I wonder what it was like having two competing newsradio stations in Boston...
