Hee hee! I can relate to that memory dude being the same age! These kids have it easy now - they can text the woman they met at the nightclub the next day. Me and you had to do it the hard way - a nerve wracking phone call from a phone number scratched into a fag packet with a dead match to a woman you can barely remember though you'd snogged her face off a few hours before :)
Memories of a long school coach trip, buying Original Soundtrack on cassette at a service station. My friends all listening to crappy earnest Deacon Blue and Del Amitri shit. I had this on my walkman, wishing I wasn't 14 and could go to gay clubs.
there is a version of this on the 12inch called the glass cut, if anyone can get it it is the definative version,................. yes,, yes,, but its,,, its wonderfull.....
I'm sure it's probably been pointed out somewhere before, but the "Yes, yes...this - It's wonderful" line is sampled from the original 'Stepford Wives' movie.
Well, this song have all the 1989 soul, just peace, love, happiness, fun and brotherhood, nothing to do with this times full of hate. Long Live Acid House.
You fucken poofters!-ya got the best parties, the best drugs, all the styling shit-us straight blokes can't get a root cause all the good sorts are hangin off yuz-This CD got thrashed in the player when i was waitin for games to load on the C64 Tape loader as a kid-Fair Dinkum, it's not just your shit Liberace!!!
me and my friends (who are all straight ) always go to Gay pubs in Brighton because a) they always play great music, b) the people are always so friendly, and b) Gay pubs aren't full of retards....
This tune is a topper, - The ultra deep Bubbley TB-303 bass was (and still is) lethal. - Play this tune on a decent system (not a standard home Hi-Fi) and you get the proper feel to it. - (BTW , what happened to Eric & the Good Good Feeling,.. Red Light Green Light Bouncin' off the Wall... absolute gem of a tune... (yikes...Flashback to Hit Man & Her on ITV)
Glass mix was odd. love the William Orbit mix though. Still have all 3 12"s somewhere in a box.. hope they haven't gone mouldy wanna dig them out now/
The dame on the wire is Billy Ray Martin who is still doing disco diva toons. The Phillip Glass remix of this song was totally nuts. Love to get it on vinyl again.
i did check out sly and the family stone as you suggested. The two arent really comparable. Totaly different style of music. I love this s express version and wasnt really fussed on the original. Its just a matter of taste. Would be boring if we all liked the same. x
I don't usually ever write abusive comments - but this is TERRIBLE compared to the Sly original. PLEASE check out Sly and the Family Stone at Woodstock just to appreciate how crap this is.
I did as you said and listened to the sly original. The two arent really comparable. Totaly different style of music. I love this s express version but i can see how you would hate this if you are a fan of the original. Its just a matter of taste. ;-)
yes the original is by the sly and the family stone from their 1968 album dance to the music. track 4: Dance to the Medley: Music Is Alive/Dance in/Music Lover. There is a live version on youtube: ?v=DMmGf7JTrwE
mark moore has recently revived s'express project from cryogenic slumber and released a brand new single titled "stupid little girls" on kitsuné records. have a look at itunes... and by the way, the blonde who gets taken higher is the queen of electronic soul ms. billie ray martin!!!
My experience exactly! I had no idea that line was a film snippet - so when I eventually got round to watching the Stepford Wives (1975 version), it gave me an absolutely MASSIVE jolt!
That is delightful! I know some of the people in that video. I don't think I've seen this before. That is a brilliant single--arguably better than THEME. The later, international remixes were fabulous. I have a very rare US promo CD of them. I miss that period of time in Soho life!
Takes me back to Army days in Berlin (88-92) a brother from New York never had it so good! Ain't never seen a fashion fad quite like good old 'Biker Shorts' and T-shirts in the Discos!
Despite being an obvious product of the late 1980s dance boom, this song (even minus the video) sounds great today because it has a freshness and originality that hasn't really dated in the way that a lot of its contemporaries have.
It's somehow much less obviously "of its time" than a lot of house-related tracks (and the early-1990s techno stuff that followed it).
S Express' success came out mainly by chance.... Mark moore didn't expect the project to be that good .... They just met , played, cracked jokes and had fun together...and maybe that's the recepy of success and originality ....
S express ' music just stays unique still today and I think no other band could take the message and keep the ball going .....
omg this is so cool, not heard it for age's. the skool disco it was played at, then Betty Boo followed now long after,, the days when chart music was worth listenin too unlike now.. pure shite.
i remember that video being filmed, i was seeing David cabaret at the time, he was a fab bloke and from what i have been told did all the costumes for boy George's Taboo
Billie Ray Martin that's a girl from Electribe101 and they were also brill and was my favorite.S-Express thier first album still sounds pretty cool worth buying if found on CD as its fairly rare(its deleted).
S'Express made some of the best dance music during their time...the video is terribly "dated" but you can't help but want to wave your arms in the arm and shake your ass!
I don't agree that the video is at all "dated" in that sense; simply because it's not remotely typical of house/early techno videos of that era, nor even of the general 1980s/early-90s look. Even despite the obvious 1970s influence, it doesn't actually look like any video from the 1970s. Visually, I'd probably have trouble dating it if I wasn't already familiar with the song.
