I wonder if Hakoda and Bato are that bright because why didn't bato short things out between Sokka Katara and Aang after Aang showed them the map to where there Father was because he sould have known there just kids and they dont know any better and He did nothing what a idiot.
true like they were all raised in the middle of a war that they had other things to worry about but they forget about what really important and the fact there just kids.
and your right Bato probley did think it wasn't his place to get involved I noticed Bato deosn't get involved in anything proble because he deosn't have his own Family
also it was all Sokka Katara why Aang kept the map to where there father was and why Aang had the Riddicules Notion of saving the world alone in the Awakening because they leted there Anxioty get out of Control and Family isuues get in the way that it effected those around them like Aang for instince if they had handled thing diffrently then Aang wouldn't have kept the map to where there father was from them and he wouldn't have had that riddicules Notion of saving the world alone.

I got the impression that they were quite intelligent when it came to war plans and fighting, don't know about anything esle though ^-^'
It does seem dumb that Bato didn't intervene with Katara, Sokka and Aang, but maybe he just didn't feel like it was his place to get involved?
But Hakoda, for one, did seem a little clueless most of the time :)
