I watched this episode for the first time in January of 2012 and I can't help but be saddened by it. If Newt Gingrich wins the nomination Obama would NEVER have the stones to sit and intelligently dialogue with him in the way that Dodd did. He would never do it. We will get campaign adds and lofty speeches where he promises the world, but I just don't see him sitting down in a forum like this and honestly discussing ideas. Right?

That was a really good debate. Both Chris & Newt clearly made distinctions. Both sides made their case. Most importantly, neither one distorted the others positions. While they disaggreed with each other they kept it civil.

This "debate" is another example of how little difference there is in philosophical principle between the Democrats and Republicans:
Newt: "I agree with Dodd that we need a dramatically expanded ability to use statecraft...We are in a world-wide war...we need to win this war."
Dodd simply nodds. The two parties do not disagree on principle; only on tactics. Everyone has forgotten the advice of Washington and Jefferson of staying out of foreign conflicts and constantly policing the world. Sad.
It was Washington and Adams who believed in neutrality, not so much with Jefferson. Jefferson after the The American Revolution wanted to nation build and expand the United States's presence into other territories abroad but Washington, who was at the time President, saw how dangerous this was because of how young and fragile the country was at the time and therefore wanted the country to focus on developing on its current territory.

On the religion note, a true conservative believes in personal freedom. He might advocate having a religion over not having a religion but as long as he keeps government from making choices for you, we all win regardless.

If you REALLY watch this video, you will see ONE man (Dodd) use "party line" rhetoric (approved and stamped by the party), while the other man essentially is saying "this is what I THINK".

My personal belief - as a former liberal - is that liberalism is like a 14 year old girl in a family. She's embarrassed by her dad, in constant fights with her mother, and can't stand to be around her brothers. Everything her family does is "ridiculous" or "unfair", until she goes off to college, and sees for herself how good her home-life was. At 22 she reconciles with her family. Liberals never reconcile.
You're right. He simplifies the complex. The French did not invade the U.S. to free us from the British! Our problems with Columbia were not simple, and criticizing an ally is not the same (in that instance) as totally withdrawing support. However, on the big points he makes a lot of sense. This "debate" is another example of how little difference there is in philosophical principle between the Democrats and Republicans:
Newt: "I agree with Dodd that we need a dramatically expanded ability to use statecraft...We are in a world-wide war...we need to win this war."
Dodd simply nodds. The two parties do not disagree on principle; only on tactics. Everyone has forgotten the advice of Washington and Jefferson of staying out of foreign conflicts and constantly policing the world. Sad.

It was Washington and Adams who believed in neutrality, not so much with Jefferson. Jefferson after the The American Revolution wanted to nation build and expand the United States's presence into other territories abroad but Washington, who was at the time President, saw how dangerous this was because of how young and fragile the country was at the time and therefore wanted the country to focus on developing on its current territory.

I agree with about his religion, that's what's one of the things I like about him. Huckabee and others are very holier-than-thou and annoying. Hannity comes off that way when he talks religion with Hitchens or Dawkins. But Newt is nice about it.

it's actually the exact opposite. when democrats spend money it builds the government and the money does not get distributed to the organization it was intended, instead it goes directly into their pockets. democrats push work oversees because of their heavy regulations and taxes on small businesses. ever heard of trial lawyers, labor unions? no wonder american jobs are getting outsourced. small businesses have no chance of making profit in the U.S. and therefore unemployment rises!

That didn't seem to be of any substance to Sen. Dodd. Newt made the point so well of how demoralizing it would be to the troops currently serving in Iraq to have a timeine specified at this time. It sounded to me like Sen. Dodd was singularly riveted to "name a time" without considering all the ramifications of doing so. He, (Sen. Dodd) dredged up so many irrelevent topics, which seemed more confusing than helpful.

If you REALLY watch this video, you will see ONE man (Dodd) use "party line" rhetoric (approved and stamped by the party), while the other man essentially is saying "this is what I THINK".

My personal belief - as a former liberal - is that liberalism is like a 14 year old girl in a family. She's embarrassed by her dad, in constant fights with her mother, and can't stand to be around her brothers. Everything her family does is "ridiculous" or "unfair", until she goes off to college, and sees for herself how good her home-life was. At 22 she reconciles with her family. Liberals never reconcile.

You're right. He simplifies the complex. The French did not invade the U.S. to free us from the British! Our problems with Columbia were not simple, and criticizing an ally is not the same (in that instance) as totally withdrawing support. However, on the big points he makes a lot of sense. Where he breaks down often is that he's too logical. He advocates national ID cards so that (and he's actually said this in these words) everyone can be tracked!

It's truely the sign of a great leader who can offer solutions to complex problems....Newt is the smartest "polotician" I have ever heard speak. He is very insightful, and speaks the truth....Here is a problem, he looks at many possible scenerios and finds the best solution! I think he is our only hope for REAL leadership. Newt, When you announce you candidacy, you will have my complete support!!!

Newt has sound reasoning, Dodd, however doesn't have any real answers, so does the typical Democrat debate,
and changes the subject, without any real conclusion .

I consider myself bi-partisan when it comes to politics, and if anything I would be slightly left leaning. Newt is smart, Newt shouldn't be lumped in with neo-conservatives because he isn't. He is a very reasonable conservative.
