  • Bravo! Mormon 101 heard that "those high B's were a little pushed". I however did not. You are doing great work on here in making the most of what you have. I mean that in a good way. I don't know what prerecorded music your using but I know that it is not easy to fit into it. What do you use?

  • see braces aren't that terrible, i had them and they actually helped me play higher. and getting them off isn't that huge of a problem. just practice helps

  • So I have a little less than a month to learn this for an audition, and I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out during this time too. This should be fun!

  • Love it! You're an amazing player. I hope to be as good as you someday. I would very much appreciate it if you would record the solo I'm playing this year. I'm playing the Richard Strauss op. 11, please. Thanks :)

  • Would it be possible to play this on a single F horn? Thanks, great performance.

  • Thank you so much! I'm working on this and it helps to hear it.

  • My horn playing has suffered greatly since I got braces. It seems no matter how much I practice, I am still not at the level I was prior to being braced. What should I do?

  • @brassvirtuoso Braces can be a real challenge. When I had them I got short strips of wax and pressed them into the braces on my front teeth. I did this every time I played for 2 and 1/2 years. But it really helped me. The day I got the braces off, everything was instantly better.

  • @brassvirtuoso Actually I just got braces 5 months ago & play horn. All I can say is practise applying as little pressure as you can. You don't have to wear wax every time you play, you have to let the inner tissue harden up around the areas you play. However, you can choose to apply wax, up to you.

  • What kind of french horn are you playing?

  • @lovelybabee86 I think, it's a Conn. I don't know, which model, but the conn is sure.

  • whoa! did you do that entire sixteenth note section in one breath?!

  • I love your rendition. You are amazing. You got my subscription!

  • Gratz from Bulgaria i am 9 grade and soon will be playing this concert :)

  • When does the first movement end? At the key change to A flat (4:48)?

  • @ILUVKS1993 Yes it does end there, however, since I have the sheet music, it changes to E flat instead of A flat which you said ;)

  • Just out of curiosity from one horn player to another, are you usually standing when you make these videos, or do you sit down sometimes?

  • @Chrisgoing I stand for everything except some of the Fripperies. I usually stand when I practice as well.

  • Very beautiful!

This song is too hard, but it’s awesome!

    Congratulations Steve!

I won’t play like you, but I feel encouraged to keep learning when I saw you playing so beautiful as you play.

  • Nice! Where do you teach at?

  • what mouthpiece do you use?

  • This is not an orchestra. Maybe a keyboaed.

  • Excellent job!! I played this for my jury last semester, but not half this well. I still haven't quite mastered the lip trill....

I don't know how you feel about unaccompanied pieces, but I'd like to hear a recording of Buyanovsky's "Four Improvisations"

  • this is my all county peice i suck so much :/

  • Like the vanishing trick!

  • I love it! I've been playing the horn for a year and learning pretty fast. I still don't understand how to do a lip trill???

  • omg!! i have to play that for a contest ... without notes!!! and im 15!!!!!!

  • @ohsteacher

this solo is my audition piece for the Mississippi Lions All State Band. Really helpful finding someone this talented to listen to playing it so i know what to strive for. Thanks for the post

  • any chance of getting the backing track off you?

    nice playing

  • Beautiful, and sounds so effortless! What a treat!

  • This is beautiful. I play the same concerto, but on a diffrent horn, not a French one.

  • Stunning performance of a work by a composer who is rapidly becoming my favourite writer for horn (though I'm not sure he can beat Mozart... equal maybe!)

  • As always Steve, your video performances are wonderful. Showing off a smooth if not effortless technique and an inspiring musicianship that is a joy to hear. Thanks for putting this "library" together. I hope many students (of all ages) can appreciate all your hard work and dedication to the project.

  • what's the highest note?

  • Bb above the staff

  • @xinwen4

    Bb

  • best recording I've found of this concerto. Thank you and AMAZING job!!!

  • Fantastic - nicely done. Great tone

  • Das war ausgezeichnet! Entlich. Ich hab auch einen guten Stück gefunden. Vieren Dank !

  • is the hand strap you use in this video easily obtainable? i feel like i need a little more stability...

  • It's called a Clebsch strap. You can search for it online.

  • thanks!

  • I loved the horn part in this concerto but the accompaniment just didn't sound liked it clicked to me. The Horn player was magnificent, don't get me wrong, but I felt like the way this piece was written just didn't inspire me much.

  • @0HN0D1N0

i think the reason you dont like this one is because the accompaniment is synthesized, try grabbing a barry tuckwell recording with an actual orchestra

  • Beautiful tone, very musical. This concrto is new for me and I like it!!! (it looks hard, though...)

  • Finally! A good recording of this concerto for youtubers! Thank you!

  • last years nyssma good times :] why couldnt you have this up last year!!! haha these are so helpful though thank you soooo much :]

  • Awesome! I would enjoy some orchestral excerpts

  • And I'm having trouble on Thailand Lullaby in my Essential Elements 2000 book!

  • Oh, I love this concerto. I've never technically "worked on it", but it's easy enough that I can just pull it out periodically and play through it when I'm bored. So much fun :)

  • You look sick in this Steve, have you been getting much sleep lately? Exceptional performance as always, it amazes me how anyone can get all those 16th note runs near the end of the first movement!

  • Thanks for adding the Franz Strauss concerto to your YouTube collection. I am learning this and the Strauss Nocturno with my teacher in Nottingham. This resource is good for us amateurs to help us get the feel of a piece and correct mistakes.

  • that is so cool
