My parents took me to see "The Exorcist" when I was five years old, so as you can imagine, I have vivid memories of the film. It is still frightening. (I should say despite that lapse I have WONDERFUL parents.) Anyway, this is a fascinating interview. Thanks for posting. It would have been even more interesting if Mercedes McCambridge had agreed to appear. She sounded bitter about the film, but was AMAZING. Thanks again.
exorcist - 1973, a film classic but one thing i could never understand about the film is when reagans possessed by pazuzu, she has all these injuries, her head spins around on her shoulders , she stabs herself violently in her privates. then when shes cured, all her injuries just magically disappear?
i mean wouldn't she be severely wounded mortally or need a medical emergency right away?
@kelyoph Well, something did! Oh, I'm not saying that it was some kind of demon that made my mattress vibrate. But I can tell you...I remember it like it was yesterday. It was bizarre, and felt very real to me at the time. And I was wide awake, too. Freaked me out! Make no mistake, the premise of The Exorcist is that a dis-embodied spirit, in this case the devil, entered the body of a young girl. I have NO DOUBT that this can and does happen, more often than you might think. Yes!
Yes it did scare me because "religion" & exorcisms are real and this is losely based on a real exorcism -- its a masterpiece from top to bottom...... and remains as intense 37 years later
Oh boy, I remember the winter of '73 in Crete, Nebraska. A bunch of my college buds and I drove my 64 Fairlane 2dr. the 40 miles into Lincoln in snowy, drifty weather...smoking the bong the entire way...to go see this movie. Naturally, we just sat in that theatre silently and got our minds blown. There wasn't much talking on the way back, either. I swear to God, that nite back in my ancient old dorm, with my mattress on the floor as my bed, it frickkin' kept vibrating. I'm not joking. It did.
@WickedTornado I just happened on this site and saw your post. I also attended that movie on a cold winter's night at the State theatre down on O street!!! I recall feeling chilled in more ways than one.....it definitly, for it's time, was the most frightening thing I have ever , or ever will see!!!
@janmuldoon What year did you see it....same as me...either '73 or '74? Was the State theatre an indoor theatre? Was it on the south side of O Street?
Wouldn't that have been wild if we would have been inside that place at the same time?
I don't remember much about Lincoln after that. Actually, my family moved to Arizona in '61, but I went to Doane Coll. my frosh year, then moved back. As a kid in Lincoln, we lived in an area called Eastridge. Great place for a kid!
i think seeing this film as a devout catholic (or some other kind of christian group) who also believes in satan or an evil presence in the universe, would definitely kick it up a few more notches in terms of the fear factor. also, the scientific skepticism of the doctors who finally gave into the girl getting an exorcism (her belief in possession caused it, so her belief in the power of exorcism will make it disappear) really gave the film depth and intelligence, unlike most other horror films.
@kelyoph That was Joan Lunden. You probably remember her with much less hair. She was around for a long long time. I hate these type of shows....the ones where each time the camera pans to another host they all chirp " good morning so-and-so" "Good morning" "Oh...good morning!!" They tend to get really syruppy. Not only that, they're ALL heavily liberal.
Is it true that actually an other girl was acting "Regan", but than she died, because she become mentally ill after shooting this movie? Maybe its a rumer but I would be lucky if anyone of you knows the truth :) Thaaanks a lot
@CokokeksBL Not true. There was another actress who did some of the stunt work on the film, Eileen Dietz, who also played the scary looking face that keeps popping up throughout the film. Her parts made it into the final cut, so in some of the more risque scenes, It's Dietz and not Blair.
@osfs3411 Mh okay, so it was just a rumer. Thank you for answering, now I could sleep well :D Because I was realy scared when I heard that someone died, it was kind of wierd.
damn, i want to see this so badly..i bought the book a week ago and my mom bout had a fit. she told me that if i wanted to read the book that the book was not to leave the comoforts of my bedroom...ever!
I think someone's head turning full circle would be a lot more likely than a person levitating. If the skin doesn't tear it would stay on and there a some animals whose heads can turn that way.
I can't believe she got so tormented for doing this film her parents too. and what is with that fucking human dog bullshit all over the place IS THIS REAL OR FAKE? IT IS FUCKED UP! get your stupid brainless piece of shit you call art off of you tube its stupid and you are a sick mother fucker like a Dahmer to put this shit on here FUCK You flew and flew way over the coo coo's nest you sick minded fuck!
I think that some people who say the film is funny do so to avoid the emotional reaction you might have if you allowed yourself to buy into it. Even if you find the basic premise funny or unbelievable, there are still some viscerally disturbing moments; Regan getting tests done at the hospital, for instance. Not humorous or campy at all.
One of the rumors/stories in the mid to late 70s was the book was based on Shirley MacLaine and her daughter (the possessed child) and not the 1949 Maryland boy. I saved articles from all horror movies when I was really young (this film was my last for some reason)...and I remember reading that small excerpt regarding Shirley MacLaine and how angry she was at the accusation. Funny how she became very spiritual in the late 70s and early 80s. MacLaine and MacNeil...sort of an anagram? ;)
@Raisioa Well ive found that people who didn't find this movie scary or instead found it funny were the ones who were too shallow to take in the meaning of it. As in those who literally just watch but don't think.
@EzpionHD or maybe they were people who know better, because there is no such thing as the devil, no such thing as ghosts, it has never proven anything. why should i be scared of something that doesnt exist? it is only the weak minded and ignorants that feel scared of something unreal and unproven
@EzpionHD i think with 2days movies, saw, etc,we r desensitized 2 things.i didnt think much of the movie personally.i can see why it was such a major deal back then.i understand the meaning fully, just found the movie dull.sorry.
@EzpionHD What an utterly ridiculous thing to say.
The film isn't scary. It's an absolute masterpiece, but it isn't scary. The thought is scary. But such events are not impossible.
It has some of the greatest acting in of all time and is one of the best directed films of all time. I watch the film with reverence, taking in all that it is.
But I didn't find a single scene to be scary. At all. I found some to be disturbing and gross, but fear wasn't produced.
@saintoccasionally Yeah, Scream is a horror/comedy, for sure. That comment was in response to a different comment that said "Saw" and "Scream" were scarier than "The Exorcist".
@osfs3411 this movie did not phase me at all, maybe because i was not and am not a religious man but in all honesty i have never seen a movie that has truly scared me besides Aliens.
Interesting that GMA uses stills from 'Exorcist II: The Heretic' when discussing Linda Blair as Regan or Max von Sydow as Father Merrin. Linda Blair did not play Regan possessed in 'The Heretic' as she refused to submit to the make-up process once again. Another actress played that role.
@jlcdltofficial At the time, it was scary. Possibly the scariest film of the era. I mean, look at the other movies of the time, then watch The Exorcist. It's absolutely horrifying in comparison!
Linda Blair and Jason Miller really made that movie. Both performances were utterley fantastic for the time, no child actor today could pull off such a gravitas performance. Bravo to both. She ended up beautiful. And Jason was phenomenal.
i remember there used to be this rumor long ago... back where i used to live that the actor jason miller was killed in a grizzly accident on a beach somewhere by having a motorbike run over his head crushing it.
the dumb rumors that started when this classic movie first hit the cinema houses.
@cujo9 Oddly, there's actually some truth to that rumour. It was Jason's son, not Jason himself, who was run over by the motorbike on the beach. He didn't die but he was severely injured and put in intensive care.
@AllUrUtubeRbelong2me I will agree with you that The Exorcist is (hands down) the scariest movie ever. The Ring was pretty scary to me, but I will say that all Horror movies now-a-days cannot even come close to what the Exorcist did.
@gregpicadash Scary movies now a days, to you maybe, arent as scary as the Exorcist, to you. But think about the kids who grow up in this generation, the movies we have these days deff scare the living hell out of us, not gonna lie, The Ring was deff my Exorcist, that shit scarred me for life.... lol. I'm guessing you're a lot older than me if the Exorcist scared you, it made me laugh, only because the affects those days were.. not what we have today lol
@chestneychiller1 Don't tell me that special effect or awsome today... today they look like cartoons or video games. But, if you are young enough, may be it is a question of habit.
@WALTKRIEG I dont see how you think that, the exorcist and any other movie back then didnt have the technology it does today, thats why I drool of boredom when I watch old horror films, they dont scare me. Todays films scare the shit out of me. Even my mom agreees todays stuff is better, but the exorcist scared her too when she was younger.
@chestneychiller1 its got nothing to do with the fx. the writing, acting, direction and imagination was far superior back in the day. nowadays its all cgi or as i call it, cartoons.
@loveallthepeople1000 Cartoons are drawn. CGI is computer generated images, two different things. But i see what you mean as far as story lines for todays films go, nothing is ever original, and if it is, it sucksss.
@chestneychiller1 : I partially agree that age plays a part in “taste”, but thankfully I find that it is not always the case. Many age groups have told me that The Exorcist played on the physiological and psychological senses, causing a horrific impact because it felt real or it could actually happen. Ultimately, I’m sure you would agree that regardless of age, it's a matter of taste. "The Ring" was very scary! I couldnt look at the TV for a week. I thought that girl would come out of it! LOL
@gregpicadash Agreed. lol. The Ring to me, affected me the same way the Exorcist did my mom, Samara is like Reagan to me, scary. And if she was ever near me I swear I'd shit lol.
@AllUrUtubeRbelong2me The Ring was good.. story line was dumb I agreee with that, theres no such thing as a killer video tape lol. But that shit was mad scary, Samara scarred me for life and I didnt watch tv for a long ass time, but you are right about some movies these days, they're stupid as fuck cause no one can come up wth a good idea anymore...
PPL ARE SOOOOOOOOOO EVIL. who in their right mind gives death threats to a 14yrs old. ppl are also VERY gulible. ITS A MOVIE ITS NOT REAL. WOW this movie took a lot of work to accomplish. what yr was this interview.
I was six years old when this film came out. I remember my sister coming home after seeing it and telling us about it. Her descriptions of the film alone were enough to traumatize me into sleeping with the light on for weeks. I didn't watch the film until I was a teenager, and it had the same effect as it did when I was six--slept with the light on for weeks.
You can tell this was shot in 1983 or 84 by how they are dressed. None of the women have blue spiked hair or tattoos either. When was the last time women dressed like the women in this video? 1980s
Clearly this movie was made by Democrats. They called the little girl Reagan. Think about it. Ronald Wilson Reagan ... how many letters in each of his names? 6 .... 6 ..... 6
well, almost 40 years later, and tons of scary-not movies (japs do great though)... and this is still the only movie that scares the feeling of security out me
@WhyteChocolutt Oh gosh darnit, say it isn't so skip. You're just going to have to give me lessons on how to be more brave, seeing as how you're an expert and all =)
The story Ellen Burstyn told about the woman fainting in the movie theater was a classic. That's really funny; imagine waking up to see Chris Macneil trying to revive you while all this bad stuff is happening on the screen. Priceless!
@thegirl44 Haha, oh bless ya. I hear you though, the film definitely stays with you. I always remember the deleted spider walk scene, don't know if you've seen it? It's where she runs down the stairs upside down and back to front. Should have been kept in the film, because I can no longer look at a staircase in the same way anymore =P

i remember there used to be this rumor long ago... back where i used to live that the actor jason miller was killed in a grizzly accident on a beach somewhere by having a motorbike run over his head crushing it.
the dumb rumors that started when this classic movie first hit the cinema houses.
cujo9 5 months ago 8
@cujo9 Oddly, there's actually some truth to that rumour. It was Jason's son, not Jason himself, who was run over by the motorbike on the beach. He didn't die but he was severely injured and put in intensive care.

and i swear this is the scariest movie ive ever seen..i love scary movies but this one ALWAYS made it hard for me to sleep at night lolz
JIMBOLOSKII 5 months ago
Scariest movie of all time. Period. I laugh at movies like "The Ring" and "The Grudge" and "Saw" and all that other stupid crap.
AllUrUtubeRbelong2me 5 months ago
@AllUrUtubeRbelong2me I will agree with you that The Exorcist is (hands down) the scariest movie ever. The Ring was pretty scary to me, but I will say that all Horror movies now-a-days cannot even come close to what the Exorcist did.
gregpicadash 5 months ago
@gregpicadash Scary movies now a days, to you maybe, arent as scary as the Exorcist, to you. But think about the kids who grow up in this generation, the movies we have these days deff scare the living hell out of us, not gonna lie, The Ring was deff my Exorcist, that shit scarred me for life.... lol. I'm guessing you're a lot older than me if the Exorcist scared you, it made me laugh, only because the affects those days were.. not what we have today lol
chestneychiller1 5 months ago
@chestneychiller1 Don't tell me that special effect or awsome today... today they look like cartoons or video games. But, if you are young enough, may be it is a question of habit.
WALTKRIEG 5 months ago 2
@WALTKRIEG I dont see how you think that, the exorcist and any other movie back then didnt have the technology it does today, thats why I drool of boredom when I watch old horror films, they dont scare me. Todays films scare the shit out of me. Even my mom agreees todays stuff is better, but the exorcist scared her too when she was younger.
chestneychiller1 5 months ago
@chestneychiller1 its got nothing to do with the fx. the writing, acting, direction and imagination was far superior back in the day. nowadays its all cgi or as i call it, cartoons.
loveallthepeople1000 5 months ago
@loveallthepeople1000 Cartoons are drawn. CGI is computer generated images, two different things. But i see what you mean as far as story lines for todays films go, nothing is ever original, and if it is, it sucksss.
chestneychiller1 5 months ago
@chestneychiller1 : I partially agree that age plays a part in “taste”, but thankfully I find that it is not always the case. Many age groups have told me that The Exorcist played on the physiological and psychological senses, causing a horrific impact because it felt real or it could actually happen. Ultimately, I’m sure you would agree that regardless of age, it's a matter of taste. "The Ring" was very scary! I couldnt look at the TV for a week. I thought that girl would come out of it! LOL
gregpicadash 4 months ago
@gregpicadash Agreed. lol. The Ring to me, affected me the same way the Exorcist did my mom, Samara is like Reagan to me, scary. And if she was ever near me I swear I'd shit lol.
chestneychiller1 4 months ago
@AllUrUtubeRbelong2me The Ring was good.. story line was dumb I agreee with that, theres no such thing as a killer video tape lol. But that shit was mad scary, Samara scarred me for life and I didnt watch tv for a long ass time, but you are right about some movies these days, they're stupid as fuck cause no one can come up wth a good idea anymore...

6 .... 6 ..... 6
