Actually you manage to give a convinicing performance even though the tempo was a bit unsteady at times. A very awkward piece to play really. I hate all that three part pedalling on the last page of this Finale movement. The Pipe Organ sounds pretty good although in need of some attention to the action very noisy at times and a distraction to the music. And wow that's one hell of a Contra Bombarde 32 u have there well done.
Reasonably enjoyable - my colleague played this after evensong at Salisbury Cathedral last term which is considered to be a splendid English cathedral instrument
In the same boat as you buddy! The church I just got hired at has a Johannus Rembrandt 397...it's fairly large, but still a toaster with reeds that leave a bit to be desired. I should be planning for a 70+ ranks pipe organ next summer though.
Old South Church, Boston!! This organ is a combination of two Skinner organs, blended together and wrecked by Casavant in the 80's. Fred Mcarthur was the organist then, and he was very disappointed. Plus, the organ's about three times the size the church needs. Four 32' flues and two reeds. Sheesh. (And as for the playing- lots of notes but not much music. Slow down a little and keep it steady, and try a little less gooey legato- put some life in it.)
The more performances on American organs I've listened to the more I get the impression that there's only one basic principle: to have enormous numbers of claviatures and stops. Anyhow the sound of these organs will always be horrible.
Very nice sounding Skinner Organ, however it seems as though the voicing has been a bit "updated" and the organ rebuilt some time around the late 1950's - early 1960's. The tonal scheme seems changed, more so relating to the mixtures. The reeds seem characteristic of Skinner, but again some updated. Can anyone confirm this and by which builder?
Too many tempo fluctuations for me. It shouldn't get faster in an easier section. When I play this piece, I try not to let the manual and piston changes get in the way of making good music.
Great execution and fluidity. You use the "Skinner" colors very well. This is such a great piece and that reed is killer. I can see why it is one of your favs. Keep it up!!!
I'd also love to see/hear a post of you playing my memory (ALL the BEST PEOPLE play by MEMORY, you know...!)
When I was a debutante, we were made to finger EVERY NOTE of the manuscripts we played. It's nice to see your fingerings in the passages of the score...

WOW i want that 32' bombarde under my bed to wake me up in a morning ! :p

Cool, I think you purposely held the pedal a split second or two longer so us listeners can hear the 'death rattle' of the 32' Bombarde, right?

I really like that sound at 3:51.
Great job.

Just make sure you keep to the same tempo and watch some of those pedal notes. It's a tricky piece, but amazingly fun to play.

very well done, keep your wrists straight and stick with the tempo.

Nonetheless, a good effort.
