i love this peace of music and i once saw Holly H and she said her mother made her take piano lessons for which she is now grateful beautiful job HOLLY .
if you love this, you MUST watch the video of "Let There Be Light "!!... it's a song by rock noir band BELLADONNA and MICHAEL NYMAN and it's based on this music from "The Piano". Michael Nyman himself plays piano on it... search for "belladonna nyman" here on youtube and you'll find it!! :-)
Not the most beautiful piece of the movie - but still one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed!
A lot of "piano experts" run Holly Hunter's play down: "too fast, cack-handet, no talent." -- Whew!
I am a pianist, playing since 20 years - and I assert: She deserves esteem! Ms Hunter had only a few weeks to study these pieces, particularly she isn't a professional pianist. But hats off, she aces it!
(By the way: Look at her face, her eyes in this scene! I love her expression at 1:02.)
@RoLorenz Wow, OK. Hadn't realised the reaction to her had been so unkind. In truth her character is not supposed to be the most perfectly tutored or professional player, possibly just the most passionate. She does that quite well, I think.
I had totally forgotten how fast she plays it in the film. I love the track on the CD, with the slow beginning and the increasing tempo but here is it haunting from the very first note and as it has been said before it really tells Ada's mood and feelings I think. I love this track!
i dont know what everyone's smoking but i love it played at this speed. there is a beautiful fluidity to it when it's played a bit faster, not to mention that the last thing ada is trying to do at the moment is to be sensual. the moment right before this, ada's daughter comes in, unaware of the sexual "transaction" taking place and ada has to tell her to go back outside. ada has to start the song again here. there's clear tension, and the speed reflects that. so everyone shut up. thank you
it's not necessarily a matter of ability and frustration :) it's rather a matter of tastes. Personally i appreciate both versions, but the point is that in this scene she is in such an altered psychological and emotional state that she wouldn't be able to play slowly...the slow version would have made no sense in this scene, but of course it's just my opinion
@BBoyJako I would agree with Crellboy and add that piano is emotion. And if people like some piece to be played slow when they weren't designed to, they must not say "its too fast", because with speed, things and emotions appear and disappear depending the speed you play the piano. To me, slow piano is not artistic, yes piano is a fantastic music instrument so one note can be appreciated by itself, but that's not the way we must enjoy piano pieces, in my opinion.
@tomdopdakar you still didnt answered to my question...
and I think that in this case, the routine has to be little faster, for the emotions to be more clearly visible, while playing some Piano songs slow,it loses some of it's weight, and offends the composer also.
@BBoyJako And I won't answer cause i'm unsure of what it means.
Many composer like various interpretations of their work, and I think that slow play ADDS weight to a song, since every single note is better analyzed and resonate in the head better. For some songs slow play is nice, for some others not.
You can't say that. She had the composer teaching her, the film director tewlling her how she shoudl play it and this the final cut - she must be playing exactly as intended. You should say, "she's playing it way to fast for me". Don't criticise her when she'd doing her job exactly as asked.
the way holly hunter plays this song is JUST PERFECT. the speed, the emotion, everything is beautiful. i think this movie is one of the most underrated pieces of art, jane campion is a genius!
BTW - does anyone know if Michael Nyman's own soundtrack version is on YouTube somewhere. I get lots of people doing their versions but I can't find the man himself?
It's nice in the movie but I think the tempo is merely speeded up to fit the timeframe of the movie itself - i.e. time and movie length is money!
But I personally prefer Nyman's own version. He wrote it and knows what tempo suits it best. You catch so much of the intricate melancholic beauty of the piece when it's slowed down - well I do.
Yes the original piece is slower but in this scene she plays it so fast because it reflects her feelings at the moment which are stress, possible anger and passion. As a person who does not speak all of her feeling are shown in the way she plays
You´re right...How can exist things so perfect and beautiful, how can people create things like this, when this world is turning fooler and madder now?! It´s like they were two diferent realities...It just don´t seem the same world.
Yeah, but she is nervous, troubled, whatever, you can see it on her face... And the music expresses it. I think its fine in the movie, in this scene. I play it slower at home... :)
i think this song sound good in Michael Nyman´s version, but in this scene i prefer it like this, in this fast it sounds more...passionately, like if she want to play it very hard and eager, and she can´t wait more for listening the notes.
Is Holly Hunter who plays the piano each time her character is supossed to be playing??? I didn't know this! Another fact to consider this is an awesome performance of an extremely difficult character.
i didn´t know holly was actually playing it!! thats very nice, acting and playing at same time...anyway i like rather the version slower than this althought Holy plays with truly feeling...and the piano from the movie is really neat, do u think i could buy it on ebay loooool
Yes! IS incredible how she plays the piano while she performs this scene, isn't it? I think she feels it. And I love the personal touch She gives to this song, even more the original.
Holly Hunter already knew how to play the piano before she won the role. She started playing the piano at age nine; in fact, music was her first love before getting involved in acting.
That´s true. But She had to practise a lot for the role. In the documentary of the movie she explains she had forgotten her technique a bit, and really wondered if she would be able to play those brilliant pieces.
Even Jane Campion considered for the role other actress first, I don´t imagine The piano without Holly Hunter.

BORING PEOPLE who always say TOO FAST.
The fact that YOU cannot play it that fast doesnt that it must not be played that fast.
If you suck at piano don't encourage people to suck too.
Work, work, work. No secret.
