This is the kind of shit we get ALL THE TIME in the Midwest (northern Illinois) area. I miss them! Of course, our infrastructure is a lot better set up to handle these types of storms. This makes me miss sunner. I laughed when I saw the rich bastard's Mercedes coupe flooded with water. LOL. Serves that bastard right.
@adamnjoke You guys get some pretty cool windstorms during the winter. I have video of a few weak ones on my acount, but have yet to see something like the Hannukah Eve windstorm in 2006.
wow great video im in melbourne florida we get like 2 or three of these over the summer months which generally means a year so theyre pretty rare though we do get some nasty storms every afternoon during the summer.the large hail is rare though its generally smaller here with a few exceptions my question for you is about the winter.during the winter here in central fl we sometimes see tornadoes or severe storms coming with frontal systems especally during la nin~a do they make it that far south?
The short answer is - kinda. We get thunderstorms, but not as frequently and not as severe as the ones you guys get up in central Florida.
During my two year stay in Miami I saw one severe thunderstorm in February, one in April, two in June and one in August. I'd say the peak month for severe thunderstorms in Miami, if they happen at all, would be May and June.
The above storm is the worst I saw and the only one with hail/sustained winds over 55mph.
We get storms in Arizona like this every summer afternoon because of our monsoon season. We had a storm in 2008 with the strengh of a cat. 3 hurricane. Caused a lot of destruction in Phoenix, especaily downtown and along the waterfront. Winds were at 115 mph when windows were blowing out, rooves were being shredded, and when the Bubble dome in Tempe was completly torn to pieces. So much rain, and lightning(300,000 flashes every hour and 1500 every 5 minutes) Do you get storms like that in Miami?
Well, a thunderstorm with winds the strength of a cat 3 hurricane (sustained over 115mph) would be incredibly rare even in the stormiest places in the world like central Oklahoma. This one in Miami probably, at it's worst, had sustained winds around 60mph with gusts to 80. and it was definitely unusual.
Oh okay. Our storm was one our worst we've seen since the 80s'. But the radar thing showed excessive wind speeds of 85 mph and 100+ in Tempe, and 115+ in the heart of downtown. This storm formed in less than an hour on that humid August 28th. But I thought Miami had worse storms than this.
We get hurricanes more than any other US city, and we get dozens of thunderstorms every year. Sometimes they have high winds in the 40mph range, but over 60mph is rare.
um if remember correctly Miami get's at least one storm of this intensity(very severe) every year some year's up to 3 and at least a dozen severe storms am i right i live in the area
The mayor of South Beach said it was the worst storm he had seen in his 20+ years living on the beach. Miami gets strong storms, but ones with large hail and wind gusts over 70mph are rare.
You might as well called this storm a hurricane and put a name on it! Fantastic video. Love the lightning strikes at :28 and 1:09. Only once in my life do I remember having a storm like this; we had a storm in my area of NJ around 10 years ago that had 80-90mph wind gusts, but it lasted only about 20 minutes. That storm did drop a big tree on the house which put a damper on the day.
thank u...now im home sick.......lived in miami from 2002 till 2007...we had the best storm...worked in miss saigon resteraunt in pinecrest and coral gables..check it out.....the storms were the best.....hurricanes the best too..miss it a lot,..fantastic vid.......lookin forward to ur next miami storm vid...now back in england.........cheers...
hey i remember that day.yea that was a bad one i was on colins that day so i stuck in the thick of it also....man i should have grab my cam too.nice vid
philipines is a little like this only the wind is so strong it can blow the roof off a house. and it can rip a tree the width of a round table. and when i went there there was a tornado. my poor uncle had to tie the roof because it was blowing off.
No it isn't, it was a highly rare occurance. Yes, it rains hard in the summertime, but not like that and without such strong winds. It does not flood like that everyday, especially on Miami Beach where this was shot. I live there,so I know
im just joking sure i know that this flooding is rare, but your wrong about the winds, during the storms there are winds and wind gusts like that, and i would know cuz i live there too probably longer than you have so dont be hatin
Winds of this strength are not typical at all in Miami in thunderstorms. Yeah, hurricanes and tropical storms strike and cause winds of this intensity or stronger, but having a severe thunderstorm with wind gusts of 70-80mph in SoBe is quite unusual.
Its funny because I live about 15 miles west of Miami Beach, in the Westchester neighborhood of Miami, and we barely had a drop of rain the day this happened. And I am a survivor of Hurricanes Andrew, Katrina (yes it hit here 1st) and Wilma, and trust me, as bad as this was, it was nothing as bad as a real hurricane. But this was VERY unusual for South Fla. Yes we can have bad thunderstorms but this was extreme for us.
hey listen, douchebag, ive lived longer than you in miami and i would know so leave me alooooooooone....im not gonna use any damn bad words so leave me alooooone....ALONE!
This is a major sign that Global Warming are causing storms to explode and become more violent. Florida will soon be under water. I give it another 10 years before the city goes under water!!! Great video. I wonder what a cat 1 hurricane will do to Miami if this was just a passing storm!
wow great footage! thats why i love Florida, disaster capital of the country.....wildfires, tornados, hurricanes, lightning, sinkholes, severe thunderstorms....its has it all for weather enthusiasts
cant believe i missed that storm. i was in orlando at that time. they had severe storms there to, even a tornado warning, but i never got to the most extreme part of the storm :(
Thanks so much for posting this video. My daughter had told me about it (she lives on southbeach and had to walk across the causeway to get home when the buses stopped running to the beach), but it's really something to actually see it. Thanks again.

man i hate that, being stuck at a store because of rain, when that happened to me i just ran through the rain, i was soked and my pants almost fell while i was runnin, but yea great quality vid!
I saw the black clouds just to the south of us in Ft Lauderdale and watched it on the radar late yesterday. We had the same violent weather too last week, but it didn't last for two hours.
There is talk by the news stations that this storm actually pushed raw sewage into the streets of Miami Beach and that there is now a health advisory because of it.
